CSA NO CONFIDENCE VOTE IN CARRANZA AND DE BLASIO

The Council of Supervisors and Administrators had an emergency Executive Board meeting today. No, they did not call for fully remote learning for NYC. No, they did not say they would not show up for work on Tuesday. They did unanimously vote no confidence in Chancellor Carranza and Mayor de Blasio. CSA calls on the State Education Department to enter the school reopening process in NYC.

This is from CSA Facebook:

CSA Calls On Mayor de Blasio and Chancellor Carranza to Seek Intervention from the State Education Department

On September 27, 2020, the Executive Board of the Council of School Supervisors and Administrators, representing over 6,400 New York City’s school leaders, declared a unanimous vote of “No Confidence” for Mayor de Blasio and Chancellor Carranza due to their failure to lead New York City through the safe and successful reopening of schools. CSA calls on Mayor de Blasio to cede mayoral control of the Department of Education for the remainder of this health crisis and for Mayor de Blasio and Chancellor Carranza to seek the immediate intervention of the New York State Education Department.

“School leaders want school buildings reopened and have been tirelessly planning to welcome back students since the end of last school year,” said CSA President Mark Cannizzaro. “They must now look staff, parents, and children in the eye and say that they have done all they can to provide a safe and quality educational experience, but given the limited resources provided them, this is becoming increasingly difficult. During this health crisis, school leaders have lost trust and faith in Mayor de Blasio and Chancellor Carranza to support them in their immense efforts and provide them with the guidance and staffing they need. Quite simply, we believe the City and DOE need help from the State Education Department, and we hope that the mayor soon realizes why this is necessary.”

Reaction on Twitter from NY1's Jillian Jorgensen:

Principals union president Mark Cannizzaro says his members will be at schools Tuesday -- so parents, re-opening is on.

    1. I'm tired of the criticism of teachers on here. I'd love for the union to take a stronger stand. I would have supported a strike. But the reason people have unions is so they can take collective action . Expecting individual teachers to go rogue during a pandemic, when people have spouses out of work and kids to support, etc., isn't very realistic or fair. I don't want to work in unsafe conditions but I, and many other teachers, can't risk our jobs right now.

  6. This mess cannot possibly be a surprise to anyone; not to principals, teachers, or parents.

The incompetence of the Mayors and the DOE central admins has been overlooked for so long. Anyone involved in education, from principals, teachers, school staff, parents to children are reaping what Bloomberg and DeBlasio have sown.

  7. TWO POINTS: 1) The mayor does not give two shits about the no confidence vote. 2) The UFT looks like a big idiot right about now.

  10. 315 agreed. The idiots are so proud of this deabcle, union proud. Keep paying dues. Uft leadership is laughung at all teachers right now, as they are nice and safe. Which buildings are mulgrew, hinds, amy, sill, leroy, sterling going to be in, sitting in crowded rooms, for 6 hours and 50 minutes...?

  11. Idiots are the people on this blog that think that the Union negotiateswith themselves.
CSA’s vote of no confidence is a political statement. They are upset with the UFT-DOE agreement concerning remote work because they did not wanted all UFT members to report to school unless they have a medical accommodation.
They thought they successfully stopped this when they leaked the UFT’s possible original remote proposal and it appeared on this blog.
Notice there is no CSA strike vote or threat.

  12. UFT remains silent. Expect for janella tweeting about blm. I hope the rank and file is content. Don't forget to come on here and complain about "why does my 10/15 check have $200 in dues taken for no reason?" What a bunch of bozos.

  13. As fool hearty these plans are and the never ending last minute changes that are so confusing and frustrating have to be even more so for the kids we care about. I know I’m speaking for the majority of us when I say we went into this career for the kids we teach. Definitely not for the money or the respect. To that point when we go in it’s not because we’re dumb or because we’re sheep. It’s because we have an enormous responsibility for our children. For the children I agree wholeheartedly that we should be full remote. For safety and because short of full in person, full remote makes more sense pedagogically than this horrible blended hybrid “plan”. Regardless, as we’ve proved, no matter how crazy the plan we step up and make it work to the best of our ability. We will never get credit for it but that’s not why we’re here. Our kids see us everyday not the idiots “in charge”. They may or may not know what we’re facing as we try our best to deliver the best possible instruction that we can in these crazy times but they will know if we just refuse to show up. Think of the harm we will do if they come to school and we’re not there. What will they think of us. I don’t care what the media say or the politicians say but I don’t want my kids thinking I’ve abandoned them when they are in dire need of some familiarity and consistency. If that desire to go in despite all the crap to be there for my kids makes me a sheep then a sheep I am. The saddest part is that the powers that be know that. They know we’ll continue to be the ducks on the pond. Calm and cool on the surface but frantically paddle below the water just to stay afloat. They don’t need to see that. They need calm and reassuring teachers that’ll always be there for them. We can keep protesting and pushing for full remote. We can keep up the pressure but if they open we gotta be there. Not for the DOE. Not for the politicians or the media. For our kids.

That includes masking up, wiping down, washing hands and be ready to report anything that puts you, the students and your family in danger. You have a cellphone? Record. Take pics. Send Emails. I'm praying for the safety of each of you. Thanks for your post. It made my day!

    then what?
do you realize how long it would take for a new / better union to be formed, get members and be taken seriously politically?

It isn't safe. Don't go in.

  20. Mulgrew said in an article in the Gothamist that he is confident there will be enough teachers by the time we reopen. Also, I agree, the mayor is going to care less about a no confidence vote. We do the same for principals and still the principals get to keep their jobs.

  31. When teachers call other teachers “idiots” and “sheep,” I automatically just stop listening. There are other ways to have civil discussions. I for one, will be teaching in-person Thursday. Hopefully. A year of remote will be bad. 1/2 the kids don’t even turn their cameras on. These kids will really be almost a year behind in everything. How long do schools remain closed? 1 year? 2? 3? Who’s to say the vaccine will be here soon and also be safe? Schools must open. Many teachers in my school that want to go remote are still going to the beach, out to dinner, out to bday parties, bbqs, etc...hypocrites.
I honestly also think that because the school system is such a mess (out of control schools, crappy and unfair observations, little to no support, long commutes, etc...) that many teachers (not all) are using this as an excuse to avoid the real reason for not wanting to go in.

  37. To the handful of people here who say don't pay dues, I wonder if the 3 of you ever had a really job outside of the UFT, not your paper route or your hs supermarket job,,, a real salaried job where you had to actually negotiate your salary, your health benefits, your vacation time with a boss. Most teachers I have spoken to have never had to to do this and have no concept of working in a job with this responsibility. Some teachers would do just fine and others would be fired in a NY minute. We need Ideas on how to put pressure on Mulgrew and end the corrupt Unity chapter. I support paying dues and fighting for a better union. Over 20,000 teachers on a medical accommodation... never would have happened without a union. Paychecks, health insurance, salary steps, pension, 3 months off a year, go outside, leave Mommy's basement, and talk to someone outside your FOX news bubble.

All of a sudden the CSA realizes what the teachers have known for years, that DeBlasio and Carranza are incompetent? Could the CSA really have been that ignorant to the stupidity of DeBlasio and Carranza? I don't think so. I think the CSA has been playing lying and corruption game with the DOE for years and only now are they feeling the brunt of the ridiculousness.

The best way to avoid dying from the coronavirus remains to avoid getting it, and experience has shown that the simple measures advocated by public health officials work.

  81. I absolutely do not feel bad for principals. They can be very cruel to staff.

  82. @7:56 AM - You are absolutely right!

  83. 5:21: I'm with you. They get no sympathy from me. You wanted the job, you get the stress that goes with it. Most principals go into administration for the wrong reasons: 1. It's a way to get more money instead of waiting to reach 20 years as a teacher. 2. It's a way out of the classroom for the most part. 3. No more observations.

  84. YOU GUYS CRACK ME UP! MULGREW HATERS? NO LIVE STREAMING FOR ANY TEACHER ENTIRE YEAR! NO CAMERA. HOW YOU LIKE DEM APPLES?

  85. What the fuck are you talking about 8:46? No live streaming does not mean no cameras. It means you don't have to stream your teaching live from your in person class to kids at home.

  86. @ 9:10 what anon 8:46 is saying is that teachers are not required to live stream. If you read the agreement you cannot even have an SBO on this matter. There's no live streaming. There's no synchronous learning. The camera doesn't matter. Teacher's do not have to ever go live. Do you understand that? Do you know how huge that is?

  87. Read the definition of live streaming in the FAQs from UFT. You can be mandated to be live.

What is the difference between live instruction and live streaming?

Live instruction (or synchronous instruction) for remote teachers can be defined as some live interaction between the teacher and students, each day at a scheduled time, at the discretion of the teacher via platforms like Zoom or Google Meet, etc. Live streaming, on the other hand, refers to a teacher broadcasting in-person instruction in order to share lessons simultaneously with remote students via video. Teachers cannot be mandated to live stream by any supervisor and it cannot be included in any SBO process.

In rare circumstances, remote teachers can be asked to teach remotely to in-person students. While this is not ideal, it may be the only option if, for example, there is only one physics teacher and she or he has a medical accommodation.

  88. If you are an "in person" teacher, you do not have to LIVE STREAM. Period!

  89. Can someone please clarify the last few comments please. Do in person teachers have to go live? Cannot get a straight answer from anyone. I actually believe no one really knows.

  90. In person teachers do not have to teach live and remote students at the same time.

  91. If you are teaching both remote and hybrid, the remote classes need to have live instruction, not the ones on hybrid.
