MULGREW OPTIMISTIC EMAIL ON NEW CHANCELLOR

In my inbox this evening:

Dear James,
Richard Carranza, the Houston schools superintendent, has been named the next New York City schools chancellor.
We are happy that Mayor de Blasio has chosen another career educator to succeed Carmen Fariña. Carranza, the child of Mexican immigrant parents, began as a bilingual social studies teacher in Arizona and worked his way up through the ranks to lead the San Francisco public schools for four years before his 18-month stint in Houston.
Carranza has earned a reputation for collaboration with educators and parents and has been a real champion of public schools. We are encouraged by his commitment to all children, his resistance to a “testing culture” and his support for the community schools approach.
In his remarks today at the City Hall press conference to announce his appointment, Carranza spoke about how he draws his inspiration and strength from the classroom. He stressed the importance of social and emotional learning and the arts in urban public schools. And he spoke persuasively about the support that “historically underserved” schools need to turn around.
In answering a question about charter schools, he made clear his own allegiance: “I am a vocal, voracious, absolutely passionate supporter of public schools.”
Both his track record and his words today are promising. We look forward to working with the new schools chancellor to continue to move our New York City public schools forward.
Thank you for everything that you do.

Sincerely,
Michael Mulgrew,
UFT President

What better way to show he is fair, with the liberal mayor we supported, then to give us a new, fair, better contract?

Snow day Wednesday?

At least he is not tainted by The Bloomberg anti-union, anti - teacher insanity.

I’m telling you, I think Cuomo called Carvalho and told him to hold on until he gets rid of Mayoral Control, and then he’ll give him free reign. Cuomo and de Blasio are in a race to screw us now that Janus is coming.

I wonder what mulgrew got as a kickback to support this guy?

Probably 2,500 directly to him. All crisp hundreds

I want a 50% raise. de Blasio bumped the. Chancellor Salary to 353,000!!! That’s over 5 times what a teacher makes. How about a raise for us? Imagine a 50% raise, pushing the median salary to 93,000. That’s almost enough to get by, here. That would actually address inequality. But, we’re women, so, de Blsio won’t pay us (look how underpaid Fariña was). 50% raise for educators? I say, #MeToo, Boss.

I came to NYC after teaching in Connecticut. I took a pay CUT not a pay raise. I love how teachers are treated so much differently than fat cats at the DOE.

Are there no qualified candidates in New York?

Qualified? Have you been to Tweed?! Seriously, no, there aren’t.

Abigail share comes out with some witty stuff and the notion that she posted proves that some people just love negativity and that is all they know and then they put it in two or three words.

I suppose my response was negative. But, after years of Superintendents asking me for minutes from my common planning meetings and binders of student data, isn’t fair to start asking questions about the competence of the Tweedies?

This appt. will continue to destroy our schools. We have discipline decline throughout the city. Students in schools that were once orderly, now run the place and openly tell teachers and admin., there is little they can do to stop them. Socila justice or equity as some calls it means no one achieves.

You know what I am not optimistic about? OUR MAYOR! He just said NYC schools are going to be open tomorrow. Farina is still in office after all. It is going to be a beautiful day.

There was an article in the NYT today about the new chancellor. The comments were very telling- Houston is NOT exactly lamenting his departure.

Houston is only bitching because there were financial problems there. It was not his fault. Texas is has tons of problems with that. I am not sweating that about him. However, I am concerned that the Mayor will NOT allow the new chancellor to pick his own staff which includes the head of human resources. I really hope this is not going to be Farina PT 2. The DOE needs a big enema and I don't think the new chancellor will be able to flush it.
