NYC HAS WORST URBAN AREA COVID-19 DEATH NUMBERS IN THE U.S.

As more Americans are vaccinated and COVID case numbers have declined and now kind of leveled off, I am getting the impression that many New Yorkers, including the mayor and governor, are ready to move on from the coronavirus pandemic restrictions. Are we at that point yet?

Gothamist reports that there were 63 NYC deaths yesterday from COVID-19 and 95 in NYS. They also state that NYC had 3,514 new cases. That is still way too high.

As for the schools, I received an email from my daughter's school. Here is a part of it:

To all MS 172 Families:

The Department of Education has notified MS 172 that the school will be closed through March 19 due to multiple confirmed cases of COVID 19. All students will continue in remote learning. Please continue to check your phone messages and emails for school closure and re-opening updates.

I get these emails regularly from my childrens' schools. Are many of the students and teachers attending in-person really benefiting from this Bill de Blasio public relations stunt? Saying the high schools are opening on March 22 is the definition of a misleading statement as so few pupils will be served in school buildings.

COVID-19 is not yet under control. The mayor who has played such a huge role in NY's terrible COVID response is still in power making crucial decisions as is the embattled governor.

If Bill deBlasio runs for any elected position in the future, I would trust that his opponent will show this depressing chart.

But high school staff return next week. Dues well spent

Anonymous said...

With only 20 percent of kids enrolled for in person learning, what is the purpose of opening up? Kids need consistency. We're only going to disrupt kids again. I know many high schools where teachers will have their programs changed so they get either a fully remote or fully in school. Great idea to change kids teachers at the end of March. Again, it's never about the kids but to make the politicians look better.

NY democrats no longer have a foil in Trump. Everything is opening up here because dems are free to show their true colors and tell you to go fuck yourself. They know New York democrats will vote for them no matter how many times they spit in their face. It’s over. No more Trump, no more need for the democrats to pretend they agreed with you. This is Biden’s 52nd day in office. He wants schools open, looking for an open schools czar and is looking at a NYC DOE chief of staff to fill position. COVID infected illegal immigrants pouring into our cities, kids still in cages, killed the $15 minimum wage and reneged on the $2000. They don’t need dem voters anymore just like they don’t need Cuomo anymore. Take a break for now. Theyll be back. They’ll be pretending again during the upcoming mayoral, gubernatorial and mid term races.

I am NOT a Democrat by any way but you can't argue how nice it was to hear a normal speech. Whether you agree with it or not, is up to you. It was good to hear someone with a plan and someone who didn't think the virus will magically go away.

The problem is the virus showed America's true colors. Our "freedom" means "I can do what I want" and I don't care about the virus. The only saving grace is the vaccine because we handled this terribly as a people. Trump deserves all the credit for Operation Warp Speed. He was the only President to get a vaccine going this early. Biden will carry out a plan to get needles in arms.

I have faith. Any Republican but Trump in 2024.

Moose.

Was great to find out trump took the vaccine in secret in January. Now i feel like i can get it since its ok for him. Wish he told us sooner.

Anonymous said...

9:05....do you realize how ridiculous you sound. You're a teacher, you should be more intelligent than Trump. Act on your own accord as opposed to following him blindly. Just for the record, I didn't vote for either of those to two dopes. This country is pathetic to consider itself a democracy with only 2 candidates on the ballot. What a joke, both the dems and repubs are pathetic that neither can select a viable candidate.

Anonymous said...

James, it saddens me that you aren't as outraged as I am at Randi and Mulgrew. What will it take? Are you that into the democrat propaganda that Randi tweets every night? Are you blinded? Do you see what is going on in this country?

TJL said...

How in the world was that a normal speech? It's as if Biden* is living in some dystopian alternate reality. Maybe you can gather in a small group by July 4? Maybe you can go to school? Sane people have been doing that since last summer, we don't need to wait for this one.

On topic: LA and NYC, draconian lockdown cities, high deaths, but Seattle and SF also draconian lockdown cities, low deaths. In regard to free cities (I can't even believe I have to write that in America) Miami has an elevated rate yet Tampa/St. Pete does well. The same can be said looking at semi-free (thanks to leftist R governor Abbott) Dallas and Houston with good rates and semi-draconian Philly (elevated rate). So what good is it doing to keep these totalitarian lockouts in place, and at what cost?

The mayor is failing, City offices need to be opened, he needs to be at a restaurant, museum and movie theater every day and publicizing it.

Anonymous said...

I don’t think 9:05 followed Trump blindly. If he had, he would have gotten the vaccine when Trump said to. Instead 9:05 didn’t quite trust Trump so 9:05 waited until Trump took vaccine. If I’m correct, I’ll bet 9:05 heard Harris and CNN etc mock Trump when he said we’d have an effective vaccine in a year. They sowed the vaccine mistrust all across America. Also, I’ve worked in 4 schools. In each school 1/3 of the staff were morons. It shouldn’t shock you to find dumb teachers.

Anonymous said...

So this one time payment, according to Randi, brings everyone out of poverty. Can someone explain that to me?

Joe Biden forgot to mention that his American Rescue Plan gives

$600M: San Francisco
$800M: foreign food aid
$470M: the arts
$100M: EPA to address “pollution”
$20M: “language preservation”
$86B: pension bailout that pre-dates COVID-19
$1.7B: Amtrak

11:20, James understands that mass layoffs are coming. That is why we are at the whim of what the city wants. They're going to KILL those that survive the layoffs and cut pay for those that stay. If pay remains frozen, that will be declared a victory. Online cohorts will be a thing moving forward. 50-60 kids in a class- maybe more. That's why the UFT is rolling over. That and the fake news media has been character assassinating us.

James Eterno said...

Mass layoffs are not coming. We have a no layoff agreement as long as there was a federal bailout of state and local governments. The $1.9 trillion federal rescue has plenty of local bailout money. No possible layoffs until July 2022 in NYC. That was agreed to for us deferring the retro one last time.

Anonymous said...

I have to laugh. No possible layoffs because we have a deal. We also had a deal to get our final retro payment Oct 2020. And we had a deal for spring break for eons. But this time will be different. It’s battered wife syndrome. He’ll change. He promised. Get out of the abusive relationship and save 1600 per year.

James Eterno said...

The city got their bailout money from DC. No way they back out of no layoffs.

James I hope you're right, maybe you can do a post on the particulars of the agreement. Like you say the devil is in the details. Does the City get to weasel out because it's not the identical "Heroes Act" or the price tag was "only" 1.9T instead of 3.2T?

Henry Levine said...

That data doubtless includes deaths from the 1st spike last March that we know was a total public health failure, since it got spiking before any policy was implemented at all, virus allowed to run rampant.
How is the comparison if we remove the first wave?

Shelley said...

Henry Levine is on to something here. Anyone who is honest about it, or anyone who understands basic statistics, would look at the data and see that the spike keeps NYC, the NYC Metro area, NY State, and NJ at the top of the heap, an that that spike doesn't say much about what's going down now and nor what policy should be used to keep people safe and alive now.

Opening schools may save lives. Yes, that's right.

But can those who are so far on one side of this thing now even think that possible?

Probably not.

How about the fact that the state is still sending COVID patients to homes for the disabled? Cuomo behind bars or in one of those homes.

5:56am...there was never going to be $2000. This is always been the biggest misconception. When the second stimulus plan was being announced everyone settled on $600 per adult. President Trump said he wanted $2000. Some Dems and a few republicans agreed but it never passed and was left at $600. The 3rd stimulus package makes up for that shortage and gives the rest of the money to reach $2000...hence the $1400.

I was a Trump supporter but please stop saying Biden didn't deliver. this is exactly what he did regarding the $2000.

However, the latest news I saw was that half of Italy will be back in lockdown due to ta new variant —starting Monday in addition to the UK and other European countries. Wasn’t it last February that the Italian medical community was over burdened with Covid and a similar scenario would play out in the USA—but of course Trump downplayed said ‘all will be well—by Easter’. How did his public health plan work out?

No one knows how the next few months are going to play out—but too many American people are spoiled and selfish. It’s great to see restrictions are being lifted little by little all over—but what will happen if this next European surge hits here.again. Problem with having summer school mandatory is that the same kids are going to cut who cut school all year, so it would have little effect. What makes them think these kids are going to be more motivated in the summer. I've worked summer school in the past, and you can get some kids to pass as long as you don't give homework, do all the work with them in class and don't count attendance.

Anonymous said...

You ignored Pritzker, Cuomo, Murphy, Newsom and Lamont who faired far worse than FL while having strict restrictions, I wonder why. 1 of those governors is being recalled, another may be impeached or arrested.

Anonymous said...

Deathsantis is a proven liar when it comes to COVID-19 statistics.

When Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Florida ranked 34th among states in per capita pediatric COVID-19 cases, he was making an invalid comparison between states, the NBC 6 Investigators found and an epidemiologist Thursday confirmed..

That's because rate for Florida in the American Academy of Pediatrics report excluded all children over 14 -- something the report noted in four places. All the other states, except Utah, had older children counted in their totals.

Anonymous said...

TAMPA (WFLA) – There are new concerns that more people in Florida may be dying from the pandemic than we thought.

According to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, our state’s official death toll could be off by thousands.

Deathsantis and Cuomo should get along well. The Orlando Sentinel newspaper had to sue to get COVID-19 information.
Some legal cases are complex. This one was not. It was a slam dunk; the legal equivalent of Shaquille O’Neal trying to score on a 4-foot Nerf goal.

At first, the state tried to claim it wasn’t intentionally hiding the reports, but that it was just so darn busy with things — like other lawsuits — that it couldn’t get around to providing the reports in a timely manner.

But, as Miller reported earlier: “When the judge pressed them for a list of other litigation, the state attorneys backtracked their statement and said they were busy monitoring the election.”

I believe the Latin legal term for the state’s excuse was Bullimus Crapimus.

After their flimsy excuses crumbled, the state’s lawyers quickly caved, handing over the reports, agreeing to promptly share future weekly dispatches and coughing up $7,500 to cover our newspaper’s legal fees.

Does anyone have any news? The Gounardes bill is in the Rules committee.

Mulgrew said we may know by April 1 [yes, I see the irony there].

My instinct tells me getting so much Fed $ probably makes the ERI less likely, but supposedly NYS has a deficit even with the Fed stimulus support.

Also it just seems like, in NYC, they would support replacing top $ veteran teachers with cheaper new teachers. It fits the current narrative.

Biden or Trump, are not saviors, and Cuomo has already been taken off the list. Think for yourself. Turn off the TV. Read. Break your addiction to your cell phone. Ask questions and research. Our entire populace is being manipulated. We are being tracked, listened to and algorithms are being developed based on the information. Facial recognition is now being allowed and becoming commonplace because of the need to identify those wearing masks. Combine that with your DNA, and your entire linage and their choices will soon be predicted especially with the advent of quantum computing. Much of it is for marketing (Pharmaceuticals, healthcare, entertainment) and some of it is just diabolical populace control. Be aware.

I've seen people in my life die from COVID. I have seen how careless people are when it comes to protocols. Not surprisingly, more rule breakers in Long Island than the five boroughs.

So, COVID is happening. 1918 Spanish Flu was quite similar in the way the events are occurring now. We wore masks then, we tried to mitigate virus spread by moving activities outside, and yep - conspiracy theorists existed then as well thinking the whole thing was fake. But, two years out at the start of a new decade, it was an event of the past.

People want to believe COVID is fake because they can't handle or adapt to the changes that have occurred in their lives as a result. Which shows a lot of immaturity because a key skill of being an adult is being able to adapt to changes.

COVID will go away. It has been a year since it was first recognized. We'll get through this just like how we got through the 1918 Spanish flu, just like how we got past the 1957-1958 pandemic, 1968 pandemic, and so on.

Were all those pandemics of the past fake too?

I educate myself on things that will make me a better person and have more appreciation for my life (you know since I also had COVID and struggled to survive that as well).

I could sit and search and search and search for things to be upset about or things that will upset me. Or, I could just enjoy the time I have on this earth because you never know when it will be your last. I have had to unfortunately learn this lesson twice over the span of my life.

This will go away but who you are will stay. Would you want to stay the same?

Stay safe!

About 22% of the total bill comes from the $422 billion set aside for $1,400-per-person stimulus checks. Another 13% ($246 billion) is for extending additional unemployment funding of $400 a week.

A combined 12% is going to:

Subsidized COBRA for laid-off workers.

Affordable Care Act subsidies for the next two years.

Expanded nutrition assistance to replace school lunch programs during the pandemic.

Funding for testing and contact tracing.

Disaster Relief Fund increases and covering COVID-19-related funeral expenses.

Grants to airlines and contractors to freeze layoffs through September.

Defense Production Act funding for medical supplies.

Grants for restaurants and bars that have lost revenue in the pandemic.

Economic Injury Disaster Loan Advance grants of up to $10,000 per business.

Another $519 billion – 27% of the total – is going to state and local governments and schools, much of which will make up losses related to the pandemic and help schools reopen. Republicans note much of the school funding, however, won’t be spent immediately.
