LEADER OF TWU SAYS DE BLASIO NOT PRO-UNION

John Samuelson is the leader of Transit Workers Local 100. He is quoted in an article in Labor Press talking about the mayor's support among labor unions.

The well-documented rift between Mayor Bill de Blasio and TWU Local 100, meanwhile, remains. On this week’s episode of LaborPress’ “Blue Collar Buzz,” Samuelsen challenges the notion that organized labor will automatically rally around hizzoner for a second term.

“I don’t see it,” the TWU Local 100 President says. “[The mayor] is not a trade union supporter.”

Of course the mayor does have some union support. His biggest cheerleader has been UFT President Michael Mulgrew.

Not that Mulgrew cares, but how does the UFT rank and file feel about Mayor Bill de Blasio? In my school, I don't hear too much that is positive. How about you? I know some of the alternatives are not that appealing but is anyone enthusiastic about the mayor?

  1. Does it really matter at this point? We have years left on a 9 year contract, obviously thins are only getting worse...

  2. Nobody really likes De Blasio, but it could be worse. We could still be dealing with Bloomberg. At least we have a 9-year contract. Once the contract ends it will probably be another nine or more years before the City & UFT settle another contract. If the charter school lady gets in as mayor the City is doomed, especially teachers.

  3. At least nothing. Your perspective is something is better than nothing. I disagree. That contract is the worst in labor history and should never have been presented to us. And since we agreed to a bunch of 1% raises, what do you think the terms will be next time. We set a new precedent. It used to average 3-4% per year. forget that. And now since we agreed to delay retro forever, the City will always hold that over our heads. Take the shitty contract now or take the shitty contract later and then wait an additional 7 year with no interest to get back pay. We have painted ourselves into a corner, we must take the initial, poor offer.

  4. Are there any current NYC/NYS political figures that really support or are pro-unions? Please name some-- who might run for mayor against DeBlasio in 2017 and have a real shot of winning.

  5. I don't think DeBlasio is a bad guy, I just think he is clueless an out of touch. The real evil person is Mulgrew. Mulgrew knew all about the evil DOE and all the legal teams and gotcha squads that they employ. Mulgrew should have met with DeBlasio right away and demand that he clean house at the DOE. That never happened and that is why we are still in the mess that we are in.

  6. I agree with 4:46. I do have to say that my life as an ATR is much worse under DeBlasio than it was under Bloomberg. The monthly rotation is worse, cell phones, restroom justice, diminished rights, same jerks in charge and same target on my back. I don't give a shit what happens to DeBlasio or Farina. I do hope Mulgrew gets arrested - he's the real problem.

    1. So true. Also, the teachers who keep voting Mulgrew back in.

  7. How many billions is this years budget surplus? Getting tired of hearing about budget surpluses and all the money being thrown at this initiative or that one and then how much is still left in surplus every year. Why did we have to wait so long for again? They both need to go.

  8. Diblasio has done nothing for education in NYC and his re tread chancellor is sleepwalking the job.

  9. No doubt this is the worst it has ever been. Even under Bloomberg, we had more rights. He never got around to eliminating them all, but, Cuomo and de Blady-blah swooped in and finished the job.

De Blasio is useless. He's done and shouldn't even run. He just doesn't make any sense. A party trolley? Look, I totally understand that the powers that be are doing a hit job on de Blaiso. But, he could survive it by being bold and thoughtful. Instead, he's wishy-washy, screws his friends (*us*) and has goofy ideas.

  10. liberals are liberals when giving an opinion on something that does not involve them. The minute it involves them, there are a thousand reasons why not to be liberal in this particular situation.
