SCHOOL SAFETY MOVING FROM NYPD TO DOE; LAYOFFS UNRESOLVED AS OF NOW

Part of a the negotiations for a budget deal between the Mayor and City Council Speaker due on June 30 is to move school safety from NYPD back to the DOE.

This is from Politico New York:

The deal involves moving school safety agents, who are unarmed but wear police uniforms, into the Department of Education, canceling a July class of roughly 1,100 police recruits, and shifting certain homeless outreach operations away from police control.

In reality, moving school safety is a bookkeeping trick and not a cut to the NYPD. As for the predictable results, I want the broom contract as principals will be sweeping even more incidents under the rugs when students at some point return to school buildings.

The people who want the NYPD budget slashed by $1 billion aren't buying this either.

“Mayor de Blasio and Speaker [Corey] Johnson are using funny math and budget tricks to try to mislead New Yorkers into thinking that they plan to meet the movement's demands for at least $1B in direct cuts,” said Anthonine Pierre, a spokesperson for Communities United for Police Reform, who called for a full hiring freeze on NYPD officers. “This is a lie.”

On other aspects of the city budget including layoffs, we still do not have a final answer.

Back to Politico NY:

De Blasio said he was “disappointed” that the state Senate has so far refused to give the city permission to borrow up to $5 billion to help plug the gaps. The Assembly, he said, has been more amenable to the idea.

Without a federal bailout, borrowing authority, or a labor savings deal by October 1, the mayor says the city will have to lay off 22,000 workers.

“This is not the 1970s. I have not gotten a coherent answer as to why it’s just not the right thing to do,” de Blasio said of the borrowing plan. “Austerity is never the way to go.”

Mike Murphy, a spokesperson for Senate Majority leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, said de Blasio has failed to address “legitimate concerns held by our Senators.”

“We are not against a borrowing plan that makes sense, but remain concerned that the Mayor began asking for $7 billion, then dropped his request to $5 billion, all to close a $1.6 billion gap,” he said in a statement Monday. “Prudence requires the development of a plan not rushed through before action is actually necessary, especially when the possibility of additional federal aid remains unresolved.”

Never underestimate the incompetence.

  1. Based on the media coverage of COVID-19 this weekend, which state do you think recorded the most coronavirus deaths yesterday? Texas? Florida? California? Arizona?

No… it was New York. Again. I wrote more about the Acela Media’s bias in

  2. Sending out right wing propaganda now. Do you wish for some balance? Deaths are a very lagging indicator. This says where we were a couple of weeks ago in terms of new cases. NY flattened its curve and cases lowered considerably from where we were. Much of the rest of the US, a different curve.

As for the crime dystopia, the crime statistics were fudged on the way down and they are more than likely being fudged again on the way up. I am not arguing that there were not considerable crime reductions over the last 30 years but some were a little too much to be believed. Now that the NYPD is angry at the Mayor, suddenly crime is out of control.

Please read my brother's book, The Crime Numbers Game, for more details on why NYPD numbers should be taken with a grain of salt.

  3. Will do. However, if the grad rate can be manipulated why not crime stats. Defunding the police needs to be put on the ballot at a minimum. What the heck.

  5. From AP on Az

By early June, just a few weeks after restrictions were lifted, cases began spiking. Arizona has seen its cases go from 13,000 on May 15 to 74,500 on Monday, and deaths from the virus have nearly doubled in the last six weeks. More than 1,500 people have died.

  6. That's an excellent idea. We can all benefit from learning--IMO. Thank you!

  7. I suspect de Blasio's well-deserved reputation for idiocy may influence the city's ability to navigate this fiscal crisis.

At the same time (and on another topic), his progressive tendencies are pulling him to cut the police budget at the same time New Yorkers witnessed some awful looting and now a spike in shootings. Yes, that'll make him popular with BLM and their allies - - but that is about as far as it goes.

    1. How certain can anyone be that all "allies" of BLM are true allies. How certain can anyone be that everyone who believes that BLM also believes in defunding the police. The system is wrong and needs to be righted.

  8. No doubt California and Texas and other states are seeing a spike in positive tests and no doubt death is a lagging indicator BUT death has a tight correlation with who tests positive and not numbers who test positive.

  9. I don't wish COVID-19 on anyone. The new Republican talking point is that more younger people are getting infected so the death curve is not rising as fast. You right wingers will grasp at anything.

Pick a side and come out fighting. Everyone is dead or injured. Meanwhile the USA loses. 1% wins. Hey they sent you into the pool of cooties already and are mapping out the future. All yeah let's keep fighting for them too.

  12. Make America Smart Again? The extent of ignorance and anti-science, anti-knowledge sentiments in the U.S. is astounding. Between the president and his VP making mask-wearing a political issue, to the evangelicals who know enough to wear seat belts but trust God to spare them from covid crowded into rallies or at the local tavern, to the anti-vaccine knuckleheads, covid runs rampant. Who woulda thought?

We have 4 percent of the world's people but this first-world nation has over 25% of covid cases and deaths. American exceptionalism at its best.

  13. @920. Neither the right wing media (Fox News) nor the left wing media (CNN, MSNBC etc) is interested in telling us the truth. They just want to win. They both have talking points and engage in spin. We will all find out in November where the country stands re Left vs Right. But to think that main stream media ever tells us the truth is a fool's belief. It's not a right wing or a left wing issue. It's an issue for those of us who value truth whether it comes out of the mouth of a lefty or righty or anyone in between.

  22. Mom of slain Bronx hoopster Brandon Hendricks says gun violence has ‘shattered my heart’

The mother of a promising Bronx high-school basketball star bemoaned the street violence that took her son’s life and — said she can never forgive the unknown gunman who shot him dead.

“This person that takes my son’s life, I have no forgiveness for that person,” Eve Hendricks, 49, told The Post Tuesday. “I’ll never ever forgive that person as long as I live because that person took away my word. That person shattered my heart.”

“We always talked about gun violence, especially in our community,” she added. “And as much as we talk about black power and unity, but it’s like we’re killing each other and there is no one to step forward and say, ‘This is it.’ It just has to end one way or another.”

  23. 10:53, You make valid points.

Jen, I would gather crime is rising but I would not trust the numbers because the police are so angry. This is one way they fight back by scaring the public that crime is out of control. I was skeptical when crime was falling. I am just as skeptical now.

The way the Coronavirus is politicized is just a little much for me. Why did Pence mention how more younger people are becoming infected? Spin the lower death rate to mean things aren't so bad so go out and spend money. On the other side, people do the same thing. Cuomo gives a good presser so media will just ignore or gloss over what he did putting COVID-19 patients in nursing homes while shielding the nursing homes from liability.

Actually, I don't see much difference on economics between Republicans and centrist Democrats.

At least everyone knows where I am coming from as I don't hide it.

  24. As was pointed out repeatedly here in comments, violence was occurring in our cities before COVID-19.

  25. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS! Democrats and republicans want lessssss school shootings and violence. They could be pulling agents out of schools nd could be catastrophic. Look at NYC right now. Cops are scared to arrest anyone setting fireworks off. You think students in schools will be stopped?

Doesn't this just shift the expense to the DOE?

Cuomo please get rid of the incompetent mayor and send him back to Boston.

  29. Violence in America. Thank goodness for the people who refuse to just sit around and wait for change. If not for them, stuff would remain the same. People would get pleasure from just jawing on and on and on about how the blacks and minorities and "dem cities" are out of control. Out of control or not...change is a coming. It's coming and it will be GREAT. The USA will really be strong. Fear is raging now Some of you should maybe turn off the tv and go get some fresh air. Sit out in the backyard with a good book and a cold drink. Or watch a comedy.

Current Covid-19 cases among Florida long-term care residents jumped to 1,868, the most since the pandemic began.

That’s a one-day increase of 76 from a day earlier, according to a report released Tuesday by the Florida Department of Health. The numbers are up by 293 since Friday, when the state last published them. They include residents of assisted-living centers and nursing homes, who are among the most at risk of dying from the infection.

  38. From AP
Coronavirus first spread in the U.S. as a mostly coastal and big-city scourge, sparing many rural areas, small towns and even small cities. Translated into U.S. political geography: The virus hit Democratic areas first. But that has changed. An AP analysis of case data shows the virus has moved — and is spreading quickly — into Republican areas, a new path with broad potential political ramifications, report Bill Barrow, Kevin Vineys and Angelki Kastanis.
