GRATEFUL FOR TOMORROW OFF BUT HOPEFULLY THAT'S IT FOR SNOW DAYS

My reading of the Department of Education Calendar for this school year says we won't have any room for further snow days after tomorrow to meet the State minimum of 180 aidable school days.

Let it snow all night but clean it up by Wednesday. Otherwise, we are in a Sandy type situation where we will have to start extending the calendar somewhere else to make up for any further snow days.

This is from the DOE Calendar for 206-17.

16. As a result of Chancellor Conference Days, shortened sessions for various purposes, and Regents Days, the total number of instructional days (days when students report to school) may be different from the number of state aidable days.

17. For Grades 1 through 6, there are 182 aidable days (178 instructional days).

18. For Grades 7 and 8 Citywide and Grade 9 in Middle Schools (including District 75), there are 182 aidable days (178 instructional days).

19. For High School Level Grades 9 through 12, there are 182 aidable days in all boroughs, 165 of which are instructional (in District 75, there are 182 aidable days, 178 of which are instructional days).

Last time I looked 182 - 2 = 180 so that's it for snow days this year.

Principal at our school said that she is most concerned about Wednesday. Feeling is that schools WILL be open but many staff members will not be able to make it in. In other words, Count on schools being opened on Wednesday and it is gonna be a shit show.

Would you rather lose a sick day cor Wednesday or a day from vacation?

Police say around 10:45 a.m. the suspect posed as a customer and placed an order for food delivery to 1281 St. Marks Ave. in Crown Heights.

When the 20-year-old victim arrived at the location, police say he was instructed to take the food down the block to 1248 St. Marks Ave., where he gave the bag of food to the suspect and asked for payment.

The victim was then punched in the face numerous times before the suspect took $50 from his pants pocket.

After the victim managed to break free, the suspect fled westbound on St. Marks Avenue with the food and money.

Police describe the suspect as black, between the ages of 18 to 20-years-old, approximately 5’9″ tall, and between 150 to 160 pounds. He was last seen wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

The one trick pony strikes again. The topic is snow.

Anonymous said...

The one trick pony is the fact that the same people, such a small percent of the population, get arrested over and over, and also happen to make up the majority of a heavily failing school system. I wonder why the schools are all failing. And it is the topic. How many people on here complain about being abused? All the time. I read the daily news, the post, check the websites, its one black crime after another.

Anonymous said...

Posting on snow. Comment on black crime. Totally off topic.

Anonymous said...

Maybe so, but poster is right. The stats are ridiculously clear.

I read that we only had one snow day built into this year's calendar because of the addition of the Muslim holiday in June. I read that in September, but I can't find any info on it.

Chaz said...

The one snow day came from Mikey Mulgrew. I always knew we had two. Remember, they can make Brooklyn-Queens day an instructional day, if necessary.

Anonymous said...

Back to topic: NYC is going to be a giant sheet on ice on Tuesday. Schools are open. Kids will be at school. Teachers that can take the subway will make it to work. Teachers who drive? Well, that is the million dollar question. Me says that there will be A LOT of teachers absent tomorrow but that is the way it goes.

James Eterno said...

Read the post. We have 2 snow days this year. I thought I sourced it well. Chaz, I think BQ day is already an aidable day.

I'm taking off tomorrow. I'm not risking my life. Sick day or vacation day, there's no learning go on to tomorrow.

Anonymous said...

Probably right

Highly Effective King Clovis said...

I'm sure I will have to cover someone's schedule tomorrow. Haha.

Anonymous said...

So take the day off Clovis. Last Wednesday was a 'Day Without Women' , let's make it a 'Day Without Babysitters', I mean teachers.

Anonymous said...

I hate covering for teachers who won't come in on days like this. Part of this job is to be as responsible as possible. If you live within walking distance to a train station there is reason whatsoever to be absent today. (Unless you have a medical condition that prevents you from walking in the cold and ice) And trust me, there are a TON of teachers who live very close to my school who take days like today off.

Better for all of us so many stay home. Allows for true cleanup to take place.

Back to normal I guess. I wonder why black schools fail.
A man offered to do a good deed at a Brooklyn restaurant — and was punished with a bone-breaking beating, cops said.

A group of men kicked and pummeled a 37-year-old customer, beating him with his own cane after he offered pay for their meal, police said Tuesday.

Then, as he lay prone and bleeding on the ground, two customers simply ordered dinner as if nothing had happened, police sources said.

“Can I get No. 12?” one woman asked a cashier, with the victim curled up on the floor behind her, sources said.
Cops on Tuesday released video showing part of the brutal beatdown, which happened around 7:30 p.m. on March 1 at Texas Chicken & Burgers on Ocean Ave. at Church Ave. in Prospect Park South.
The victim was sitting in booth near the cashier’s counter as customers lined up. Two men came in, and one said loudly that no one would give him a dollar, sources said.

The victim offered to help, and the man went ballistic, first telling him, “I’ve got money, I’ve got money,” and then to “Mind your f---ing business!”

The men closed in on him, punching him and grabbing his nearby cane to hit him with it, sources said.

The victim swung the cane back at his attackers, as two more men rushed inside and piled on, punching and kicking him in the head and body.
The group finally left, but not before dragging the victim toward the front door. Before police arrived, another man walked in and went through the victim’s pockets, appearing to help himself to property.

Customers kept coming in and stepping over the man until police showed up and aided the twitching victim, cop sources said.

Medics took the man to an area hospital for broken bones, including his nose, and cuts and bruises, police said. The man is in stable condition

These articles are right on the money, what a bunch of fucking lowlifes.

Anonymous said...

Off topic again. Who is the lowlife? Someone who makes their living hating their students? Maybe

Anonymous said...

Don't waste your time. We all know the people who commit the most crime, welfare, drug abuse, out of wedlock births, failing in school. etc... It doesn't matter anymore.

Anonymous said...

Shitload of teachers were absent today at my school. TONS of them take the subway or train and still did not come it. Bunch of wussies. Teachers who did come in had to do coverages.

Anonymous said...

A couple of people late. That was it.

The racists all apparently made it in today.

They are not racists...they are decent folks who believe certain folks in certain groups commit all of the crime, thrive on welfare, etc in the world. No don't call them racist, they are simply stating facts--albeit alternative. I sometimes run into them in schools and when I am finished talking with them...you can see the veins popping in their neck. The truth not alternate facts tend to make some people seethe. So when I read the stuff on these blogs I chuckle to myself. It's only cowards with big ahem hands behind the keyboard. It's hilarious yet dangerous.

Seems like it is always the same few teachers who are always absent at my school. They rack up tons of absences. They must not have any days in their CAR. Roll call: How many days do you guys have in your CAR?

Please read carefully my clever friend. Most not all. God Bless

And anonymous racists too. Put your name to comments and I will put mine on my comment.

I have very few. Been sick. Does that make me a bad teacher?

175 days. ..yahoo

Having very few CAR days does not make anybody a bad teacher. However, having a good balance in your CAR is a wise move in case of a serious accident or health situation. I see so many teachers who just take days off for the hell of it and it can come back to bit you in the ass in the event that something horrible happens. I would never endorse coming to school when sick, but folks should think twice before taking a day off for just a sniffle. (Let the bashing commence!)

Anonymous said...

I have well over a hundred days in my CAR. I would only consider donating days to a truly sick or injured friend. In this day and age of social media, I see plenty of teachers who are "absent" but are really on trips or doing bullshit at home instead of being at work. These are the kinds of people that are fueling the fire to get rid of banking our sick days or reducing our number to less than 10 sick days per year.

163 days

Lol....ah nahhhhh
It appears that the kind of sickness they have takes years and/or generations to cure...

Negative 20. I must suck according to some people here. Did I mention I have 3 kids and no childcare help?

Anonymous said...

After 10 years I have 50 at this point. I have been guilty of taking the "mental health day" on occasion but for the most part I try to come to school. This year I have taken 1 day so far.

Anonymous said...

Negative 20. You have kids. It was a choice to have kids. You will need to take days. However, don't complain that you have negative 20 days. If you did not have kids, then maybe you would not have negative 20 days. (And we don't think you suck by the way) Having kids results in needing more days away from work. That goes with the territory.

James Eterno said...

6:56 stated, "Negative 20. You have kids. It was a choice to have kids. You will need to take days. However, don't complain that you have negative 20 days. If you did not have kids, then maybe you would not have negative 20 days."

Negative 20, Complain all you want. We should have had paid childcare leaves years ago. The Board's lack of paid childcare leave goes against what employees in other Western countries have.

Anonymous said...

Everyone who has been working for the DOE for a while took on the job knowing that we do not have paid leave. If a person chooses to have kids knowing there is no paid child care leave, they really don't have much ground to stand on to complain about having a negative CAR balance. I choose to never have kids and one of those reasons is that I do not ever want to be in a financial situation with few options.

waitingforsupport said...

Alrighty then...choices choices choices
We must live with our choices like a marriage--for better or worse or divorce and then set out to make different choices. However we will find ourselves back at square one---choices choices choices.

James Eterno said...

You should not have to choose between career and family. The Western world is moving beyond that. US is an exception. There is nothing much that is progressive about our particular employer, the DOE.

Anonymous said...

Family and career and 2 different things. Everybody has a "right" to have a family and have as many kids as they want. However, that does not mean that a potential employer has to pay for paid leave. What if a person loves prostitutes? Should that person get paid leave to go visit legal brothels in Nevada? If we are truly living in a new era with LGBT, polyamorous people, swingers, etc, then anybody should be able to take time off to their hearts content. What about people who are in love with booze? Should they get paid leave for when they are hungover? As the poster mentioned above, having a family, (Any kid of family) is a choice. Having a family is not something to be taken lightly and folks must understand the financial hardships that can come with this choice. I have no problem with a company or municipality deciding to go with paid maternity leave but I do not think it is a given right as so many others say.

James Eterno said...

I am talking about Western European model where there is paid family leave when baby is born. It makes sense. USA is behind the curve on this. Having a family should not jeopardize a career.

Anonymous said...

It is actually the other way around: Having a career can jeopardize a family. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs states that physiological needs come first-food, drink, shelter, warmth. Second set of needs is safety needs:-security, order, stability, and freedom from fear. Both of the first 2 needs can only be provided for by a stable job. The 3rd need according to Maslow are love and belonging needs which includes family. The point is that a career is the most important element to be able to live a comfortable life. A family is something that can only come after basic needs are met. If a person wants a family, they must be able to provide for themselves as well as the family. If a certain job or career can't provide for a family with paid leave, then it should not be chosen or that person should not choose to have a family for the time being until they can. As for the European model of cradle to grave paid family leave, that is going to be a hard sell in the US since somebody ends up paying for everything there. I am not a Trump person at all, just mentioning that the problem is a lot deeper than just saying the state can or should pay for everything. In the meantime, folks who are contemplating having babies with or without a family need to take a very close look to see if it is something they can handle. I know plenty of people, including teachers who are single moms who are struggling due to the choices that they made. Anyway, enjoy the weekend!

Anonymous said...

Actually our students have tons of kids. They dont have to worry about sick days because they are forever on the dole.

James Eterno said...

"As for the European model of cradle to grave paid family leave, that is going to be a hard sell in the US since somebody ends up paying for everything there."

Please read NYC Educator today. Bernie Sanders by far is the most popular politician in America. Cradle to grave is the way forward. People can still make profits but the vast wealth of this country needs to be distributed a little more fairly.

Anonymous said...

Tons of kids!? Your students have tons of kids?

Anonymous said...

"The vast wealth of this country needs to be distributed more fairly". What does this mean? If we were all stuck in the woods due to a nuclear winter and I went out and shot and killed a deer to feed my family does this mean that my family only get one bite since I must "distribute" the rest of the deer to other people that are not my family?

Anonymous said...

Tons of kids as in, ive had students with as many as 4 kids at 18 years old. Yeah, i think thats tons. Ive been in schools where just about every girl had kids or was currently pregnant. Do you think they agonize every night wondering where the baby daddies are, or where they are gonna find a meal, or balancing work and mothering? No, they dont give a shit, and they have all of our tax dollars to support their ways. Thats why there is no sense of self responsibility. Its a sad state of affairs in this country. By the way, that HS girl that had 4 kids at 18 years old, that was with 3 different guys.

Anonymous said...

Why wouldn't bernie be popular. Giving the masses free stuff is always popular. 1 more thing, working in Brooklyn and far rock have seen too many to mention kids with tons of babies and many many 40 yr old mothers with 7 kids from 6 different men. Have also seen many of these mothers have a 25yr old and a new born. They are overworked and constantly angry over what has happened to them. And many of the kids from these situations turn out the same way. So let's give them more free stuff. I would rather see my hard earned tax dollar going to parenting classes. But I would be called a racists so let's just forget about it. God Bless

Anonymous said...

And how about when they get their income tax refund that they brag about being thousands of dollars, because of having several babies they cant pay for and cant take care of. Refund on taxes they didnt pay in the first place. Thats called instant welfare and cradle to grave dependency. And then when they get the thousands, all to material goods...

James Eterno said...

So what's your solution?

Anonymous said...

Stop the handouts. They cant at least put on a condom? And you dont notice the cycle is never ending?

James Eterno said...

We limited welfare to two years in 1996. People found ways around it. They give the handouts in other advanced countries too and they survive. If we throw everyone off of the dole as you suggest, I don't see everyone suddenly becoming responsible. Social unrest is more likely. Is that what you are proposing?

Jr said...

You mean social unrest like Ferguson and Baltimore? So those who choose not to work can demand a free ride from those who work forever? And then will destroy cars and buildings if they dont get what they dont deserve in the first place? I would lessen it, and make them do some type of community work to EARN it. Or, force place them in jobs that are available.

James Eterno said...

Are you proposing actual government jobs for the unemployed? A modern day WPA? That's radical socialism or maybe just a Neo-New Deal. The taxpayers will still have to pay for it.

We have Neo-Cons and Neo-Liberals. Has anyone yet coined the term Neo-New Deal?

Anonymous said...

There are job vacancies and people have decided that its easier to stay at home and do nothing. They should be force placed into these jobs, if they decline, they get nothing.

Anonymous said...

I think forced placement is a form of involuntary servitude. I believe that is outlawed by the 13th amendment. That would hit the courts in about five seconds and two minutes later there would be an injunction.

Anonymous said...

Ok, then no money if you cant find a job. We keep going in circles. If you arent willing to work in an available job...Why should taxpayers keep supporting you. Of course im talking about able bodied males and females.

Anonymous said...

That is why welfare reform failed. Everyone found a way to be disabled. This is much more complicated than you want to admit.

Anonymous said...

17 year olds are able bodied enough to get fucked by a different piece of garbage guy every day, enough to give birth over and over, but then of course can depend on me going to college, BA, MS, wake up at 5 am so she can get top end material goods, while not working. Well, its now under 50 percent paying fed income taxes...

Anonymous said...

Above is right, and then they curse and threaten us they are using and abusing our tax dollars. And you wonder why social security is broke, because these graduationg students dont earn a penny, and thats what we will depend on.

Anonymous said...

Its the fault of white privilege don't you know.
And to james solutions to what? Our students have so many problems that have been mentioned numerous times, where do we start?
Out of wedlock births?
High Welfare Rates?
High Unemployment and under employment ?
High Drug abuse rates?
Little if any marketable skills to support themselves?
Failing schools and fake grades and diplomas?
Very little personal responsibility?
And last but not really the end of our long list of societal problems......

Little if any understand between the difference between needs and wants. I need health care but I want the newest fashion. I need to save money and build wealth but I want another pair of the latest sneakers. I need to build wealth but I want a new tattoo. I need to build good credit but will max my credit cards and pay it late and only the minimum. You all know the truth and its a shame we think giving people more free stuff will solve the many problems facing western civilization. I can go on an on but who the f cares anymore. Free stuff is not the answer. My father always told me you never appreciate and value the things you get for free. You will value, appreciate and take care of the things you work hard for.

James Eterno said...

No more dole won't solve anything. It will just lead to civil unrest. We already have the highest incarceration rate in the world. Jailing them or killing them won't solve anything. The people you condemn already have free healthcare. It is called Medicaid. The people who work the hardest in many cases in my opinion, the working class, often do not or have insufficient healthcare. Providing everyone with Medicare would be a step in the right direction as would a higher minimum wage to make a real incentive to work as opposed to staying on welfare. Those people would then pay payroll taxes.

Whenever a Fox news enthusiast says the majority don't pay income taxes they never talk about Social Security or Medicare taxes which working people pay but only up to around $120,000 of income per year. Over that, nothing. No mention how Bill Gates is done with payroll tax right after the ball drops on January 1.

Reading some comments it is no wonder why the suicide rate rises in England when Tories are in power. That has been documented.

Anonymous said...

And when all these people dont work, they dont contribute...and then its double bad because they still get paid thru tax dollars of others. This is becoming more and more the norm.

James Eterno said...

And when they are in jail, you still pay for them.

Anonymous said...

Prefer that over them making my life a living hell. At least they wont be cursing me and threatening me. I have to pay for people who make bad lifestyle choices.

James Eterno said...

You also might not have a job since we are funded based on how many kids there are. However, the correction officers union will like your view.
