Our friend DOENUTS put in a Freedom of Information request with the Department of Education for the COVID-19 statistics for the NYC schools. He received numbers for February and March. COVID-19 was all over the school system in February and early March when we were being told by the DOE and UFT to go into the school buildings. This list is not inclusive as it has been documented that COVID-19 was in Brooklyn Tech and Flushing High School. My guess is there were others that are not on the list below. The schools listed are the ones that followed the rules and filed a report in the Online Occurance Report System.
DOE's culture of secrecy and the UFT's major concern being the loss of dues, not protecting members, had deadly consequences since the DOE did not tell staff and students not to enter buildings and the UFT did not urge its members to leave. 75 school-based employees and 12 school safety agents lost their lives to COVID-19.
In my humble opinion, the main reason multiple tragedies did not repeat themselves in the fall is that many buildings were mostly empty as the vast majority of students and plenty of staff members never set foot in a school building and many other students went in a few times and never returned. To be fair, the reporting has improved in the fall but I still don't trust the DOE-UFT and neither should you. COVID-19 was in the generally empty schools in the fall and many buildings closed temporarily. The DOE is interested in appearances and the UFT showed when they were most needed that they are more worried about protecting their dues than your lives. We need a union against this kind of employer but not this leadership.
Nobody should have to go back now until there is a widely available effective vaccine and no community spread of COVID.
To read this list, the N08 Medical means that an Online Occurance Report System (OORS) was entered for a positive COVID-19 case.
Sorry about the size. At any other size, it was hard to see the name of the school.
Pay dues everybody.
ReplyDeleteOk, so now what?
ReplyDeleteLet me tell you what happened to me.
I live in Staten Island. I work in Manhattan. I went in every day on a bus, train and ferry. No mask. No nothing. Students shaking my hand, playing basketball in the gym, lifting weights, breathing heavy. March 19, the last day we had to go in, remember, the week we went in for no reason...I started vomiting, vision got blurred. I thought I was dead. Lost 10 pounds in 2 days. You think anybody gives a damn about me? You think they would blink if i would've died. And nothing changes. September, October, November, still have people going into empty buildings, traveling through a very dense NYC on public transportation. I wonder when somebody will do something. The answer is never.
How is this not theft of service for the uft?
How is this not unsafe or deadly working conditions?
Intentionally lying to staff?
Breach of service or conduct?
You're suggesting that no one goes back until there is a readily available vaccine, however, some are stuck between a rock and a hard place. I've implied my discomfort with being there before shutdown and I was told that refusing consent to testing and staying home would take days out of my bank. Then suddenly my admin began eyeballing me and nitpicking everything I do because its my tenure year. I can't help but feel as though they're backing me into a corner, trying to instill this fear in me to not disobey them or I'll be screwed over. I know - sounds crazy but not unbelievable! Mulgrew vaguely claims that tenure cannot be affected due to Covid but I don't believe that.
ReplyDeleteIf I was tenured I would have never set foot into the building to start the year.
Untenured teachers got a free ride this year and last. As long as you pass everyone, you'll get tenure. That's what they care about.
ReplyDeleteI hope everyone completed the doe online trauma training. I fast forwarded to the end of each video. Then I just put anything. Money well spent.
ReplyDeleteWow, theft of service...good point.we should get a dues refund.if parents give DeBLASE or CARAMBA votes of no confidence, how do teachers do this for MULLDOO?
ReplyDeleteAs mulgrew pushes schools open...
ReplyDeleteAs he is safe...
Latest daily case total for NYC is 2,331...highest since May 2.
United Airlines begins charter flights for Pfizer COVID vaccine: WSJ
ReplyDeleteYou dummies might actually have to work soon.
9:41, As soon as it’s safe to go back, almost everyone will be laid off. Mulgrew will say, “here we go again, we fight, that’s what we do” , and then he’ll turn off the camera, agree to anything that deBlasio asks, and then lay down on the shag in his office and take a nap.
ReplyDelete1041,
ReplyDeleteWe all get a free ride. Pass everyone, dress neat, play the game, don’t take off or question admin and smile when kids curse at you and you get a pension. If I cared about the job, it would be tough, but the doe beats that out of you.
And yes, I gave up on trying to do a good job my second year and my whole life got better mentally and physically.
Judge away........
@941
ReplyDeleteSame for the medical exceptions if there is a vaccine.
SI Councilman Joe Borelli bragged how he had 11 people over for Thanksgiving flouting the governor's request. I'm sure he wouldn't be so bold if Covid had affected his family personally. Stupid idiot. This is how much you love your family.
ReplyDeleteThis guy named Michael Johnson opened a facebook post saying how wonderful the uft is. Teachers started saying the opposite. What do you think this wonderful Michael Johnson did?
ReplyDeleteHe turned off comments. Well, sounds great. So much for free speech and fairness.
I social distance. I wear a mask. I skipped Thanksgiving with family and will do the same for Christmas because I have an underlying condition. What I won’t do is condemn anyone for making different choices. When the media and politicians like Cuomo constantly scream and flail demanding I do as they say, I fully understand why people refuse to comply. When Gavin Newsome and Pelosi and Feinstein and Chris Cuomo and the mayor of Houston and others lecture like Big Brother and then get caught not following their own directives or excuse only protesters whose cause they believe in,when they violate Covid protocols, I give my full support to Americans who refuse to comply. My family had the usual 20+ Thanksgiving dinner minus me. I stayed home by choice not because corrupt gov Cuomo mandated it. Maybe if Cuomo would shut his facist mouth, more New Yorkers would listen to reason. The more demanding he gets, the less New Yorkers will listen. We’re Americans, stop ordering us around. We don’t care what politicians and media personalities say anymore. Your credibility is shot. You’re having the opposite effect you want, you fucking hacks. My opinion.
ReplyDeleteOkay so who suffers, the politicians or the people when millions flout the rules? We do when the virus spreads as do the medical people who get overwhelmed. At least in Britain Dominic Cummings was forced out as Boris Johnson's advisor when he didn't follow COVID-19 rules.
ReplyDeleteWe should all be compelled to live under the same restrictions but the answer is to vote people out, not to put more people at risk by having 20 people over for Thanksgiving. You are saying in effect, "I am an American; I have a right to spread a deadly virus."
I say the same for protestors and people out celebrating Trump's defeat too. Stay home if it isn't necessary to go out.
What I'm basically saying is people who choose safety over liberty deserve neither. What people should do and what the government should be able to mandate they do are not the same. People shouldn't have unsafe sex or drink to excess or have mass protests on top of each other either. But I don't want my government stomping on our rights. You put safety first. I put liberty first. Because of that we will never agree. So what is one to do? You vote for people who agree with you and I vote for those who oppose mandates and lockdowns. People who fear the virus should stay away from crowds. The rest should be allowed to live their lives. As they see fit.
ReplyDelete9:17 -
ReplyDeleteLiberty to smoke in restaurants then?
Does the freedom of that person affect the health of others? Yes.
So what would we do without a government mandate?
Restaurants would choose to be smoker-friendly or smoke-free.
Their customers would then decide. Supply and Demand would balance.
The problem with COVID is that it can spread asymptomaticly. While you can see someone smoking and avoid the toxic air, with COVID you can't. A seemingly healthy co-worker or student can be spreading the virus to others. That individual goes about "living their lives", but then come Thanksgiving spreads it to others without knowing.
Why do you think we have Wedding and Party Super-Spreaders?
7:03: And it's this attitude that is causing it to spread in the US and causing all these deaths. Other countries do lockdowns the second, they hear there is a case and that is why some countries with populations similar to ours have so fewer cases and deaths. In China, the government asks its people to do something, they comply. Asking people to not have more to stay home during Thanksgiving is not fascist. Is liberty more important than life itself? You would be singing a different tune if you lost someone in your family.
ReplyDeleteChina also puts millions of people in prison camps. Should we do that also?
ReplyDeletePeople in China listen because if they don’t it won’t go well for them. When the virus hit wuhan they went in and sealed people inside their houses. Would that be preferable?
ReplyDeleteWe already put more people in prison than any other nation in the world. They also eliminated transmission because people stayed indoors and were given all the necessities to maintain (food, toiletries, etc.). So yes, that would be preferable.
ReplyDeleteWow. Not really sure how to answer that. You would prefer to live in a totalitarian state. So in prison most of the people are there because they broke laws. The Uyghurs did nothing wrong and their are a million of them in detention camps. I would rather die of the coronavirus than be bolted into my house by the government.
ReplyDeleteUyghurs have a history of terrorism in China. The Chinese use education and reform to prevent more terrorism. What does the US do? Hmmmmmm.....
ReplyDeleteAnd, again, the Chinese have eliminated transmission of the virus. The US is still debating the effectiveness of masks. They have schools open and society running as normal again. We can't stick to a single policy.. open this, close that. We should be taking lessons from the Chinese to improve our conditions instead of using scary words (totalitarian!) to damn them for their success.
Lol. The difference is you believe China that the coronavirus is out of their country. I don’t. They have every reason to lie about it. They won’t even admit it came from China! They blame the us military. And should we copy their idea of addressing “terrorism”? So we should gather up all suspected terrorists from areas they usually come from and put them in re-education camps by the millions? Yeah sounds good. By the way one persons terrorists is another’s freedom fighter. I’m sure you could have found many British officials in 1775 or 1776 that would have called Paul revere, Sam Adams, etc terrorists.
ReplyDeleteRecent news story by cnn. China lied about how many deaths they had from coronavirus early on. Big surprise.
