We kind of figured the city's blended learning approach would be easily mocked. It doesn't please the crowd that says the COVID-19 pandemic is mostly behind us in NY so they want kids back in school buildings. Nor does it satisfy the people who think we all should basically stay home until there is a vaccine or remedy. Nobody likes the deBlasio half-baked approach.
Reopening school buildings is not comparable in NYC to Europe, Asia or anywhere really as our COVID-19 outbreak was worse here than most places in the world and our country's situation is still declining. Has any school system had the deaths of its workers like NYC had in March and April? Many Covid-19 fatalities of school personnel were most likely caused in part by school buildings staying open in NYC too long.
We are rightfully a bit apprehensive about returning to school buildings and sending our kids back. I don't know of too many who trust the Mayor, Chancellor to do this right or for the UFT to hold them accountable and ensure the safety of members and students.
I kind of think some of this Onion story on Dallas could still apply to NY. It positively applies to President Donald Trump who says to just open schools, pandemic or not.
DALLAS—Saying the city remained on track for progressing into the final stage, Mayor Eric Johnson told Dallas residents Friday that they would soon officially be entering Phase 4 of pretending the coronavirus was over. “Thanks to the efforts of municipal employees, I’m happy to say we’ve reached the final phases of completely deluding ourselves into thinking that this pandemic has somehow stopped spreading and that we’re safe,” said Johnson in a press conference, in which he applauded the city for bringing them to this stage by successfully disregarding the virus in previous phases.

ReplyDeleteTrump sidelines health advisers in growing rift over coronavirus response
President Trump’s tweet slamming advice from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on reopening schools is his latest clash with top health officials, who face intense pressure from an administration trying to play down coronavirus dangers in a bid to revive the economy. In a White House guided by the president’s instincts, rather than evidence-based policy, the CDC finds itself often forced to backtrack on pivotal decisions.
Trump has done a bad job for the last 6 months. I still can't vote for any democrat based on what they stand for.
ReplyDeleteWhat's a ouple of hundred thousand more dead people mean? Let's keep America great.
ReplyDeleteSupporting criminals and lowlife trash?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Joe. Those of us who reject the cancel culture/suppression of speech supported by the Democratic Party will never vote for a democrat no matter what Trump does or doesn't do. Those who disagree can stamp your feet and name call and say and do whatever you want. You will not change our minds. Looting, attacks on cops, setting fires, AOC calling for a boycott of Goya because company guy accepted an invitation to the White House even though the same guy accepted an invitation from Obama as well is just the latest example of the crazy left wanting complete control over what Americans can say and do. No f'n way I or anyone in my social circle will vote for democrats come November. Get your house cleaned, Democrats if you want us to come to your party.
ReplyDeleteThat's why there is an election. Vote your beliefs or for whomever you believe will do the least amount of harm or whatever. That's how I vote. Doesn't matter whether they are dem or rep. However Donny is playing president. He doesn't have a plan for Covid because like fairy dust it'll just disappear. He is on the Republican ticket but he's a new kind of Republican. Anyway he is demanding that you go back into the cesspool in September so that his pockets can stay fat. He said it at the beginning of his presidential run: "i can stand on 5th ave and shoot somebody and my people will still vote for me". He knows his market. Maybe dems have a significant amount of the black vote. It's no different from the Republicans having a significant number of white voters. IMO Black whites whatever both parties use the working class. They pit us against each other using race. Vote for who you like. It's the American way.
DeleteJoe Biden is not the far left.
ReplyDeleteHow many more have to die before the Maga's here wake up?
ReplyDeleteBut Joe Biden panders to the far left. As do all democrats. As to how many people have to die? I can ask the same. How many kids have to be shot in cities controlled by the left before you wake up?
ReplyDeleteBiden does not even favor defunding the police. He wrote the crime bill. Look at what his task forces just wrote, there is no pandering to far left. Turn off Fox News and think for yourself.
ReplyDeleteBiden is a centrist. His whole life has been as a moderate. He said nothing would fundamentally change if he was president. Relax my Republican friend. It will be alright.
ReplyDeleteBiden has changed since 1994. He is now leaning way left. I specifically wrote that trump has done a bad job the last 6 months. They endorse lockdown, except for anti cop protests. They endorse letting all criminals get out of jail immediately with no bail. I have not heard 1 word about black on black crime, shootings, death. I have not heard 1 word about single parent households. They want no guns, unless it is in the hands of a criminal, in which case we need crime reform.
ReplyDelete@Joe seems informed. Can you share any insight about Intraracial crime? Where specifically did you read that all criminals get out of jail immediately with no bail?
DeleteWho are the "they" who want criminals to have guns? Finally, some cops are criminals too. Those are the cops who give ALL good cops a bad name. The bad cops are worse than criminals. Why? The criminal is doing what a criminal does..breaks the law. Let's not pretend that your so-called "they" are the boogie man or woman. Hate and evil is all over the place but so is love and kindness. Hopefully the latter wins whether dem or rep. USA. USA. I want the USA to be its strongest and best. It will NEVER EVER get there divided or by trying to keep the status quo. That hasn't worked so time for something new.
15,498 murders in US this year. That is from FBI. 135,000 Coronavirus deaths. I am no math expert but you are 9 times more likely to be killed by COVID-19 than murdered in the USA.
ReplyDeleteCovid is bad, no question. 3rd time, i said trump did a bad job. Black lives are being ended daily by shootings all over the country, and it isn't by cops. This has been going on forever.
ReplyDeleteFox News talking points are bullshit. Read what the Biden Bernie unity task forces just came up with. It is nothing far or even left.Improve Obamacare, climate change goals by 2050. No medicare for all, no Green New Deal, etc. Biden is no lefty. Make a coherent argument please. I don't see where he is attacking the 2and Amendment except to have an assault weapons ban and to close loopholes to get universal background checks. I think about 90% of Americans support these positions.
ReplyDeleteYou are seeing dem leadership everyday. Mayor lightfoot was on with chris cuomo a few days ago, he brought up the "uptick" of shootings in chicago. Her answer? Segregation and racism.
ReplyDeleteHUH? Have they seriously condemned looting, rioting, destruction, threats, etc?
Biden wants more funding for the police by the way.
ReplyDeleteWhere is the Jewish lives matter mural? White lives matter? Blue lives matter?
ReplyDelete@10:40 am: It's America. Wjy aren't Jewish. Whites. Blue. Out there raising their voices? What makes you so angry about blacks speaking up about injustice? Would you prefer to keep the status quo? Do you want blacks to just %itch and moan amongst ourselves and hope something changes? Trust me when I say just as the Civil Rights act benefited all people, so will this. Speak up if you are tired of being treated as if you don't matter. In March both your employer and union allowed you to walk into danger. I continuously read about your anger and rage (rightfully so). Why aren't you out there protesting for your rights? Teachers lives matter. I haven't seen any marchers or even newspaper articles or anything. Nope. You're angry that black folks are taking action because we are treated differently. I've experienced it. It's not fake or political. What's the problem? It's America. Jewish. White. Blue. Asian. Hispanic. Biracial. Gay. Straight. Other. Doesn't matter. There's enough room for you to join a protest. Look at the rainbow of protesters. Not all protesters are doing the right thing but isn't that in every organization? Some folks just don't do the right thing but you shouldn't blame All. That's what I heard. Anywho November will be here soon enough. Either Donny or Joe will be elected.
DeleteHow come the increase in crime comes from one part of society, havent we all been locked down?
ReplyDeleteTrying more to divide us. Biden is at least trying to unite the country.
ReplyDeleteBy allowing criminals to run wild?
ReplyDeleteTrump is trying to kill us by saying don't wear masks and holding MAGA rallies and speeches where people do not social distance.
ReplyDeletePainting Biden as a far left puppet won't work. Try the corruption angle. MSM will suppress it but that is your best hope. Biden is a swamp creature. The racial thing is a dead end too. Trump has the angry white vote already but he is losing the elderly there too because seniors don't want to die from COVID-19. They see the complete stupidity of opening up states too soon. You can't even blame blue state governors for Florida, Texas and Arizona spikes in COVID-19 cases and now deaths too.
ReplyDeleteWe agree, trump has made bad choices. I still cant endorse letting criminals freely run the streets. I also cant handle the anti white and anti cop garbage. Al sharpton had no trouble painting with de blasio yesterday but hasnt said a word about the black man shot to death while walking with his 6 year old daughter a few miles away. Too many double standards.
ReplyDeleteGo to a meeting to apologize for your whiteness?
Nothing wrong with being white. It is a complete accident of birth. I agree with you on black on black crime. There is silence when it occurs because it does not fit a political agenda.
DeleteThe death rate from covid death rate is still 15 times as high in ny vs florida.
ReplyDeleteSo Cuomo and de Blasio fucked this up too. We agree. Now try bringing in a fact or two on Biden. He is not for defunding the police. He is a centrist through and through. He will have to fight the left in his party if elected.
ReplyDeleteWhy hasn't he denounced anything?
ReplyDelete@11:09 am: Maybe he is waiting for Dunce I mean Donny to denounce QAnon. Or Breitbart or Bannon. Has he done so. I'm waiting for him to do so and maybe I will vote for him.
DeleteLet's see Biden has about 90% of the Black vote by sitting in his basement. When your opponent is destroying himself every time he opens his mouth or tweets more bullshit, the smart thing to do at that point is to keep your mouth shut and let Trump keep fucking up.
ReplyDeleteTrump is beyond ignorant. He reminds me of Archie Bunker. His own niece. Former staffers. Hey he can't keep staff. However he does know his market: The Fearful. He strokes it. As we get closer to election he will trot out: they want to rape our women. They want to kill your children. They want to take your jobs. Hey just google 1950s and 1960s southern politician speeches. You will find his play book. The big bad black man is coming to get you but elect me I will protect you from my fortress. However, You can't come into my fortress. You are too poor and not like me and my kind. You are the working class.
DeleteEvery dem gets 90% plus black vote.
ReplyDeleteFrom Politico:
ReplyDeleteSupport for President Donald Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic has hit an all-time low, according to a new survey, with a similarly substantial majority of Americans also disapproving of his response to widespread racial unrest.
An ABC News/Ipsos poll released Friday reports that a record 67 percent of respondents now disapprove of “the way Donald Trump is handling the response to the coronavirus,” while only 33 percent approve — the widest gulf in public sentiment since ABC News and Ipsos began surveying on the pandemic in March.
Joe and anonymous who have been arging: Please come out of the bunker. It will be okay when Biden is elected.
I know Joe you said three times that Trump hasn't been doing too well handling this the last six months. I am explaining why Biden just needs to keep his mouth shut to win.
ReplyDeleteNot defending trump. Just anti dem platform and belief system.
ReplyDeleteI question the intelligence of the black vote when they keep electing de blasio, Durkin, lightfoot...
ReplyDelete@11:26am: do you also question the white vote?
DeleteI thought police aren't needed. "Now starting tonight, you’re going to see a combination of things happening … increased NYPD presence at hotspots at key locations more patrol officers on foot in vehicles, but also more community presence because that is the key to this community leaders committee organizations walking with police officers showing common cause,” the mayor added.
ReplyDeleteThis blog has never said to defund the police. I have mentioned numerous times how my brother is a retired NYPD captain and now a professor at Molloy College. I respect his views on policing. They should not be defunded nor should school safety be sent back to DOE.
ReplyDelete@ James: I agree. I have too many friends and family who are NYPD. Defunding is ridiculous. Removing school safety to DOE is a joke.
DeleteIt looks like some minds are not open or willing to come to the table and hash out a better Everything so that we all can live together.
The dems have said it, repeatedly.

ReplyDeleteThere have been 38 murders over the last 28 days, twice as much as the same period last year, according to NYPD stats as of up to June 14. So far this year, there have been 159 murders, which is 25% higher than last year, the stats show.
This year's murder count is on par with New York's murder total five years ago and is well below the elevated murder totals of the decades before that, NYPD data shows.
Shooting incidents in 2020 are also up, with 394 happening to date, a 24% increase from the 317 shooting incidents at this point last year.
There's a growing call to defund the police. Here's what it means
There's a growing call to defund the police. Here's what it means
"The uptick in violence, I haven't seen anything this bad in a long time," said a law enforcement official. "This is the worst I've seen it in six or seven years."
The uptick in murders is tied to gang and drug activity, with drug dealers fighting over territory, another law enforcement official said.
This week's crime stats were released as New York's criminal justice system adjusts to three seismic changes: the coronavirus pandemic, the effects of the state's bail reform law, and the mass protests opposed to police brutality and racism against black people spurred by the killing of George Floyd.
In addition, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea announced a "seismic shift" in its culture Monday by disbanding its plainclothes anti-crime team and reassigning those 600 officers to other roles.
"What we always struggle with, I believe, as police executives, is not keeping crime down. It's keeping crime down and keeping the community with us, and I think those two things, at times, have been at odds," Shea said.
The coronavirus pandemic and its mass unemployment has hammered state and local tax revenue and is likely to lead to layoffs and spending cuts to New York City's budget. Combined with protesters' calls to "defund the police," the NYPD could see significant decreases in its budget in the coming year.
Last week, Mayor Bill de Blasio said he plans to move some funding from the NYPD to youth and social services.
A group of city council members has proposed to cut $1 billion from the NYPD's nearly $6 billion budget. The mayor's press secretary says de Blasio "does not believe a $1 billion cut is the way to maintain safety."
And on Tuesday, de Blasio announced a new policy requiring all body camera footage of incidents to be released in 30 days if a police firearm is discharged or if an officer's Taser or use of force causes death or great bodily harm.

ReplyDeleteSTATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A recidivist offender who was arrested three times in less than two weeks, for allegedly stealing a credit card he used for a shopping spree, evading police during a high-speed chase and smashing an MTA bus window, was released without bail on two of the three occasions after criminal justice reforms went into effect on Jan. 1.
25-year-old Emeka Aduba’s streak of arrests began after he allegedly stole a credit card on Nov. 27 from the center console of a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee in Mariners Harbor before going on a shopping excursion at Jimmy Jazz inside of the Staten Island Mall, according to a criminal complaint.
“I went to a car,'' Aduba allegedly told police after he was arrested on Dec. 28. "I needed money and I saw credit cards and weed and so I took the stuff and shopped at Jimmy Jazz.”
He was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and two counts of petit larceny and fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.
A District Attorney spokesman said bail would have been requested if the new bail reform laws did not go into effect at the start of the new year.
Just over a week later, authorities allege that Aduba swiped a white BMW 650i, which he used to recklessly speed down a one-way residential street in Grymes Hill on Jan. 7.
Police allegedly clocked Aduba driving 90 mph in a 25-mph-zone before running a red light at the corner of Van Duzer Street and Hillside Avenue.
When officers turned on their sirens in an effort to stop Aduba, he fled down Van Duzer Street and ran another red light as he passed Vanderbilt Avenue, the criminal complaint alleges.
Authorities say that Aduba then continued fleeing officers by jumping onto the Staten Island Expressway and weaving in-and-out of other cars while traveling approximately 90 mph before he lost control of the stolen BMW and slammed into the guardrail of the Expressway.

In an interview with Noticias Telemundo, reporter José Díaz-Balart noted the recent increases in COVID-19 infections in the U.S. and asked Trump if the country was “losing the war” against the virus.
“We are winning the war. We have areas that flamed up and they’re going to be fine over a period of time,” the president responded, according to a transcript from Telemundo.
“It flared up in areas where they thought it was ending, and that would be Florida, Texas, a couple of other places,” Trump later added of the virus. “They’re going to have it under control very quickly.”
Meanwhile, the U.S. continues to lead the world in coronavirus cases and deaths, with more than 3.1 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 and over 133,000 dead from the virus in the country so far. Recently, the U.S. has repeatedly set new global records for the highest number of reported coronavirus cases per day, hitting over 59,800 daily cases on Thursday.

ReplyDeleteOnce-mocked ‘Never Trump’ movement emerges as a campaign force
The “Never Trump” rebellion that began four years ago as a largely ineffective cadre of appalled Republicans has transformed into a potentially disruptive entity in this year’s presidential race.
The movement seeks to build a national political operation to oust both the president and his supporters in Congress, with a particular emphasis on persuading white suburban voters who consider themselves true Republicans to break from the president.
Anyone who relies on any POTUS for health or medical directives should consider taking more responsibility for his or her own life. Anyone who thinks we would be better off now, regarding CoVid, under Obama or Hillary Clinton is misguided. Obama and Hillary Clinton admittedly had little regard for human life, as their support of abortion clearly indicates.
ReplyDeleteAs a teacher, I really don't care what Trump says about the public schools. I would like to read less about Trump and more about our local politicians and what they are doing or not doing.
We are the laughingstock of the world and some of these ridiculous comments make this the laughingstock of the teacher union blog boards. I see how MAGAs operate. Just ignore reality and create an alternate world in which COVID-19 doesn't really mean much.
ReplyDeleteI think Obama or Clinton would have handled this better.
ReplyDeleteSoon after McConnell made his playbook comment, Ronald Klain, the White House Ebola response coordinator from October 2014 to February 2015, tweeted out a link to a document titled “Playbook for Early Response to High-Consequence Emerging Infectious Disease Threats and Biological Incidents.”

The document, originally unearthed in March by Politico, is a 69-page National Security Council guidebook developed in 2016 with the goal of assisting leaders “in coordinating a complex U.S. Government response to a high-consequence emerging disease threat anywhere in the world.” It outlined questions to ask, who should be asked to get the answers and what key decisions should be made.
Nicole Lurie, another Obama administration official, confirmed to us the existence of the NSC pandemic playbook and also said similar documents were created for the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and
Lurie said there were tabletop exercises, which included planning for a pandemic-like situation, during the transition between the Obama and Trump administrations. (The Trump administration also conducted an exercise — known as “Crimson Contagion” — in 2019.)
“They were extensively briefed, to the extent that they paid attention to these things during the transition,” said Jeremy Konyndyk, who directed USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance.
“We absolutely did leave a plan. It was called a playbook,” said Lisa Monaco, former homeland security adviser to President Obama. The goal, she said, was to share the lessons learned during the Ebola and Zika outbreaks.
Meanwhile, Peter Loge, who served as a senior adviser within Obama’s Food and Drug Administration, told KHN he remembered a very clear message from the HHS secretary regarding the presidential transition.
“Our job was to set up the Trump political staff for success, and we took that mandate very seriously,” said Loge. He and his colleagues wrote memos to inform the Trump staff about priority issues. “But nobody called me and asked what I was doing in my job,” said Loge.
Obama's people were ignored by Trump. Facts don't matter to MAGAS. They would rather another four years of this shit show.
ReplyDeletePresident Hillary Clinton announces that every case of COVID-19 has now been traced to its source

This is, sadly enough, not a news story. Instead, it’s a tale of speculative fiction. However, it’s not “high fantasy.” There are no elves or dragons to be found, and the setting isn’t in some mythical land. Neither is it science fiction, because it doesn’t call for any technology or discovery not all in evidence. It’s more a story out of alternative history—alternative present, really—with a focus on what could have been.
This is a grand “what if” of a United States that isn’t trailing the globe in its response to the COVID-19 crisis. A United States that hasn’t racked up a disproportionate, and still growing, portion of the world’s deaths. A United States that hasn’t treated a pandemic as an “opportunity” to punish states that elected Democratic governors, and Black communities, and immigrants. A United States that hasn’t come to live with scorn for science, medicine, expertise of all types, and plain old common sense. It’s an image of what could have been. With images.
Back in mid-May, The New York Times looked at the success of women leaders in dealing with the COVID-19 crisis. Whether it was Angela Merkel in Germany running up a far lower death rate than neighbors in France or Italy; 34-year-old Prime Minster Sanna Marin in Finland whose all-women-led coalition came up with a plan leading to just 6% of the deaths in Sweden; President Tsai Ing-wen leading Taiwan through a plan so successful that the total number of deaths for the whole event to date is 7; or all-star Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern of New Zealand, who was proclaimed the most effective leader on Earth in uniting her country to completely eradicate the disease there. Women: They got the job done.
As of Monday, New Zealand had 23 cases of COVID-19, all of them being carefully monitored in isolation. The United States had 1,620,520, and states were waving the white flag on even attempting to conduct contact tracing or case management. While these women-led nations show the world that dedicated leadership on testing, contact tracing, case management, social distancing, and protective measures can successfully reduce the death rate and contain the disease, the United States has become the poster child for how to do every possible thing absolutely wrong.
Jim Jones had the same kind of hold on his believers? Constituents? People? I don't want to disrespect those who believe in him. I just wish he had a better hold on how to be an authentic leader for everyone. First do no harm while a medical oath it is applicable for the office of the president. This is what we call a ---t show. Oh dios mio.
