DOE BACK TO NORMAL; SCHOOL OPEN FRIDAY

NYC schools will be open Friday. It is extremely cold, snowy and icy. Please be careful getting to and from school.

I was asked in the comments if we had snow days to spare this school year. The answer is we should. NYC teachers are reporting for work 185 days for the 2017-18 school year. 4 conference days are permitted within the state required minimum 180 school days. We should have enough snow days available this year.

Our neighbor to the north, Yonkers, will be closed on Friday. My guess is many other districts will close too. NYC schools are open while surrounding districts are closed or have delayed openings. Now it feels normal. One day of sanity was quite enough, thank you.

My back is aching a bit after shoveling the car out earlier. Thanks to my neighbor for using his snow blower to help me out. I will probably get plowed in again overnight. Regardless, NYC teachers, parents and students will do our best tomorrow. Please be safe. I hope the streets are clear and the buses and trains run on time.

Anyone from the suburbs who drives in Friday is risking their life.

As a union, every teacher should use a sick day.

Show city hall we are not babysitters

Scholars at Success Academy excused for being absent today. Not NYC public schools.

We got one day, what else did you expect?

Two days. I thought deBlasio developed a brain. Now I can sit in half empty classrooms all day. What fun?

929,

Why go in today? Do you not have days in car ?

Got days. Why waste them on a do nothing day? Admin thanked us today.

Catching up on needless paperwork. I teach high school. Most kids who were here have long since gone home.

If I knew I could find Parking I would have gone in.

My concerns on days like today are car accidents.

I skidded on black ice 12 years ago and crashed my car.

I know one small school had 100% staff attendance. They have a parking lot, and an administration that reached out to the staff and told them that everyone would understand anyone that stayed home. The staff has in the past been treated with professionalism and respect. And today was no different. They were shown gratitude and had it made known that their efforts were appreciated.

Now, as far as the size of the staff is concerned, I realize it’s not fair to compare that school to a large school, but you can compare how people are treated. Another school I know of, (which also does NOT have a parking lot) has a history of treating people like garbage and with disrespect, did not do any of these things today to make sure the staff knew their efforts were or would be appreciated had estimated 75% absenteeism. And plenty of people who gave zero thought to going in. A building in which in the past, albeit now the distant past, everyone would have found a way to get in.

I heard about a school that actually gives positive letters to file for teachers who come in on snowy days. THAT to me is a serious sign of respect in an otherwise hostile teaching world.

If you take anything the administration says seriously be it positive or negative then you don’t deserve any respect. Professionalism is self-directed the way preps used to be b

753,

That is pitting teachers who showed up on snow days vs teachers who did not come in.

All part of union busting.

APs used to give letters thanking teachers who showed up on Saturdays when they did not have to.

Be careful. Admins are assassina

In some schools, administrators are decent and supportive. However, I do understand the automatic negative response. It comes from experience.
