Tell
SED, Regents about YOUR experience with ELA testingWhether it was the paper/pencil exams or the computer-based tests, we've been flooded with troubling reports on the state's ELA tests. Now's the time to share your experiences with the SED Commissioner and the Regents. NYSUT has set up an email action center to contact them now.
Meanwhile, testing company Questar's problems continued this week, with reports of a cyberattack affecting student tests in seven states — including a small number in New York. NYSUT EVP DiBrango said New York State computer-based testing must stop until SED figures out what's going on. "Student data privacy must be protected," she said.
On the other hand, the UFT was silent on the testing in the weekly Chapter Leader Update. Michael Mulgrew did say they would present a resolution on computerized testing at the NYSUT Representative Assembly.
This is from Jonathan Halabi's notes of the President's Report from the Delegate Assembly posted at NYC Educator:
The state tests have started. “Untimed testing” has meant some kids are sitting forever. We are going to the Board of Regents with this one. Outside of the City there have been huge problems with computerized testing. We are having conversations with NYSUT – the State is doing it all wrong. We will ask for a statewide committee for guidelines before we start computerized testing (and the UFT delegation will propose this at the NYSUT Representative Assembly in Buffalo next week).
Just what we need: another committee on testing. Note that the UFT nowhere says that they oppose the state tests. The UFT just wants them implemented in a better way.
So called progressive NYC is now as far as I can tell the last stronghold in NYS, and maybe nationally too, of assess (I won't say test) and punish education with the full support of the UFT.
Remember also that teachers are rated on some assessment or another that was not designed to rate teachers. I ask again for people to spread the petition at the right of this blog to get student assessments out of teacher ratings and return it to the local districts. Here is the link to the petition which is slowly but surely building momentum. We are within striking distance of 1,000 signatures. Teachers have to know about it so we need everyone to get the word out. Hopefully, the testing issue and UFT support for tests will come up at the NYSUT RA next week.
Someone's gettin' somethin', and it ain't the rank and file.
ReplyDeleteThe rank and file is getting somethin' and it's called the shaft.
ReplyDeleteSill says no ATR buyout. Mulgrew says they arent even negotiating a contract yet. Still no discipline code. Contract violations all over. No hardship travel clause enforcement. Grade fraud all over. Sounds great....
ReplyDeleteJust remember to keep paying those dues.
DeleteCouldn't be better.
ReplyDeleteMulgrew wont start negotiating a contract until at least 3 years after expiration.

I’m convinced that Restorative Practices are the key to positive school communities and classroom culture
Really @kellimcharles..I think restorative practices is dangerous
DeleteYeah, you cant shine shit so just make up ways to let them get away with everything, make everything fraudulent and use those fake stats to show how well everyone is doing. How about asking why a high school student cant write a sentence in proper english?
ReplyDeleteSame here. I check Jupiter Grades for other classes, students missing 7 out of 7 assignments, yes, every single one, and is getting a 75. How do you fail?
ReplyDeleteHow much is the homework category worth? You’re answer could just be math.
ReplyDeleteWe have no choice. 5 buckets, 20% each. That isnt fraud? A student, many students miss every single assignment and still pass?
ReplyDelete"Restorative Justice"? This is a spearhead of "Social Justice" and is a sjw means of signaling virtue while blaming a certain privileged group for all the world's woes.
ReplyDeleteHow does it work? Check the Cultural Revolution in China, killing fields in Cambodia or the modern paradise of Venezuela.
Somebody’s watching too much Alex Jones.
ReplyDelete58 UFT members in my school have signed the petition. Approximately 15 additional signatures from friends/family of our staff. My school started with a handful of signatures. We still keep reminding people to sign...in person and in emails. It's easy to get angry with teachers who don't take the time to do it but it's just as easy to give them frequent reminders to do it so it actually gets done. At least 6 of the signatures from my school come from people who are not rated under Danielson/test scores. We asked them to sign as a show of support for those who are under it. Our delegate stood in the lobby one morning and handed out the info. Our CL held a union meeting where we talked it up. I've sent email updates on the number of signatures. People will step up----some just need nudging or nagging to get there. So let's all continue to nudge and nag. Roseanne McCosh
ReplyDeleteJust keep telling these kids that they are really smart, they can be Obama, as they do no work, they are in high school and cant write a sentence, have no ability to follow a simple rule, walk the halls all day, and have them demand you raise their grades. Then 10 years from now we will wonder why they are at minimum wage.
ReplyDeleteLet's not forget that in Obama's younger years when he lived abroad he would wake up extremely early and his mother would teach him English before their daily routines began. Kids are not waking up on time to arrive to school on time.
DeleteThe Sunday evening posts hit the nail on the head in regard to grade fraud. It's institutionalized now. Only 30% tests, this is how everyone passes as long as they can breathe.
ReplyDeleteIn regard to Jupiter (and the like), remember as per the "Contract Empowerment" flier, an online gradebook is optional. I keep a real gradebook, so someone looking up my Jupiter (which is a problem in itself, anyone in the building shouldn't be able to go through other classes' grades) isn't going to see the real picture.
Lastly, remember Mulgrew supported Common Core to the extent he wanted to punch its opponents in the face. Long Island and the rest of the State led the opposition to Common Core, led on Opt Out, etc. No surprise the UFT is behind the times in regard to the testing, which goes hand in hand with Common Core, data-driven BS, junk-science evaluation, etc.
Im listening to a conversation between 2 teachers as I write this..."All my kids are failing so im gonna curve it just like i did the last test." Oh ok, that makes sense. So they get a 30, make it a 70, wham, 97% grad rate. That of course is in addition to missing every assignment in jupiter, and of course the inability to write a sentence at 15-18 years old. just curve it. Ok, cool.
ReplyDeleteIf the students and parents are being duped by the fraudsters, then the students in the specialized schools are duping themselves by cheating to the top--either way we're screwed
ReplyDeleteThe 3020A is being manipulated, and a lot of teachers are being served the termination papers without a PEP vote. NYSUT lawyers need to step up to the plate.
