Transport Workers Union Local 100 settled their contract right after it expired on January 15th. We have seen the details and in this age of concessionary unionism, there are no concessions that we can see. There are also two raises for NYC subway and bus workers that beat the current inflation rate. Here are the details from the Daily News:
The deal for the 28-month contract — arriving hours after the current contract expired Sunday night — includes two raises of 2.5% over the first 26 months, plus a $500 bonus for the final two months for 38,000 subway and bus workers, according to two sources.
Not being a member of this union, I have no standing to tell them how to vote. I will say that the salary increases come to a little over 2% a year which is not horrible. It also looks like there are no givebacks. The one concern is that the TWU extended the contract to 28 months so in the future the TWU contract will expire in May.
If there ever is another transit strike, it will not come in the dead of winter; it will be in the middle of spring, unless they wait for months after their contract expires to hit the streets. That has to be seen as a win for management.
The good news of this contract is now it is the new "pattern" contract that other union will follow. No givebacks and a raise that matches inflation. (Hey UFT, I thought you said the city was broke)
ReplyDeleteBy the time it comes to negotiate the next UFT contract Mikey will say the City is broke again. The City is using the money it saved through the UFT to give other unions the raises.
ReplyDeleteHorrible contract, Horrible Union, Horrible working conditions. Kids smoking weed, roaming the halls and getting fake grades. We need a change in our union that protects the rights of it's members and protects the educational integrity of our schools. The kuds deserve better
ReplyDeleteSorry folks but the Mulgrew bashing here is off. The last TWU contract only went through 2016. It was better than ours but our last two years are for 2.5% and 3%. Those are the two years TWU just got 2.5% and 2.5%. So in the end they are not that much different. TWU might still win out but I will do the math over the whole 9 years between UFT and TWU when I have time.
ReplyDeleteHold on. We are still waiting for 4 of the 8 percent in our salaries and we have only been paid about 10% of the retro, now going back 8 years. If you want to eliminate 2017 and 2018, why was 2010 and 2011 a double 0, and why was it 1 percent every year after?
ReplyDeleteValid points that are well taken. I am just talking raw percentages.
DeleteThey also get a $500 bonus later.
