MARCHES FOR EDUCATION JUSTICE THROUGHOUT NYS

Plenty of media and social media coverage of today's Marches for Educational Justice throughout NYS.

NY1 has a story on the New York City March.

Here is a further report from PIX 11:

MANHATTAN — Teachers, students, parents and supporters are marching Saturday for better educational resources in the state of New York in the People’s March for Education Justice.

The group aims to “defend public education from federal attacks by Donald Trump and Betsy DeVos… defend here in New York from Governor Andrew Cuomo,” according to the group’s Facebook page.

They’re marching from Trump International Hotel to Cuomo’s office on Third Avenue. The group’s demands include a use of $4.3 billion owed to the public “statewide” which includes $1.9 billion owed to New York City; to ‘Raise the Age’ and end youth criminalization; to end the state’s reliance on “high stakes testing”; to demand that the state invests in pre-K and childcare; to ensure that all public schools, colleges and universities in the state are sanctuary schools; to demand that SUNY and CUNY schools are truly made free when Cuomo’s proposed free tuition plan takes effect this fall; and to extend and expand the millionaire’s tax, which would potentially bring billions of dollars in funding to schools.

The group’s page says both Cuomo and President Trump have “attacked” public education and “called public schools a ‘monopoly.'”

Anybody know where the official UFT was? Oh yeah, they can't offend Governor Cuomo.

I caught up with the tail end of the Kingston March. It was a spirited group who walked a mile in the very cold weather. It's inspirational to be with others who care and want better for the community.
I can sit at the computer all day and agree or disagree, but it's really wonderful to be out there with positive people making a difference.

Thats the point, they dont make a difference. Remember when Randi made us fill MSG so the mayor would hear us. Look how much worse it is 15 years later. Remember when Mulgrew made us go on twitter and facebook...Yeah, big difference. Remember, #Invitecuomo? Like a bunch of sheep the teachers did all these stupid things, we are the real suckers with out 1 percent raises 15 years later, still waiting for hundreds of millions of dollars of retro. And medical goes up again in July.

At the last meeting when we endorsed de Blasio, without any opinion other than a few, and he magically appeared, look at all the idiots cheering like he's done such great things for us. ie: the worst contract in history, student on teacher abuse, no discipline code, admin abuse, no parking passes, extra observations, crooked, corrupt system, his liberal way of thinking, no suspensions, everybody passes, students are always right...

How is DeVos worse than Coumo, Mulgrew, Farina, Weingarten, Duncan or King? At least she readily admits she knows nothing. I'm sure Mulgrew and Weingarten will be working for her in a few years. The only reason things are much worse under deBlasio than Bloomberg is because of MULGREW - the master negotiator. How about your members pay for health care? Sure, Bill. How about we stop suspensions and make the schools look safe? Sure Bill. How about we spread that raise over many years to help the city? Sure, Bill. How about we make it easier to terminate veteran teachers that are ATRs? Sure Bill. How about you give me absolutely anything I want? Sure Bill.

How about a march against Mulgrew and Unity? I'd march in that one.

For education, so far, this year is not much worse. But now, as a group, we are speaking out. The education policies of this administration are not acceptable, but quite honestly, the ed policies of the losing centrist party, would not have been acceptable either.
In the US, parties in power change. My message, by protesting, is that the next party who wants to win, needs to govern humanely.

I'll March to that

Me too.

But now we are speaking. Yeah, ok. Because now we are gonna get back all we lost, change the garbage raises we got, get students to sit down, be prepared, have a notebook, pen and pencil, and do the do now, never curse, never threaten, fake grades will be gone, we will get the retro paid tomorrow, we will be able to choose where we work, enforce the discipline code, etc...

How about you don't send anyone to support educators during the sham 3020 hearings? Sure, that's a no brainer Billy

You mean Mike, right? Everything that's being done and/or not done to teachers and education is because of UFT agreement, inaction and/or silent acquiesce. Teachers are more pissed off at the UFT than at Trump, DeVos, Cuomo, Farina or Cuomo. At least with Bloomberg, Mulgrew fought backs for two terms. Now he's just an accommodating elitist in an ill fitting suit, but then again 77% voted for the last contract.

And they voted for Mulgrew. Only the high school teachers voted for Jia.

He cares more about illegal immigrants than teachers getting punched, kicked, bitten, and threatened. But we are lucky to have a job and a 1 percent raise.

Mulgrew only cares for Mulgrew, and the cronies he uses for his own gain - power, prestige and money. And he's Weingarten's cronie. A rude awakening is coming to them and unfortunately for all of us.
