Study and restoration of health sabbaticals are benefits the UFT has managed to retain through the Klein, Black, Walcott, Farina years except for one year when study sabbaticals were sacrificed to save us from layoffs. For teachers close to retirement, remember there is a two year service requirement after a year long sabbatical.
In all of the years I have been in the system, I never took a sabbatical. How about our readers?
Here is the information from the UFT Weekly Update for Chapter Leaders.
Deadline MARCH 17 to apply for a sabbatical leave
Eligible teachers who want to study to enhance their teaching skills have until Friday, March 17 to submit an application on SOLAS for a study sabbatical for the 2017–18 school year. March 24 is the deadline for a principal’s recommendation to the superintendent. Coursework must be rigorous and related to your teaching assignment. All teachers are eligible for a one-year study sabbatical after 14 years of service. Junior high or high school classroom teachers with seven years on the job can also apply for a six-month study sabbatical for the spring semester only. Teachers earn 70 percent of their salary during a full-year sabbatical and 60 percent of their salary during a six-month sabbatical. Members can read guidelines and eligibility requirements in the sabbatical memo on the DOE website.
took one
ReplyDeletecant wait to do it again
After being an ATR from a closing high school, I accepted a transfer into a school with a horrid, abusive principal who was out to U rate me (and anyone else over 35). What a mistake that was, but that is a story for another time. Suddenly found myself, after 20 years of nothing but rave assessments, in danger. So I took a six-month sabbatical to breathe, to assess, but mostly to find another job. It was wonderful for my self-esteem to be taking classes in a sabbatical program with other teachers some of whom were in the same situation, to be able to have heady educational philosophy discussions with others without the day-to-day pressures, to be able to run to any school at any time for an interview or to have the time to plan model teaching lessons. It was even more wonderful not to have to return after the sabbatical to that soul-sucking environment.
ReplyDeleteI took 2 full year sabbaticals - first for study and the 2nd after 28 years for what seems the now defunct "research" --no courses --- what a year. Remember the travel sabbaticals?
ReplyDeleteChaz, there are no more "research" sabbaticals? What if a prospective teacher wanted to write a book for teachers? That is a no-go? Second, have you heard of any teachers who took a sabbatical but were not placed back at their original school after the sabbatical is done?
ReplyDeleteYour job in your school is safe based on your seniority, even if you are on sabbatical. Someone mixed up Norm for Chaz. Interesting.
ReplyDeleteSorry about that! I am a big fan of both blogs. All good reporting in my eyes.
ReplyDeleteQUESTION: If a teacher gets a year long sabbatical, who covers the teacher's position while they are away? Does the principal hire someone for just one year and then they become an ATR? Or does DOE central provide an teacher for when the sabbatical teacher is away? Love to know the answer to this.
ReplyDeleteThe former.
ReplyDeleteStill waiting fr determination for Spring 2020 Sabbatical. Any idea when I should hear? Thank you
ReplyDeleteThey have to tell you shortly so you can sign up for classes.
