REGENTS MEETING IN ALBANY JULY 15 AND 16; IS NYC CALENDAR WITH SCHOOL BEING OPEN ON DEC 23 STILL UP FOR DISCUSSION?

Michael Mulgrew made a big deal about how the problem of school being open in NYC on December 23 for the first time ever when the 23rd falls on a Monday was a state issue. This seems a bit weird as every New York State school district where we looked at 2019-20 school calendars has off that day except one: NYC. We are alone.

Mulgrew's weak excuse to the Delegate Assembly was that NYC doesn't have enough instructional hours based on new state regulations. That makes no sense as we have four extra days built into the upcoming year's calendar so it seems we have adequate instructional time to meet state mandates and still have December 23rd off. Mulgrew told the DA that cooler heads should prevail here as the Regents have a June and July meeting. The June meeting has passed and the July meeting of the Regents is today and tomorrow.

As of now there is no NYC calendar change for 2019-20. School is open in NYC on Monday, December 23. We have been on this story since April. It is a UFT giveback for sure.

Is there any movement or discussion on altering the NYC calendar up in Albany or was all of Mulgrew's bluster just mendacity to make us think he is doing something? I hope it is the former. I really do.

If anyone has updated information. please send it out.

  1. So make 12/23 a holiday and give us 3 snow days. How has this not already been done?

  2. We all know the reality that the UFT just wants this to go away. It is not on any agenda.

  3. The UFT agreed to the calendar. That has to be the answer. That is why all the bullshit.

  4. MUGOO IS JUST TRYING TO SAVE FACE. HE LOOKS TERRIBLE AND LIKE A FOOL. ASKING FOR A CHANGE NOW WHEN HE AGREED TO IT IN THE FIRST PLACE MAKES HIM LOOK LIKE HE DOES NOT KNOW WHAT HE IS DOING. THIS SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN AN ISSUE. IT SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN ON THE CALENDAR IN THE FIRST PLACE.

  7. You, and we all, are suckers. The uft doesn't care. Even if they do remove 12/23, does that cure all the disgusting ills this job offers? NO. The fact that it is almost August and we are still worrying and wondering speaks volumes. They can get their $62 per check from someone else.

  9. So, 9:09, if Mulgrew gets 12/23 after all, you will give him no credit anyway. How about you, James,? If he gets the day, does he get a thumbs up? Or are you going to credit others or say it took too long, or his other sins are too grave to give credit?

  10. All this whining about December 23 is a prime example of why all the other city workers (cops firemen sanitation) think we are a bunch of whimpering crud. If you feel that strongly about it, stay home. If you don’t care about working, come in and teach. But shut up about it already there are much bigger problems

  11. Giving us back a day off we always had when December 23 falls on a Monday is the least they can do. The members deserve the credit if this happens. Their rebellion moved the UFT leadership in my opinion. We just provided the facts on this blog and on facebook. Will we get credit for that? I doubt it.

  12. Prehistoric Pedagogue, Yes, there are bigger issues. That said, giving back a day off we always had when it fell on a Monday was just another needless giveback from the UFT. This one is very visible, easy to understand, hard to lie about and totally preventable.

  13. We should have the day off, not have to beg for it. And yes, there are far bigger problems, the job is a disgrace. We only can lose here. Winning would be 5% a year raise instead of 1% and waiting 11 years for $50k on retro with no interest.

  14. We take 1 step forward, 2 steps back. We now are thrilled to get tiny but on time contractual raises, get abused every day at work, no discipline code, fraud transfer system, fraud grading system, fraud suspension and grad rates, the loss of Dec 23 is just another smack in the faceetc, etc, etc...But everyone else can/should keep paying dues?

  15. No matter what anyone says its a disgrace we have to show for one day when there are people traveling, planning vacations etc.

The fact Mulgrew cannot use common sense and take away 1 of the ridiculous four allotted snow days is mind blowing.

I will be in school that day surely annoyed and will probably harass UFT with emails everyday just to bother them.
