ICEUFT WILL NOT TELL ANYONE WHAT ORGANIZATIONS THEY CAN BELONG TO

At yesterday's ICEUFT meeting, a proposal was passed without much discussion (rare for ICEUFT) stating that ICEUFT takes a position that people who are part of ICEUFT are free to join and/or stay in any other organization of their choice.

To belong to the Independent Community of Educators (ICEUFT), one needs to be an advocate for UFT members and for the public schools. That is the litmus test.

As for a specific group, even as ICEUFT has suspended our support for the Movement of Rank and File Educators, we have no issue with any individual who wants to stay in both organizations.

Yesterday was "Restorative Saturday"

What does this have to do with ICE saying their people can stay in MORE? Nothing. Same jackass just looking to make trouble. We can all vote Republican and lock the homeless up.

Jeff said...

Its union leadership talk. The spring conference was yesterday. Our dues pay the leadership. Dues may not be paid in the fall. The union influences who we vote for. Uft has always endorsed dems. Look at the state of the uft after 8 years of obama, de blasio. Look at the dem states in the country.

Some believe that restorative justice is a joke, leading to further discipline issues. Leadership should be changing this.

Anonymous said...

MORE/ICE might get more support if they went opposite, stop the liberal shit, stop the shit that hasnt worked in 30 years, stop defending criminals.

Anonymous said...

Carranza, the "nice guy" loves restorative justice. Hopefully the nice guy also belives in fair 3%-4% yearly raises for hardworking, middle class teachers.

Here is an idea, VOTE REPUBLICAN!!
Throw all the hood rats in jail if they can’t follow the rules.

Anonymous said...

That worked real well when Republican Rudy Giuliani was mayor and started the war on us with the two years of no raises and constant attacks on us.

Anonymous said...

you mean like 2010 and 2011 with de blasio, and then 10% over 7 years, then retro delayed 11 years, plus teachers getting abused and assaulted by students and admin daily.

Anonymous said...

And charter schools started then in NY under Republican control too. Great advice 11:23, NOT.

Anonymous said...

Forcing Democrats to abandon their corporate wing is a much better idea.

Anonymous said...

You got no retro with two years of zero raises in the nineties. Do the math.

Anonymous said...

And the work environment now is a million times worse. Bottom line, dems have made our living less fruitful, more stressful, more painful, and thats who the UFT says we MUST vote for. Against inflation, we have lost money, plus the 40k im still owed in retro.

Anonymous said...

That deterioration happened while Republican Bloomberg and Republican Pataki were in office in NYC and Albany. Democrat in Name only Cuomo now rules in Albany. DeBlasio is a moron who just inherited the shit and he has done nothing to control deep state at DOE.

Anonymous said...

Republicans, IDC, Cuomo = unlimited charter schools. Conditions worsen.

Anonymous said...

If you think more Republicans are what we need to help public schools, you need to have your head examined. Can you give us examples where Republicans are in powered at the state level and public education is being fully funded? If thousands of teachers are not out in the streets, nothing happens.

Anonymous said...

Dr Blasio is like Clinton not doing much to turn around what Reagan and Bush did.

Anonymous said...

There’s no difference between either party. Everyone is out for #1. The UFT is the most corrupt of all organizations. There should be two separate unions - one for Elementary schools and one for high schools. Mulgrew’s shit doesn’t fly with high school teachers - the elementary teachers are too trusting because they are nurturing small children. - Atlas

Bloomberg isnt a real republican. De blasio had all the power, gave us a 9 year deal, the worst in uft history. Bloomberg also gave us all retro upfront, gave us far better raises than de blasio did. And had Dem president from 2009 to 2016. De blasio gave us double zeroes then pretty much 1% a year going forward AND stole all our retro which is now almost worthless due to inflation, with no interest.

Cuomo and de Blasio aren't real Democrats. Bloomberg and Obama are real Republicans on education. Some don't take the big corporate money. They are our only friends in government.

Anonymous said...

Bloomberg gave us the 2005 contract, Joel Klein and the war on teachers. He wouldn't settle a contract in 2009 or after unless UFT agreed to fire ATRs. Nostalgia for Bloomberg. I have seen it all now.

Anonymous said...

The Uft had no authority then or now to agree to firing ATRs. NYS has LIFO. I’m tired of hearing that bullshit that the UFT saved ATRs jobs. They agreed to fuck us for thirteen years and counting.

BDB could have made everything right and he screwed us. Wait till you see what we give up for paid parental leave.

James Eterno said...

The bill passed in the Republican controlled Senate. Had the UFT agreed to jointly support with DOE the bill to layoff teachers based on performance, it would have carried in the Assembly too. We would have gotten the 4+4 raises in 2010 and I would have been out of a job after Jamaica closed.

Whether the UFT stood its ground based on principle or from pressure from other unions on the horrible precedent it would have set had that law on non seniority layoffs passed is largely irrelevant. They held out.

In 2014, I argued UFT should settle for two years for the 4 +4 other unions got in 2008 and arbitration panel was authorized to recommend and then let PBA lead for next settlement.

Instead, they sold us out to Democrat de Blasio. My point is Republicans and many Democrats are not the answer. The best hope is to organize at the school level and take it from there.

James Eterno said...

I agree with you 2:09 but I disagree with those who say that the answer is to go Republican.

Anonymous said...

What is the latest on contract talks? Any news? What about a buyout? What do we know about new Chancellor?

How about that spot on article from New York Post about those bad principles?

Anonymous said...

City already said, expect roughly 1% raises per year.

Anonymous said...

After the 4 plus 4, never should have agreed to double zero and 10% over 7 years.

Anonymous said...

Retro could have been paid out in 15, 16, 17. Or even 15-18. Going to 2020 is another uft disaster. Not a damn thing good about that deal, which got almost 80% approval.

Anonymous said...

Give ATRs a decent buyout or put us back in the classroom. The UFT didn’t do anyone any good by making us babysitters. The UFT doesn’t get any thanks from me for that. If they had let LIFO go it would have ended the teaching profession for all teachers, not just ATRs, and ex post facto, the UFT.

James Eterno said...

The dues would have kept coming in if LIFO ended. New teachers and senior teachers pay the same amount. Only Janus can change that. Those of you saying we need Republicans should know they voted to end LIFO in 2010 but UFT used our influence with corrupt Democrat Shelly Silver so bill would never reach Assembly floor.

Anonymous said...

Right, and its still torture to go to work every day. How do you explain that?

James Eterno said...

I agree with you. Only way it changes is if school bY school we organize like PS 11 did and say ENOUGH.

Anonymous said...

Another idea, let the ATR’s go if after a certain amount of time they can’t find a job. Other unions have done it, like Chicago. I’ll take a raise please.

Anonymous said...

Suck my cock

Anonymous said...

How do atrs go about finding a job if they have no control over it, even with a great record.

Anonymous said...

A fair atr buyout would make many leave, last years offer was a few months pay, worthless.

Bronx ATR said...

Hi James,
The dues keep coming regardless of LIFO. If it was given up, any and every teacher would be put into jeopardy, if and when an individual"s salary becomes high. A whole department could be closed temporarily (art or music) to excess the staff and have them become unemployed. Also cuts to schools would facilitate this process, as I saw it happen last year, at the school I was in - several teachers became ATRs and the remaining teachers were told they would all be teaching six classes. What I'm getting at is, that the end of LIFO would be a defacto right to work method and would be the death gong for the gong show that is the UFT. The alternative to being an ATR shouldn't be unemployment, it should being placed back in the classroom. It's been over a decade and the UFT hasn't done a thing to facilitate that or anything to improve anything for anyone. Keep the pitiful raise, discount card and customer hot line (or bring them to Chicago) - do something for the rank and file.

How about choice placement? How about placement in staten island for people who live there but are stuck working in brooklyn? When have i done enough effective work to get a job i want?

Anonymous said...

Yeah, ask Mike Sill. After a week he’ll have his ATR call you with let’s see what we can do.

Anonymous said...

I did. Still waiting or help.

Anonymous said...

Pull your dues, it’s time. Right before you do call Sill and tell him why. That’s what I’m going to do.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, its like 20 years with a good record and all im worth is a shoulder shrug. We agree but we cant force principals to hire you. Tired of the toll, gas, bridge traffic. Just not fair.

Anonymous said...

Totally agree, with so many of my colleagues, that the "restorative/social justice" narrative being crammed down our throats for years has born the fruit in the students we see today. And then they double down.
Disagree? Have questions about the evidence and results? You are a racist, sexist, homophobic, fascist...yall know the drill.

Anonymous said...

Cant suspend em all, so let them run wild.

James Eterno said...

Bronx ATR, You are correct and that is how the union was critically wounded in Chicago when union agreed to a time limit for ATR to find job or be fired. Republicans in NY state Senate passed a bill to make layoffs in NYC subject to our evaluation instead of seniority. UFT said no and held out with the corrupt Sheldon Silver not allowing bill to come to floor in Democratic controlled Assembly. That would have been the end of me and UFT had that Republican bill been passed.

Please don't tell us voting Republican will save us as earlier comments suggested.

UFT is either incompetent, in bed with management, impotent or a combination of two or three. However, unless we rise up from below and demand change, it's not happening.

Anonymous said...

I wouldnt expect much except teachers who cant wait to quit or retire.

Anonymous said...

You don’t need a union. You’re employer will take care of you.

@James:

Here are the texts of the Senate and Assembly Sponsor Memos and Bills:

www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2009/s7346/amendment/original

www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2009/a10482/amendment/a

According to the above in the "Actions" section, in neither the Senate nor the Assembly did the bill get out of the Education Committee.

From Chalkbeat in 2011:
A bill that would end the “last in, first out” layoff policy for New York City teachers passed in the State Senate today, but faces an uphill battle in the Assembly.

Introduced late last week by State Senator John Flanagan, a Long Island Republican, the bill rules out seniority as the sole factor in determining who gets laid off. Instead, the bill offers eight pages of an extraordinarily complicated, prioritized list of which teachers and school supervisors would be first in line to be laid off.

The bill passed the Senate 33-27, with support from Republicans and two Democratic Senators — Jeff Klein and David Valesky.
