A FEW THOUGHTS ON YESTERDAY'S PROTEST MARCHES

I totally support yesterday's Women's March on DC as well as the many other marches around the country and the world.

ABC is talking about over a million protesters at these marches. That is nothing to sneeze at. Great job everyone. Protesting President Donald Trump in these numbers sends a powerful message. This is just the beginning.

That said, I am a bit perplexed about this UFT poster.

This UFT poster was published on the Raging Horse blog.

UFT and revolution? I have a hard time accepting the two together. Our union can't even get a good contract or decent evaluation system with two observations a year for most teachers.

Maybe I am too cynical about our union.

Enough with criticizing our union. I think they did the right thing by participating in the marches. In the end, I salute everyone who marched, including activists from Middle College High School, ICE and MORE.

As for the next four years, please check out the Perdido Street School blog. Reality Based Educator is prognosticating incompetence mixed with insanity. Hard to argue with that.

  1. When do we protest getting assaulted by students while principals sweep it under the rug?

  2. Despite the frustration of having to stand for hours amid a non-moving crowd,it was wonderful to be part such a huge, high-spirited mass of people, and doubly so to witness how Midtown East was shut down by our numbers.

One observation, though, which some might consider a quibble, but which I think is significant and still shows how far we need to go in order to effectively combat Trumpismo: minimal reference to workers' rights and unions.

I saw signs urging defense of almost every group except workers, who just happen to comprise the majority of the nation, no matter their race, gender or sexual identity, and whose tilting toward Trump in key states (Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin) gave him the election.

Until we can come up with languauge that includes workers and puts their interests first, we'll keep on losing.

  4. Gotta love the touching Madonna speech. Liberal elite at its best. But she still owes me a bj as she promised.

  5. I found many of the signs vulgar, lewd and low class. I was a little embarrassed to be there (NYC). It is ironic how upset I get when I think of how little Trump thinks of women, then I see these signs that demean women and make them objects.

  6. Silly lib marchers flaunting their white privilege. What is their complaint? Homelessness, hunger, mental and physical abuse? Nope. They feel bad that Trump won instead of Hillary.

  7. The march was bogus. Paid protesters are never very convincing. Led by certified lunatics like Ashley Judd and Madonna. This is what the UFT attaches itself to? I look forward to the day when I can dump this dopey union.

  8. Too many racist comments from people in charge of teaching the next generation.

  9. Yeah that's what the lefty lunatics do, whoever has a different political point of view is painted as a racist. Yawn......

    2. Call people racist to silence them! So true and nothing every changes for the people who desperately need real assistance not just a government handout

    3. The people who really need help don't know they need help😟 they are too high up in their glass house to realize they are part of the problem.

    2. If you clean out your ears @7:25pm, you could hear the calls of racist and ignorant more clearly. If you spout out what you type, I know you've heard both words. Try to pretend you are a part of a compassionate society for 20 minutes today.

    3. Glad your back. I almost began to miss your vast knowledge of perceived racism. Also glad you decided to put your big boy pants ( no racism intended) back on. Welcome back my friend and look forward to our continued conversation.

I thought to myself, "self if you leave who will help the righteous almighty Anonymous navigate through the dark trenches of his heart and mind?" Self answered, "no one "--so I decided to stay. I will chalk it up to charity. Oh yes and a few decent folks appreciated my wisdom.

    5. Thanks for helping with that.,as you know it can get really dark in the trenches. Thanks for the wisdom.

  14. Another day in the rockaways and we all know what that means. Not racist just the reality of the area. These kids deserve better. Drugs, violence, welfare, single parent homes, fake grades is not how they should live. They deserve better from themselves, the schools, the government and the parents.

    1. They sure do deserve better. All humans deserve better. Do you think Donnie and his posse will help the issue and MAGA?
I certainly hope so...let's give them a chance I mean what do they have to lose, they already live in hell

    2. Not sure if President Trump will help with the issue and MAGA but will give him a chance. The kids deserve better education system where they learn a marketable skill set, an improved job market where these skills can make them a livable wage and financial and personal security.

    3. At 4:42 Anonymous...you are bringing tears to my eyes. You see folks...when EVERYONE succeeds...America will truly be great. Less folks on the dole, less need for public housing, the crime rate will drop and the other anonymous will dance a jig with me. Many of the schools are horrible, many students are horrible, many administrators are horrible but we (the educators) berate the kids--the most vulnerable.

    4. No berating here just trying to find solutions

    5. I like solutions. When educators remain silent while the bullies in power refuse to allow us to teach the way we know best, we can become hardened to the job and students. How did we get here? Teaching isn't supposed to be painful.

  15. The UFT poster was not designed for this rally. It's old and from something else, what I have no idea. Exactly one person had this poster. There was no UFT poster for this rally. I noticed some people wearing buttons with Mulgrew's new support public schools message, but that was it.

  16. That poster does not work for anything the UFT is involved with unless it was from the 1960s. The logo was from Randi's time so it does not go back to sixties.
