WEINGARTEN HOLDING BACK AFT PRESIDENTIAL ENDORSEMENT BECAUSE MEMBERS NEED TO FEEL THEY HAVE A REAL VOICE IN PROCESS

This one goes in the want a good laugh category.

This is from the UFT Twitter Page quoting Randi Weingarten in a NY Times article on why some labor unions are holding back on a 2020 endorsement for President.

From Randi: "For us, it is not just about who shares your values; it's not just about who's electable. It is about, do your members feel like they have a real voice in your process?"

This is from one of the leaders of one of the most top-down organizations I have ever known. What really gets to me is she can say this with a straight face. Does she actually believe it?

Maybe she does because technically she says she wants you to feel like you have a voice, not actually have one.

Quick question: Have any of you been asked by the AFT, NYSUT or UFT about the 2020 Presidential endorsement?

Have any of you ever been asked by the leadership for your opinion on an endorsement in the past twenty years except to rubber stamp a candidate who was picked from on high?

Randi was the biggest waste when with the UFT. She reduced our fixed TDA account to 7percent while administrators still enjoy 8.25 percent returns. She lied to us by stating that the CSA was also agreeing to the reduced 7 percent which never did happen. Stopped union dues 15 years ago and it was my best decision ever.

Couldn't stop dues 15 years ago. You paid agency fee.

Any chance of 12/23 being off? Still waiting for direct uft answer.

Every ATRocity that Bloomberg rained and reigned down us was because of Weingarten’s malfeasance. Bloomy’s business model is still in effect via his principals, Fair Student Funding and his upper management clones that are still in office. She split post haste to become AFT president and has since screwed many the varied chapter nationwide. She single handedly chose Hillary while denigrating the majority (of teachers) that supported Bernie as ‘thugs’. When questioned about it she said she took a poll but couldn’t produce it or the numbers of those asked or their responses. That incompetent BS artist should have resigned years ago - she’s an LGBTQ Donald Trump - a complete and utter fraud.

Endorsements by themselves mean nothing - it's all about the money, the phone banks, feet on the ground, etc., that's important. That equals money. Yes, that money comes from COPE (legally), but don't kid yourself, Unions have people "volunteering" (which is a form of donation) to help the chosen candidates. And quite frankly, endorsements are window dressing, nothing more. Yes, of course a union will (hopefully) endorse a candidate who favors them. But has that really happened in the past decade? The rise of charter schools, loosening the restrictions on terminating public employees, etc., has occurred under the watch of government leaders who the UFT endorsed. You might argue that they were/are still better than the alternative, but why still support them? Hold back on the actual support until candidates (don't care which party) actively support US!
Also, while it is the role of a Union to tell it's members "Please support so-and-so" in order to help union members, there are other factors as well. I have to also take into account that I'm a husband, a father, a car driver, a property owner, a citizen, etc. When politicians tell the unions that they are for the working man, it means 'hide my wallet.' And when I see politicians doing nothing to help teachers, or worse yet, actively work against us, the endorsement means nothing. I'm not going to vote in a politician who says they are 'friendly' to unions, yet want no crackdown on illegal immigrants or voting fraud, want higher taxes, junk science, and so on.

UFT endorsements are all over the map- IDC member D. Carlucci got an endorsement. Bill Thompson got an endorsement last time around, but not when he ran to unseat Bloomberg before Bloomberg's 3rd term when a UFT endorsement might have helped. UFT endorsed Clinton. The UFT did not endorse anyone in the 2014 Governor's race, but Weingarten personally called me (robo call) to tell me to vote for Hochul- Cuomo's Lt.

Come on, you think now, in the middle of september, they are going to get rid of 12/23?

Rumor has it.

Rumor, what rumor? And when?

On a teacher facebook page, a chapter leader had a question...She said that a teacher already resigned and wants to know if they are getting the retro next month, so the CL is asking the general public. What? First, you are a CL and asking other teachers? 2nd, it is the most obvious part of the contract, made very clear, if you are not on payroll at time of payment you dont get it. This is the problem. This is who represents us. But keep paying dues?

This is a CL? She knows nothing. This is uft help? A coworker who started in the DOE six years ago left this year and moved to a DOE in upstate NY. He got retro payouts in the past and he asked me, as the chapter leader, if he's going to get the retro pay this year. Logic days he would since it is retro pay from a contract renegotiation, but I know logic doesn't always prevail. I know similar conversations have happened on this page, so I apologize if this has already been asked and answered. Does anyone know who I can go to do I can get him an answer, or do you know?

Another genius teacher. Started working just now, but not getting "their retro".

I am not even getting my retro

HUh? Explain, please.

I just started last year so I am not sure if I am getting my retro this october

No further retro if you resign before the date of the retro payout

Article 3P of contract first line:

Lump Sum Payments Stemming From the 2009-2011 Round of Bargaining
1. Schedule for actives for those continuously employed as of the day of payout:

i. 10/1/15 – 12.5%
ii. 10/1/17 – 12.5%
iii. 10/1/18 – 25%
iv. 10/1/19 – 25%
v. 10/1/20 – 25%

It says continuously employed as of date of payment.

Idiots still asking about retro.

Why not ask about why it was held for 11 years with no interest or why we got a 10% raise for 7 and a half years? And then tacked on 7.5% for almost 4 years. My dues at work.

While raising our medical costs. And they managed to ruin the Christmas break.

Teachers are pretty dumb. The leadership either doesn't care or cant make things better. Students mostly dont care and are extremely nasty and disrespectful. Many are gang members or are involved in criminal activity. Every contract gets worse. That is a toxic combo.
