The Independent Budget Office has issued their latest report on the city's finances and the city's surpluses are continuing as they have been since the city signed their pattern setting contract with the UFT giving city workers 10% total raises over 7 years.
UFT members also gave the city an interest free loan of two 4% raises from the last round of collective bargaining where we will not be paid back in full until 2020. Throw in healthcare savings and little, if any, working condition improvements and we are certainly owed a thank you from City Hall for helping them out
Here is some of what the IBO said:
Based on IBO’s analysis of tax revenues and spending as presented under the Mayor’s plan along with our own updated economic forecast, we estimate the city will end the current fiscal year with a surplus of $801 million, which is $362 million above the de Blasio Administration’s estimate. This surplus estimate does not include the $1.5 billion currently sitting in two reserves within the fiscal year 2017 budget—these reserves are counted as expenditures but do not currently support any specific spending needs.
Don't expect a thank you from the Mayor or any kind of early repayment of our loan to the city but instead look for a possible top-down early endorsement from the UFT for de Blasio's reelection.
Meanwhile, separate grand juries are investigating the Mayor and his aides over fundraising law violations and de Blasio has already been fined for violating NYC campaign fundraising rules.
I ask our readers: What has Bill de Blasio done to deserve our support?
As I said, stupid declining teacher quality...
ReplyDeleteAll the young newbie teachers at my school voted "yes" on the crappy last contract for 2 reasons: 1)They were naive and gullible to believe the Unity rep who came by our school saying the city was broke. 2) They all wanted the $1,000 signing bonus. These young, short minded, teachers are the root cause of many of worsening working condtions. Teachers need to look far ahead. But then again, how many of them are going to make it to retirement anyway? They are the same teachers that would probably have no problem giving their CAR away in exchange for paid maternity leave. (A deal that should never, ever, be considered by the way) Sickening times for sure.
ReplyDeleteMy school, we are teaching an "unconventional" 5 one hour periods. Young, naive staff agrees to do this...for free.
ReplyDeleteAnd if you're an ATR they give you the same program and you're expected to do it. If you don't you're called into the principals office and reprimanded. If you complain its insubordination and the ATR supervisor marks you forever. We have no union.
DeleteSimple fact is the majority of teachers in NYC were not around in 2005 when all of the nonsesne really started to take effect. They do not know what bumping is. They do not know about seniority based transfers. They do not know that we were once able to grieve a letter to file. They don't remember when the school day ended every day at 2:25. They don't remember that we used to get decent raises without working more time for it. They don't know that retro was always given up front. They don't know that EVERYBODY who wanted a parking permit recieved one. They were not around when administrators used to teach for 10-15 years before running a school. They can't define the term "tenure by estoppel". They can't recall the fact that we only used to get observed once or twice a year.
ReplyDeleteThat's the truth. It's the business model of staffing a fast food restaurant. Signed, sealed and delivered with UFT approval. Now the whole country will be run the same way.
DeleteI hate the UFT and will NOT pay dues when I no longer have to! I hate the UFT!
ReplyDeleteIt's time for Butch Weingarten and the Marshmallow Kid to ride off into the sunset.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to the day when I can quit the UFT. Not because I am not pro union, quite the contrary, it's because this is NO union. And when it finally dissolves, which may very likely happen, a REAL union may take it's place.
ReplyDeleteIt'll take another fifty years of fighting. All the people that suffered and sacrificed to create the UFT undone by Randi and son.
ReplyDeleteThe failed contract last delivered to the members is a disgrace, but what is even worse is the continual assault by administrators that members are faced with every day. For such a large percentage of teachers, these clowns take the joy out of teaching and learning. And through it all members have no sense at all that their union has their backs. The perception is that the UFT is a self serving entity that is mainly interested in siphoning 1% of members paychecks each month. This is why many will flee when the opportunity arrives.
ReplyDeleteWhat teachers who have worked in this system for 20 plus years don't understand is that the economy is horrible. These young newbies are facing far worse in the private sector. Really, get a grip, lifer. You are the one of touch.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the majority of comments. Comments are great. It is time for actions. Time for teachers to ignore the UFt and start organizing something else.
ReplyDeleteGo to all colleges/universities offering ED Masters - flyer this campus, explaining that they need to drop this as a major - create an absolute teacher shortage domestically.
We know DOE will hire out of the country - these teachers need to be treated like scabs once on the job as should be TFA and NYCTF.
Teachers should hold sit-ins/protests all day long against UFT borough offices - every POS who works for UNITY UFT should fear for their jobs. They should feel a tremendous amount of pressure. They should feel like the rank and file feels everyday. They should be harassed every time they come into a school. Teachers should go to UFT field offices as agitators and disrupt BS PD to bring attention to problems and lack of representation. Petitions, media time should be priority. Our primary goal should to embarrass and disenfranchise current "leadership" so that no one will talk to them until they start representing or step down.
