Lets rise to the challenge of keeping our opponents from using Common Core as a club to bash us with while severing the tentacles of the profiteers from simple higher level thinking skills. How dense can someone be to insist that Michael Mulgrew sold us down the river? he isn't above the law! 46 states adopted the common core. Yes NYC was one of them. But Commissioner King is his own puppet master! Not Mulgrew. I'm tired of hearing the wining from people with no real solutions! trust me, More isnt pushing back anyone. Actually it's quite amusing for More to always get part of something right and then the rest wrong. The UFT has made efforts to improve teacher status by making our profession more respectable. EXCUSE THE UFT for sticking up for its members to improve or profession! I for one do not want to be known as a lazy teacher or be in a fall back career when everything else doesn't work out! and as a parent, I want to know that teachers know how to do their jobs right because my kid only gets one chance to get it right each year. THANK YOU UFTAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15921757.post-79757810871572992112013-10-30T21:22:34.106-04:002013-10-30T21:22:34.106-04:00Once again we are mixing the common core debate wi...Once again we are mixing the common core debate with that of testing. I am a 10 year teacher. I believe that common core is not in of it's self a bad thing. But if the conversation is just throw it all out we will never have a nation wide set of standards. We need to keep the issues separate.
We also need to keep in mind the politics of where we are. Race to the top would not have been stopped if the UFT said no. It would however allowed the newspapers to once again run headlines that we are against money for children.
Furthermore Mulgrew often checks with his Parliamentarian at the request of opposition. The parliamentarian isn't saying he is in the wrong. This whole post seems to me to be at least in part sour grapes because you didn't get your way.wwoodruffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02904949630613568458noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15921757.post-14044238065952328012013-10-14T22:12:48.688-04:002013-10-14T22:12:48.688-04:00To anon above 7:41 The legislature only pass...To anon above 7:41 The legislature only passed the law because it was required to under Race to the Top, which was awarded from the Federal government. The union could have killed the Race to the Top application by not signing onto it. This creates a hostile school atmosphere. Then came the baseline tests. Teachers were crammed in a room waiting for guidelines and rubrics on how to grade them. They arrived 3 hours late. All teachers who were grading had to be covered for the day...and we weren't even half done! And that was for social studies. Then came the science baselines and the same thing happened. A week has gone by and hardly any classes have been graded. Once the guidelines and rubrics arrived, they were plopped in front of us and told to figure it out! With all of this grading, the students aren't learning. Yes, of course the students only scored
0's and 1's on the baselines...so what is the freakin' point of all of this nonsense? Danielson this, Danielson that, look to your left, look to your right! Are you freakin' kidding me?
The UFT has backstabbed its very members by signing on to this. What was Mulgrew thinking? Did he see the reception King got upstate, a man with a junk science powerpoint couldn't take what educators were telling him, so he cancels his tour. This guy is a real flake. We are being treated like units, not educators. His kids go to Montessori schools and don't take these tests. It's time for non-educators to keep their hands off education policy-making. In 20 years, I thought I had seen it all, but no, this crap is totally mindboggling. I want MORE to continue to pressure Mulgrew in wiping this out. Maybe if he held a legitimate delegate assembly, he would regain some respect, but this guy is out to lunch and Albany is paying the tab.
From Under The Busnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15921757.post-39819431047643237502013-10-13T09:05:44.941-04:002013-10-13T09:05:44.941-04:00As long as Mulgrew and the union leadership push t...As long as Mulgrew and the union leadership push the Common Core and new teacher evaluations as a good thing, consider them on stage, with King, in Poughkeepsie.Poguenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15921757.post-32906686408695409602013-10-13T07:17:31.086-04:002013-10-13T07:17:31.086-04:00There is no science.
