ANOTHER TWEET OF INADEQUATE HEAT IN A NYC SCHOOL BUILDING

We reported on school buildings that are too cold to teach and learn in yesterday. We find it very difficult to understand why the teachers and students don't leave instead of just tweeting. Here is another tweet from a school and Councilman Mark Treyger's reply:

We will again emphasize that you have a contractual and legal right to adequate heating and ventilation. Exercise your rights, please. Tweet if you like but if it's too cold, go home; you might already be sick. What are you waiting for?

Contract Article 10E1

E. Safe Environment

1. In recognition of the importance of employee safety and health, the Board agrees to provide the appropriate recognized standards of workplace sanitation, cleanliness, light, and noise control, adequate heating and ventilation. The Board of Education agrees to eliminate recognized hazards that are likely to cause serious physical harm.

If you tell your supervisors it is too cold (OSHA says 68-76 degrees) and you will work from home but they tell you that you have to stay, show them this that we have printed and reprinted:

-If any insane administrator questions someone, I consulted the UFT Chapter Leader Handbook about self-help. Self-help is when an employee is insubordinate by defying an order from a supervisor. Normally, a teacher should obey an order that violates the Contract and then grieve.  However, the Handbook provides three justifications for an employee to be insubordinate. Two of them apply to our current situation:

First, the employee has a reasonable belief that carrying out the order will endanger the employee's health.

Second, carrying out the order will threaten the safety of others.

Please be brave. You are protecting your health and the well-being of the students too. Bring in a thermometer and take a picture of the temperature.

I have heard zero from the UFT on this issue. I gather they are working behind the scenes but the DOE bureaucracy is slow. The UFT doesn't have the spine, as usual, to tell its members to just work from home if it is documented that it is too cold in a building.

We so need a real union.

  2. James...

I had a scheduled prelim pension consult today; when I called the UFT the "consultant" said the UFT is not giving estimated $ amounts at the preliminary PC, but he can discuss my other benefits; neither will the UFT email the usual benefit printout to me.

I cant retire until I get a number. Where are my union dues going? Has anyone else heard this garbage?

  3. Great idea. Keep writing the same thing then do nothing abut it. Walk the fuck pout. Invite the NY Post to your school. Let them ask the principal why the kids are freezing.

  4. Why are teachers such accommodating fools? Because it’s been drilled into our heads from day one - “Never lose your temper. Never curse back. Someone has to be the adult in the room. Do you think the UFT will fight for you. No one cares about anything but their paycheck and that’s what you should focus on. Would you like some per session? Then play the game like everyone else and never, ever complain to me about anything.”
I heard those statements over and over again even while the UFT was still a viable union. Imagine how it is now. - Jim Mills

  10. How would you handle this, Mr. Chancellor?

Mr. Mulgrew-Is this what you instruct teachers to do? Pass students under any circumstances? Why am I the only one who can give an honest grade? Where is the UFT directive on grading?

There is a no-show, yet he is passing every class but mine. How is that possible? What should I do? Is this how we achieved the best graduation rate ever? Are we teaching students that they can do nothing and still succeed? How will that work when they are hired to do something? Shall I stop with the live instruction since it obviously means nothing? Students clearly don't have to attend and can still pass. What happened to the value of face to face instruction everyday?

    ReplyDelete
  11. A follow-up on that no-show passing classes. He has shown up to my class 1 day so far, yet on the school offcial attendance it says he has 24 days presnt and 7 days absent, 77% present. Passing every class except mine including getting an 88 in English.

Anon2323 spewing lies, whining about what he finds offensive, and pretending "he who shall not be named" does not have a wall of protection from his enablers and co-conspirators in the Senate and Judicial Branch. To keep it on topic, notice that there are some professional whiners who rail about how unethical it is to pass a student who perhaps doesn't deserve it, but may have technology issues, or other challenges navigating this system that most would agree is broken Yet they'll condone, celebrate, and enable the blatant lying, cheating, and stealing and suppressing of the vote. THAT is ethical and ok with them. If the shoe fits.

    ReplyDelete
  15. There have been reports all morning in PA and GA, in huge Trump districts, voting machines are broken and they are sending people home. There has also been Biden stuff posted on the wall at voting sites which is illegal, as well as people handing out things to people on line, saying to vote for biden, which is illegal..

  16. James closed the comments for a reason. Tom, weren’t you the one bitching about rude commenters hijacking posts? And here you are doing just that.

  17. James I think we can all agree on one thing there is no more trust in this union, they have been exposed, it is really pathetic that we have this weak of a union. It's a broken record when you have leadership like dimoron, carranza, Mulgrew, and cuomo it is extremely hard to have success and make changes that are common sense that protects and uplifts DOE teachers.

    @ 1:44 exactly right

lol yes Tom I am spewing lies you can't handle.

@ Waiting you could not be any more wrong on your assessment, I have an incredible relationship with my students, especially my former ones. I know exactly how to get the best and most of my PE students and athletes. I have accomplished things like winning psal tennis chips hasn't been done for a bronx school in 30 years, coach of the year at my school plenty times as a white coach. Besides whining on this blog not sure what you have contributed to this crowded world.

Maybe the teacher, or YOU, just wants to use that number as a "wink, wink". You do know that number is used as a hate symbol?

  34. 4:50. You just show because you are getting paid. Far be it from me to defend doe/ deblasio, but the non attendance thing is a STATE policy. It’s in writing state ed regulation. If the student does the work you have to grade it.

  38. Wrong 8:43 it IS state policy. There was a state supreme court case. You can't fail a student for non-attendance. If you fail kids for not showing, you better hope the parents aren't savvy enough to know any better.

    ReplyDelete
  39. anyone with a half brain could see what is going on...if you look at transcripts of all nyc kids you will see a transcript filled with passing grades some bigger then others with high numbers. 80s 90s 70s 80s for lower end kids...its all great looking until you click on exams....regents exams show most kids not passing any regents and were talking 11th grade and even 12 grade. How can students have stellar transcripts yet not pass a single regents exam. MY question is how the heck are kids graduating in nyc i just dont get it

    ReplyDelete
  40. Nah, grade is by the teacher. If i make a grading policy, student isn't there, I don't even grade the work. Let them sue me.

    ReplyDelete
  42. 10:30 I don’t know where you teach but where I teach we use Skedula and the percentages are pre populated into the system. Grading policy is not made by individual teacher. And again you are breaking STATE LAW by giving grades like that. You are lucky parents in nyc don’t pay attention or as 6:56 says you would be in a world of hurt. Forget suing you they would bring you up on charges and you could lose your job.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I used class participation as part of the grade and was never questioned let alone fired for it.

    ReplyDelete
  44. OK, I will bring parents up on charges of negligence for allowing students to be truant. The students, at 19 years old, can prove if they can write a sentence. I specifically made my class participation grade high so s no show couldn't pass. I grade fairly. Let them try to fire me. I made up my own grading policy. So, you mean pass everybody? OK, let Mr. Carranza or NYSED tell me that.

    ReplyDelete
  45. 555, what attendance% allows students to pass your class? 0? 25? Your grades are fraudulent.

    ReplyDelete
  46. James—I never said class participation can’t be part of your grading policy. But you can’t fail a student for lack of class participation or attendance.

6:59. I didn’t say pass everybody. That being said, if they do the work from class, based on doe policy and state policy they are supposed to pass. You work for someone. They are telling you to do something. It’s called a job.

    ReplyDelete
  47. You are telling the students they have to do something to pass and violating city and state policy. Really good example. Lol

    ReplyDelete
  48. How many kids who NEVER show up complete any work of any quality? If they don’t complete any assignments or the assignments are terrible, then they don’t pass cause they do not show mastery. Isn’t that the deciding factor showing mastery?

    %40 classwork

  52. OK, so 0 for class participation and classwork. Not there, not interacting. That leaves them with 40.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Right, 9:52, see how easy. No work in class=no passing grade.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I can't see why failing a kid is such an issue. A student doesn't do the work, he/she fails, end of discussion. These teachers especially the young ones make it harder on all of us when they pass kids for doing nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  55. The issue is a student never attending class but making up the work.

    ReplyDelete
  56. @10:17 pm...

Please stop making sense or the wights may emerge. Shhhhh

    ReplyDelete
  57. The can't fail a student due to absences has been around for as long as I remember, but I rarely had a student who didn't attend and still did the work, so there still shouldn't be all this grade inflation.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I'm remote, they do the work from home, I intentionally made simple assignments, they can easily do the work within 1 day for the whole term at any time. I will never accept that if not attending class.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I teach remotely and had parents tell me they as well as their children were drowning in work and needed support and were feeling stressed out. Some had technology issues, no wifi, and no assignments in and works was building up. I posted to the stream to work on their missing assignments letting them and parents know I was available for questions and support throughout the day and proceeded to have my day entail texting, checking on assignments, confirming and responding to submissions, and sharing my screen as needed to walk them through platforms. At the end of the day admin emailed me that upon trying to observe my session they saw I had cancelled classes and wanted an explanation. They asked why I had not taken a day if I would not be doing live sessions and I explained my reasoning and that I did not take a day off because I was still going to be working in another manner to assist my students and their families. My admin never responded, I reached out to my principal who would not speak to me until tomorrow and I am on the verge of a nervous breakdown. I have a two month old that I have had laying on my lap out of view while I teach, and a 21 month old, as well as an 8 year old who is also remote. I try to understand that parents have other children at home and tried to make this situation less stressful for them and allow them an opportunity to breathe easy which has resulted in me feeling that I have done something wrong. I am lost on if going live is even mandatory that they would question me about my whereabouts online, I'm debating on if I should take a leave, I am not given any directives and there is no communication and I like my parents, am drowning. I can deal w work stress from parents and teaching, but the stress from admin is pulling me further under and I am struggling with how to get back above water.

    ReplyDelete
  60. As far as teaching remotely goes, I've about given up. I'm at about 12% attendance overall. Some periods I get 0 or 1 or 2. They won'tput cam on. I have no idea if they logged in and walked away. I talk, nobody responds. I just sit there talking for 25 minutes. Why bother? I think it is video everyday time. Obviously, nobody else cares, why should I?

    ReplyDelete
  61. 1031, I would find a new job, teaching is a waste. If you can, get out. They will chew you up and spit you out.

    ReplyDelete
  62. 9:38 PM, you said this...

    %20 class participation
    %40 classwork
    %40 tests

If they aren't there, they lose 60%. Can't pass. Those ae your numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  63. 2:35. Let me break it down for you because you obviously work ina school with mostly eager kids. The marking period goes by, the end of it comes, the kid shows up to take the test for one day, and then hands in all the assignments the last day before the extra seven days after the marking period is over. The test score even if it’s not great along with the assignments which we can’t take points off for, usually add up to a 65. (Sometimes 70 or 75). The kids get the assignments from a classmate that got a good grade so how do you mark it down? Anyway I am not even defending this system I think it ridiculous. I am just explaining state and city refs to you and reality. If you don’t wan to see reality I can’t help you. Keep wearing those rose colored glasses.

    ReplyDelete
  64. You are all missing the point. The class work doesn’t have to be die. In class. The student is allowed to make it up. And 8:25 I have had many students do exactly that.

    ReplyDelete
  65. 10:17 do you even read these comments. I said the students DID the work.

    ReplyDelete
  66. 333 and 338, No, I work in an awful school, I fail them if not in class. So you are saying you pass no shows if they hand in work. I think that's pathetic. Students cannot get the 60% if they are no there. I don't care if they "do the work" or not. On my guideline that I will not accept late work. They were given notice and warned. Plus, the mayor and chancellirsaid students must have live instruction daily. Students are choosing to ignore that directive. I will not pass no shows, 20%, 50% attendance. Will not do it. Many in my school do pass no shows, for the record.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Example...

A student has child so she can't do the work, she can't complete the work, she can't show up to class. Is that my fault she got pregnant as a teen?
If she worked at McDonalds and didnt show up because of her child, would she get paid?

We are teaching students they can do whatver and get away with it.

Even if the studnet ha a lefit issue, it doesnt mean they get credit for nothing. If I was in medical schooland my mpother dies they wouldnt tell me they felt sorry for me and give me an unearned degree.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Big problem is these newbies that pass everyone to kiss the admin's ass and to get tenure. It's only the established ones that still follow the rules, but if you do fail a lot kids, you may be banished to the ATR pool like I was.

    ReplyDelete
  69. 3:53. Remote learning all work is posted. If the student takes the test, gets a 70 let’s say for arguments sake, and does all the classwork at a 90 level, what do you give the kid? AGAIN STATE POLICY IS THAT YOU CANNOT FAIL A KID DUE TO LACK OF ATTENDANCE. it’s not my policy. I don’t agree with it. But I work for someone. (The doe). They set a policy. I have to follow it whether I like it or not. I don’t like a lot of the things the doe says as policy. But it my JOB. when you work somewhere you may not like everything you have to do or are told to do. It’s called being a grown up.

    ReplyDelete
  70. 1224 AM...So if they get a 90 on every assignment and no show. 0 plus 90 is 90 divided by 2 is 45. Also, I found a work around to posted work, you post a blank assignment in Google and tell the students in class what the assignment is, that way, those absent can't do it. I am not failing due to attendance, it 8s because they are missing the important discussion and interaction. This is as per my grading policy.alao, I repeated sent messages every which way informing students that they cant just do the work, they must attend the live instruction. As previously stated, mayor and chancellor demanded every student be in front of a live teacher daily. I am listening to my bosses. If you allow students to pass without ever showing up, you aren't a very good teacher. I cant wait to see those students no show work and expect to get paid.

    ReplyDelete
  71. no, the students need to grow up. I am doing my job, students aren't doing theirs. I dont do fraud.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Not fraud. My grades are based on what the students accomplish and my schools grading policy. And the state regulations. You don’t like the state regs lobby to get a new governor/representatives.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Oh, so a student who cant write a sentence at the end of high school satisfies what standard?

    ReplyDelete
  74. My question is if they had these common core standards in place for the past 10 years, why are the students still coming to high school years below where they should be?

    ReplyDelete
  75. I can’t answer that 10:19. All I can tell you is if my students do the work at a satisfactory level they are going to pass.

    ReplyDelete
  76. So you will pass no shows. I wont.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I can post 2 plus 2 in google classroom and no shows can do that satisfactorily but I won't do that because it is fraud.

    ReplyDelete
  78. You have no idea how easy or hard my assignments are and it doesn’t matter anyway because they get in from a kid who has already done it.
