PETITION FOR SAFE SCHOOLS OR SAFETY WALKOUTS (Updated)

Daniel Alicea from Educators of NYC and others including me wrote some clear demands that the NYC Department of Education should meet before anyone returns to NYC schools. Schools need to be safe. This evening Daniel turned it into a change.org petition

I urge everyone to sign it and spread the word. The UFT is saying basically nothing in public on what it would take for a safe return to schools even though teachers report to work in just four short weeks. President Michael Mulgrew declared that we reached herd immunity at the June Delegate Assembly and added that he hoped the virus would be done by the end of the summer. Since then, we have heard very little on a safe return for the fall from the UFT.

The UFT plan seems to be to pretend COVID has gone away and so to start the schools like it's 2019. The evidence does not support this view. AFT President Randi Weingarten called for a vaccine mandate for teachers. UFT: silence so far. Remember when 3% positivity meant close the schools in NYC. See below for the latest NYC positivity rate. At least the UFT had a plan in 2020 but now with Delta being a real danger for kids, particularly those not vaccinated, the UFT says teachers should do what they did last year but just upgrade it for more students. This won't work. Remember, children under 12 years of age are currently not eligible for vaccines. We need a union to fight for a safe reopening for UFTers and students of NYC now!

Please read and sign the petition below. Anti-vaxxers and COVID deniers, kindly find another site to spread misinformation.

DANIEL ALICEA started this petition to New York City Public Schools and

The Mayor and New York City Department of Education have promised a full safe reopening of our school buildings, but have yet to communicate any plans for doing so. With the surge of the Delta variant, the most transmissible COVID-19 variant to date and most dangerous among youth to date, and an explosion of cases, hospitalizations and deaths that rival numbers from previous COVID-19 waves, a comprehensive safety action plan must be shared with all, now.

The undersigned members of the United Federation of Teachers and, New York City parents and families, demand that the New York City Department of Education implement the following steps in order to reopen our school buildings safely because we believe in-person learning is an option for parents and guardians, if deemed safe by authorities, while still offering a remote option.

We DEMAND:

1.  Mandated vaccinations - Anyone 12 years of age or older entering a DOE facility, including but not limited to school buildings, should possess proof of being fully vaccinated against Covid-19. The unvaccinated must not be allowed entrance in instructional spaces (unless there is a documented medical exemption).

2. Mandated masking - Everyone within the premises of a DOE facility must have a mask on at all times, except for eating at proper times. Failure to do so will result in their immediate removal.

3. Heightened COVID Testing and Tracing Protocols - Weekly random testing of at least 33% of the entire school communities. There must be baseline testing for all students and staff in September. We expect clear, strict and concise procedures in place for quarantine and closing down schools when there is a COVID outbreak. This includes a return to a school-wide 14 day quarantine based on a total threshold of 3 or more positive cases within the school community.  Baseline testing for all those returning from quarantine.

4. Strict adherence to social distancing - There must be strict adherence to at least 3 feet of social distancing at all times. Distance is subject to increase if authorities deem so.

5. Proper, Science-Based Ventilation in all DOE facilities- We demand for scientifically proven methods to control and monitor the spread of airborne diseases, including COVID, that include enhanced ventilation with outdoor air, and high efficiency filtration. Sites must be inspected and certified by a board certified industrial hygienist before anyone is allowed in the facility.

6. A Remote Option - A remote learning option for all parents/guardians that want to opt for one.

7. No Learning Loss Screenings/Diagnostics and Focus on SEL, trauma-informed supports - There will be no academic screening/diagnostic assessments for so-called deficit of learning/learning loss. Rather, we must focus resources on the social-emotional well-being of our students by funding after school programs, PSAL, counseling, social service and weekend programs.  We desire a pause in required high stakes state standardized testing until performance based alternatives are explored.

8.  Increased transparency, tracking capability and reliability in COVID-19 data reporting - We demand an updated COVID-19 city wide dashboard that is more transparent, meaningful and reliable in its data reporting of COVID-19 incident cases, hospitalizations and deaths that tracks over 90 day intervals and shows vaccination rates.

Failure to implement these demands will result in a coalition of educators and parents urging UFT members, families and students to stay out of buildings deemed unfit until they are safe for teaching and learning.

Sign the petition, please!

Friday Update:

Daniel has provided more infofmation  as the petition is starting to gain a bit of traction. Please sign on.

My first thought was "not this again", as far as the threats of a walkout, but the demands are all very reasonable.

If the vax is so stellar, why the mandatory masking and all the quaramtines, testing, and rrmote option??either it works or it doesn't.obviously, this person knows that it doesn't! so then why mandate it??why not mandate masking, testing, closures, etc?pick one side because they conflict.
UfT is America's dumbest.congratulations on a title well earned!

The writer should not unilaterally threaten a walkout without the official approval vote of members.he talks out of his ass.who is this nut?i guess you are all willing to lose 2 days pay for each walkout day?they know this threat will not materialize.then credibility is lost, whuch is more damaging.

Anonymous said...

And, nobody walked out in march 2020.now there is a vax this wont go anywhere.

Wait, i almost died laughing. A walkout? Is this like the strke mulgrew threatned? Right before he sent 100k members into the famous petri dish? You guys are pretty gullible.

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer in AMNY

The outgoing borough president sent a letter to Chancellor Porter requesting that she reconsider the City’s decision to do away with remote learning this year. The letter was also sent to all of Brewer’s fellow borough presidents and the city’s executive superintendents.

“The option may be needed for the entire school year. However, having an option in place for at least the first half of the year is a prudent response to family and community requests,” Brewer wrote.” In addition, we are in a different place in the battle against COVID-19 than we were when it was first announced that there would be no remote option for the upcoming school year.”

Again a lot of talk, talk, talk. You had me until you had the remote option on there. Remote options should only be for students 12 and under. Also, why do we need mask mandates if everyone is vaccinated that enters the school. Sounds contradictory.

Anonymous said...

Did you not read? There is no vaccine for kids under 12

James Eterno said...

Check the attendance rate on March 12 and 13, 2020. Plenty of students and staff did not show up. One of the main reasons schools were closed before March 16 is because so many staff members called in sick the day before.

As usual the nyc doe doesn’t care what parents want. With a year of planning they could have a plan in place to satisfy most teachers and parents. They never bothered to try and figure out a remote option for parents who want it and a survey of teachers who also want remote. I’m anti vaccine mandate but I also believe that unless a teacher has a medical exemption for the vaccine, they can choose to vaccinate and not fear dying or being hospitalized by virus. Remote based on medical exemptions for vaccine and then by seniority seems fair. It’s a big deal issue because the doe is incompetent at rolling out effective and efficient plans as is the UFT.

People already criticizing the petition but what are YOU guys doing? Anything? Or are you just going to wait until September to sit outside again with your laptops while complaining? If not a threat of a walkout, then what? I'm not leaving my job. I'm vaccinated and feel fairly protected and I'm not walking out to protect adults who dont want to vaccinate. As for the children, the parents have to make their voices heard. There has to be a threat of sometime and a walkout may not be it, but a petition is a start.

914. Mask helps with spread. Vaccine helps with severity of disease and level of risk. Nothing is 100%.

Anonymous said...

Also, there IS or rather, WAS a remote option. Supposedly there were some positions posted for remote teachers and remote students. Did anyone even know about this and apply?

I've been doing summer school all summer with semi to full classes each period. Two students in two different classes of mine tested positive for Covid. I got tested on Tuesday even though I'm vaccinated because I'm going away next week. I was negative which shows you the effectiveness of the vaccine. I also don't wear my mask fully up.

I am a Long Island parent. I signed because I am in full support of NYC fight. I have been advocating and specifically fighting for remote learning option to remain for the 2021-2022 school year state wide. In my opinion if NYC acts then districts all over the state tend to follow. Student of NYC and all around NYS need a Remote Learning option for this school year.

Anonymous said...

New piece at nyceducator.com this morning analyzes the problem and states the need quite well.

Most schools have students with very bad acts. All those rules stay on the paper which are not good enough to wipe anybody's butt.

10:58: I see you're a parent and are concerned, but trust me 70 percent of high school kids opted for remote learning and it wasn't because they were afraid of Covid. They wanted to be able to stay home and sleep and do the work when they want. Most kids did nothing all year which shows you remote doesn't work.

Where did you pull your data from, 11:24?

Can you back it up?

Yes, i read the post.how can anyone vaccinate all ages 12+ by sept.assuming all the parents are willing?it talks about 12+, not under 12.read again...
Again, who among us will give up 2 days pay for each day lost and risk their position?
Interesting that prior to vaccination, there basically no variants to speak of...although it was in countriescwhere they were doing vaccine experiments.interesting observation point...

Currently working summer school There are certain safety reqt's in place but they are really just in name only. When all the kids come back I see two main scenario's. One with a lot of bumps in the road school goes on as it normally does or two, the threat is very real and it spreads like wildfire and a lot of people-kids and adults get very very sick. The only thing for certain I see is that the schools safety procedures are were and will always be a bad bad joke.

James, being absent 2 days is diff than an unpaid walkout.and even if walkout would cause a change, it would take time to implement, which would be a big pay loss.

Because vaccine isn’t mandatory and you don’t know who is vaccinated and who isn’t. And kids under 12 can’t be vaccinated. And there’s no remote option for medically fragile and high risk kids. I don’t want my kid getting sick because someone eligible chose not to be vaccinated.

Seems like you all have so much confidence in the jab. 20,000 plus will easily stop paying dues if they require a mandate because the scared babies who got vaccinated keep crying. Morons do not even see thousands of issues being reported from the shot, whether it's a change in menstruation or heart issues. I Hate tic toc and I see in my feeds all these people who got the shot begging people not to get it, or they have major issues after receiving the shot. The flu and other vaccines have been around 60 plus years, this shot has been around less than a year.

Stopping Johnson and Johnson after 10 people got side effects was also an idiotic move which gave more doubt to taking this experimental vaccine. Divide and conquer is real and the elites, media, and china are laughing to the bank.

@6:44

"In New York City, there are more unvaccinated White people than Black people, despite the difference in vaccination rates."

"It estimates that Black Americans make up about 13 percent of the unvaccinated population and 13 percent of the group that says it will never receive a dose of the vaccine. Republicans, by contrast, make up more than half of each group, including nearly 6 in 10 of those who say they won’t get vaccinated.'

"the question of access is important. In February, NPR mapped vaccine distribution sites, finding that more-White neighborhoods often had better access. In June, with access more broadly available, The Washington Post looked at the process in Philadelphia, where officials proactively tried to account for a number of structural issues that Black residents might face."

"It’s also disingenuous to compare Black and White vaccination rates overall, since White rates are actually higher in part because so many White people are Democrats! Those making this comparison are essentially using high vaccination support among White Democrats as a way to disparage lower rates among Black people."

@6:44

Whites have a higher vaccination rates because of DEMOCRATS, not Trump supporters. "After all, most White New Yorkers are Democrats, meaning that one might expect there to be a higher vaccination rate among Whites there than in places where Whites are more heavily Republican (and, therefore, vaccine skeptical)"

"One of the three vaccines — the single-shot Johnson & Johnson — had been directed to Black and Latino communities, among other places. It required only one shot — not two like the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines"

"This fear was echoed in interview after interview, from the Bronx to South Brooklyn, as many Black New Yorkers said the Johnson & Johnson suspension left them more anxious that the vaccines were unsafe, insufficiently tested and steered to Black neighborhoods. That fear has been slow to dissipate, even as much of the rest of the country got vaccinated.

“They’re experimenting on us,” said Knya White, 21, of Canarsie, Brooklyn, a predominantly Black neighborhood."

Anon 2323, Just stop please. From one of the stories you linked to:

"I saw my dad, how sick as he was,” she said. “I can’t imagine how much more he would have suffered if he had not gotten the vaccine.”

“I think she’s right,” said Dr. Jan Patterson, an infectious disease specialist at UT Health.

Patterson said the reported 43 breakthrough deaths out of nearly 9,000 deaths in Texas since February, “were in people who had underlying conditions and were very elderly.”

Rudy Arispe, spokesman for the Metropolitan Health District, said of the more 1,500 deaths last week, only four were fully vaccinated.

“All had severe underlying medical conditions and other factors that contributed,” Arispe said.

Although the Delta variant is much more transmissible, Patterson said “We do know that the vaccine is highly effective against hospitalizations and death the majority of the time.”

8:58 what are you squawking about now? I've been advocating for in-person from the start. No remote option for the unvaccinated slicksters or anyone else. But certainly if there IS going to be s remote option it shouldnt go to lazy unvaccinated who are deathly afraid of the jab, so that they can continue to milk the system while the in-person teachers deal with their bulletin boards and testing crap. I was in-person last year. What about you??

You're all over "tic toc" (LOL) and dont even know how spell it. You have zero credibility. Remember how you laughed at James for posting about VAERS when he was only responding to YOUR link on VAERS?? Then you posted a link about Trump that trashed him and James pointed it out. ROFLMAO. "About 99.999% of fully vaccinated Americans have not had a deadly Covid-19 breakthrough case, CDC data shows."

That's from CNN.

In addition, FDA is recommending a booster for certain people.

From NPR:

The FDA announced that it has authorized a third COVID-19 vaccine dose for people with weakened immune systems.

The Food and Drug Administration is authorizing an additional dose of a COVID-19 vaccine for certain people with weakened immune systems caused either by disease, medical treatments or organ transplants.

The move comes after studies have shown these people may not have sufficient immunity to head off the more serious complications of COVID-19 after the standard vaccine regimen.

Late Thursday night, the FDA amended the emergency use authorizations for both the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines to allow for an additional dose for certain immunocompromised people, specifically, solid organ transplant recipients or those who are diagnosed with conditions that are considered to have an equivalent level of immunocompromise. The CDC estimates the population to be less than three percent of adults.

"The country has entered yet another wave of the COVID-19 pandemic," said acting FDA Commissioner Dr. Janet Woodcock, noting that immunocompromised people are particularly at risk for severe disease. "After a thorough review of the available data, the FDA determined that this small, vulnerable group may benefit from a third dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna Vaccines," Woodcock said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is convening a meeting of its immunization advisory committee Friday to consider the scientific evidence supporting the FDA's action and whether to recommend the additional dose for these people. The committee will also evaluate more broadly the need for a booster for people who are not immunocompromised.

Some countries have already started administering an additional dose to seniors based on studies showing a decline in immunity over time. The committee is not scheduled to take any action on the broader question of boosters for the general population.

At a White House briefing Thursday, Dr. Anthony Fauci said there is a need for boosters for these people whose immune systems do not produce a strong response to the regular vaccine regimen. And while he believes that boosters will ultimately be needed for the general population, that time has not arrived yet.

James, Why is everyone so scared of the unvaccinated if you have a . 001% chance of dying if you are vaccinated?

1:03 I’ve been pointing out the high percentage of black and brown in nyc. Not doing so to disparage anyone but the phony white liberals who want the unvaccinated shunned from society as long as they’re Trump voters. But when the high percentage of nyc unvaccinated turn out to black democrats, they have nothing to say. They still want them shunned, they’re just too afraid to publicly demand it. What’s Deblasio’s plan to enforce his fascist rules? He is going to hurt the very people he pretends to give a shit about. Is he going to send nypd or City Marshals to check patrons’ vax status and close black owned restaurants if they’re not enforcing his bullshit vax app? If he forces them to comply, they’ll lose revenue and have to close shop. No matter which way it goes, it’s not the restaurants on the Upper West or East Side and their wealthy white patrons who will suffer. BLM until the B don’t comply with the government vaccine mandates, then their lives and livelihoods don’t mean shit. I suspect there will be no enforcement because as dumb as DeBlasio is, he knows what the optics will be if he tries to enforce in black and brown neighborhoods.

I couldn't make out what it said at first, but the writing was "My Body, My Choice" with an image of a needle and a big X across it. They don't want to share their vaccination status with the workplace, or establishments, which subjected the rest of us to wearing mask, but they'll wave a big flag from their car as a big "fuck you" to the rest of us, while wearing the "moron" shirt that McCarthy is selling them. It's certainly fitting.

11:45 everyone saw your ridiculous posts and you absolutely did disparage black and brown people and liberals and you are STILL obsessed with them. Did I miss anyone? Are you mad because liberals insult unvaccinated Trump voters, but not black and brown people? Well boo fucking hoo. I haven't heard anyone say that black and brown people shouldn't be subject to the same restrictions as anyone else and nobody has to say anything publicly because it's COMMON SENSE that if you're unvaccinated then the rules will apply to you. Being able to enforce it is another thing entirely. Just as they couldn't enforce voluntary masking because they couldn't tell who was who. YOU are the only one who is trying to turn this into white vs. black, although you're now trying to blame "white liberals" because your entire narrative has been debunked by the article. I have seen efforts (as the article notes) to provide them ACCESS and education, and there is nothing wrong with that. It's only in your own thick skull that liberals only want Trump supporters shunned. Where EXACTLY did you read that?

You're back to harping on what DiBlasio is going to do and trying to insult liberals as being "paralyzed" because they can't say with a certainty what his next steps are. It's DUMB. Just shut up. Nobody cares about your racist feigned concern or whatever the hell it is. Sounds more like jealousy that black and brown aren't being picked on like Trump voters. Grow up.

Republicans don't want to get the vaccine because it is only emergency use approved and they don't want the "Fauci Ouchie" so DeSanti's fix for that is to suggest that instead people wait until they get sick and use an emergency use approved treatment, Regeneron, where they'll have to take four shots in the stomach, or two in the stomach, and two in the arm. Ultimately, many (black and brown peole) also said they would get vaccinated if forced to do so.

“If it’s going to be mandatory to work, I’ll have no choice,” said Kaleshia Sostre, a 27-year-old from Red Hook, Brooklyn, who teaches parenting classes to young mothers.

In Canarsie, Brooklyn, a 21-year-old college student, Justin Mercado, said Mayor Bill de Blasio’s recent announcement that dining in a restaurant would require proof of vaccination got his attention. He is now likely to get vaccinated.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

So don't you worry your pretty little head @7:24. I think black and brown people will survive without your frenzied screeching, and faux concern. You'll just have to find someone else to hide behind. Racist.

Anonymous said...

@7:24 which is it? Earlier you said that you are upset that "phony white liberals who want the unvaccinated shunned from society as long as they’re Trump voters". Sounds like you don't care if brown/black people are shunned, in fact you're calling out liberals for not shunning them.

Then you wrote "I suspect there will be no enforcement", so you understand that police won't be kicking down people's doors because of the vaccine, and people won't be losing their businesses for being unvaccinated (might still happen if the virus beings to surge here but you don't really care about that).

Then you say "you want black businesses to obey which will force them to go out of business".

So it's clear, you're just angry that there will be vaccine mandates and you're raging mad that black/brown people (who are prone to violence if asked for vaccination status), are also not vaccinated and somehow it's liberals fault, and I'm the racist. ROFLMAO

Republicans are so desperate to win the mask and vaccine mandate edicts that their new tactic is to claim that they are opposed to them because they are trying to help black and brown people and Liberals should join them in this argument. That's pretty funny.

11:28 says "I’ve been pointing out the high percentage of black and brown in nyc. Not doing so to disparage anyone but the phony white liberals who want the unvaccinated shunned from society as long as they’re Trump voter" Is he going to send nypd or City Marshals to check patrons’ vax status and close black owned restaurants if they’re not enforcing his bullshit vax app?

Which is it today? I thought you were so concerned about their restaurants closing? About them being chased by the police, if they didn't do "what the government told them to do"? Now you're upset that they're going to vaccinate. You really are so full of shit.

Yup triggered racists want the black man to comply. Racist and dumb. Can’t figure out what someone who just wants freedom wants. Freedom, morons. Freedom for the black owned businesses to serve the mostly unvaccinated in their communities so they can stay in business. You still want them to comply, don’t ya, racist.

Bwahahaha @ the racist idiot @11:12 still beating that same tired drum. Squawking like an injured bird and still pretending s/he cares about the black owned businesses, while talking with a forked tongue and insulting them by claiming they're prone to violence, and suggesting they're cowards for agreeing to take the vaccine. Keep twisting moron, you might finally convince yourself.

11:12 you poor thing. Still triggered over black folks. They're not helping you out either, eh? It doesn't matter how much you pretend to be their savior (when you're not insulting them) - they DON'T WANT YOU.
