Help Save Norman Thomas, Maxwell, Jamaica & all Schools that could be Closed

Jamaica High School received some good press this weekend with a fantastic feature on our school and one of our former athletes from George Vecsey in the NY Times. If you really want to help support schools that DOE is trying to close, come to the rally Thursday afternoon to save Norman Thomas and Wednesday, at 5:30 p.m. to save Jamaica. There is also a PEP meeting Thursday in the Bronx. We should lend a hand to any other actions supporting members in the 22 schools that could be closed.

Go to the PEP web page for information on how to comment on the proposals. For Jamaica, Norman Thomas and Maxwell, it's Samuel SlovesHS.Proposals@schools.nyc.gov 718-935-4414

Here is the complete list from the DOE web page. We hope people go to as many rallies as they are able to.
People power only works if there are a whole lot of people out there.

Hurts when it his home, doesn't it? Let the DOE close Jamaica, it's really no more than an elementary school

I guess Beach Channel doesn't count?

It's funny how this blog only mentions schools that ICE people attend.

"& all Schools that could be Closed", that was either done intentionally or ICE can't be bothered to learn the other schools.

In another thread James insists that "ICE has supported schools such as Lafayette and Tilden as they have attempted to stay alive. I am in contact with Lane people often and we of course support them."

James - exactly WHO are you in contact with at Lane? It's not the chapter leader or any delegates. I've asked almost everyone in Lane and people only know your name from this blog. Can you say who it is that you communicate with? Or, is it just bull....? Then again, maybe it's just the two or three that I missed.

The state has posted school report card data. I made a comparison of small schools with large schools. Jamaica and some other large schools perform just as well as the small schools that the city favors. My latest blog post combines some highlights of Leonie Haimson et al's book NYC Schools Under Bloomberg / Klein and analysis of the schools using New York State's own data:
