The insanity just gets more out of control. This is from the NYC Educator Executive Board minutes. This except is on President Michael Mulgrew's President's Report:
Mulgrew--About 42K (tests) per week is 20%. Can they get to every school? 9% citywide is number where everything shuts down. Will depend on behavior. Vaccine push--NY state will not mandate vaccination. Will run aggressive ed. campaign. AFT and NEA want teachers in cohort 1B so we can have access.
I am not sure if the 5% in individual zip codes still gets those buildings within the area closed.
In the question period:
% Covid for citywide shutdown--Now based on area. We will get in fight with mayor. State number is 9. That's for complete shutdown. Business community wants things open. Spread is troubling. CA just went into major lockdown. You will see constant closures. We will close schools every day. We closed 400 with monthly. Weekly will be more. State will have new round of orange and red zones.
% of Covid for zip code--School shuts down with 2 non linked cases.
From a school:
And another on twitter:
How many more have to become infected before this stops? I am no scientist but it seems obvious to this layman that having more people congregate in a building can lead to a greater spread of an airborne virus.
I didn't get the picture below from someone inside a school sneaking out a photo. This is on NYC's twitter. Am I missing something? Even though the picture is from behind, it looks like the kids are not wearing masks. Also, I wonder what the temperature is in those schools. OSHA mandates 68°.
Mulgrew said zero tolerance. No school entry without the consent form. Were students being turned away who didn't have the consent form on testing signed by a parent?
Finally tonight, we do have parental support that we all should be grateful for. An ICEUFT shout out to Naomi Pena.
I'm glad this is a pro union blog, if it wasn't, you might suggest a revolt or mass opt out. I mean, the uft is willing to have us die.
ReplyDeleteIf the opt out was organized as a pro-union dues strike where people stood with each other and formed a mutual aid group, I could see it having some possibilities. That's not how the people here envision it in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteMutual aid? Huh? Just opt out. What is the question? That will show them we are serious.
ReplyDeleteYou can't opt out until June 9:42. Individual opt outs accomplish nothing. I get the frustrations but I don't want to keep going round in circles arguing the same fight with every posting.
DeleteTHIS is EXACTLY right - it defies logic.
ReplyDeleteUNLESS the logic is, fuck it, who cares if some teachers die, we need the cheap childcare opened.
Replying to @MarkLevineNYC and @Cheryl_Smith1
Restaurants are closing but schools, with kids who are spreaders, are having unmasked kids eat in small airless classrooms. It defies logic. @NYGovCuomo @LilytheTeacher @rweingarten We are NOT testing kids. There is NO data proving schools are safe @NYBATs
Yeah, can we fuck around longer and think about opting out, as if we don't have enough reason...
ReplyDeleteCOVID test came back positive. Appears to a be a COVID-induced stroke. Still a ton of ?’s. They just threw my mom out of the room saying “code blue” but apparently he has stabilized. This is insane. To all the MFers saying “this is just the flu” it’s about to kill my healthy dad
Those little kids can't have masks on, they are eating, there is food on the desks. I guess that is double bad, right? UFT did a great job, right?
ReplyDeleteFunny how the Mayor and Chancellor listen to the parents when it's convenient for them. Usually parents have little input.
ReplyDeleteThe same mindset that fixed that teacher evaluations as 50% of exam results at work here.
ReplyDeleteThe flip to 9% is capricious and arbitrary, it was pulled out of Cuomo's ass, and it is not based on science.
They tested in my school today. It was not random. How do you test in a school with 16 students present. What a joke
ReplyDeleteThe public’s realization that the kids and staff are safe at school (yes, during a pandemic) means we are in for an anti-union backlash. If we are seen as the ones closing the schools and shortchanging the (especially black and Hispanic) kids. Let’s embrace the science rather than fight it .
ReplyDeleteAn overwhelming majority of the public are keeping their kids home 7:30. It is a vocal minority that is getting what it wants at the expense of everyone else.
ReplyDeleteArticle in the Times today saying they are concerned so many Black and Hispanics kids are staying remote. This close everything policy is being pushed (correctly IMHO) by the Democratic leadership and party of NYC and State. So the White kids and their families are wrong while doing what Mulgrew and deBlasio are pushing, because Black and Hispanic families are disregarding deBlasio, Cuomo and Mulgrew? I’m seriously contemplating becoming a registered Republican, in large part because of the three stooges Cuomo, deBlasio and Mulgrew. Not that Biden seems to be using any common sense, he is completely owned by lobbyists and everything spouted by progressives is being disregarded by him. No national Covid mandates, a lobbyist as health Secretary, a continuation of many of Obama’s mistakes and identity politics that makes race and gender the primary factors for positions in his administration.
ReplyDeleteYou really think the Republicans are any better? Look at Trump holding that rally in Georgia just to give himself an ego boost. Almost nobody was wearing a mask. Also, I think a lot of this second wave was caused by his many rallies.
ReplyDeleteBecause blacks and hispanics did so well Pre Pandemic?
ReplyDeleteThis is a student from Fall 2019-PRE PANDEMIC
ReplyDeleteNot my student at the time, which would explain the fraud grades.
Now he expects me to do the same and give him a free ride.
This is his term attendance for Fall 2019. He passed every single class. Grades from 65 to 80. Can any of you find a way to justify this? I know, attendance doesn't count. This is going to be a doctor or lawyer, right? Can you request to see the work he completed in every class, since he never attended, to show mastery. I think NYC would love to see it. There are many other examples just like this. 9% in English. Just wow.
Eng 7 9%
Eng 8 10%
US His 47%
Gov 57%
Geometry 32%
PE 48%
Earth Sci 1 70%
Earth Sci 2 61%
Mayor just said health in our schools is the gold standard, nothing to worry about, literally safest place to be in NYC. His words, not mine.

Working for the DOE means keeping windows open in the classroom in 32 degree weather for ventilation, Weather app says 32, but the real feel is 23 degrees
ReplyDelete@NYCMayor
ReplyDelete@UFT
@DOEChancellor
4th graders want to know if y’all are working in places that are this cold.
@MOREcaucusUFT
Maybe try closing the windows. Windows weren't open at Mass this morning and haven't been open any Sunday in weeks.
ReplyDelete10:11, I don’t want to get too off topic, as I respect this non-canceling blog and it’s comments. The opening of schools goes against Democratic policies for political expediency. I don’t think Trump is to blame for every ill in society and yeah I think the Republicans are marginally better. Yeah, and I know he’s narcissist, a buffoon and a clown. Problem is the whole Democratic Party is just like him. Classifying people is an overwhelming imperative with the Democratic Party. I’m not buying into their identity politics that claim I’m an evil colonist because I’m a white, middle aged man or that I should be a frightened, accommodating and shamed target for it. I never considered myself White until I started getting constant abuse for it when deBlasio took over. It’s going to get worse for white folks in the DOE and all city agencies especially when the cuts roll in, unless you become like Biden, Mulgrew and Cuomo and completely cater to people based on race which may mean falling on your own sword, not that they would do that, of course.
ReplyDeleteQuit and move out of NYC like I am as soon as the vaccine is in my arm.
ReplyDeleteI must be doing well, mike sill blocked my emails, his doe email address is not found. Nice job, uft.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why anyone would go to work in a room that is 32 degrees.
ReplyDeleteThey are not a dedicated, caring teacher.
They are irresponsible , foolish and submissive to a dysfunctional employer.
They are teaching the children to be irresponsible and foolish by their poor example.
ReplyDelete3% to 9% hahahaha, they are clueless, absolutely run by leaders with brains of a first grader. Nearly 10% is major jump. If there were 1000 m&m's in a bowl and 1 of them had the virus, I am certain many would not grab a handful of them and throw in your mouth. Issue is grandparents, I have 87 and 88 and I know I will be fine when I see them if they get it, probably going to end badly.
@10:11 maddow nut job, that comment about wave and his rallies is a joke, how about the milliosn celebrating in streets after "election."
The uft is having an online pension consultation right now, because in person would be unsafe. Get it?
ReplyDeleteThe sad part is I have to pass people who show up remotely and do nothing because that is the best I have.
ReplyDeleteCan someone explain to me how my blue ribbon school of excellence, the Brooklyn Institute of liberal arts, has an average SAT score of 915? Sounds like grade fraud.
ReplyDeleteWe need an early retirement ASAP! I recall reading another post in October that mentioned something was pending. It’s December. I hope I did not miss the open period to apply. This situation is only going to get more insane and if I can get out I will.
ReplyDeleteSo students dont have to attend? Don't have to turn camera on? Can't have due dates enforced? And we are preparing them for what?
ReplyDeleteLol. Students dont even log into remote, with the school paid for vomouter. "In addition, as an overall educational strategy, the NYC Department of Education (DOE) employs what is called Culturally Responsive-Sustained Education (CR-SE). CR-SE's main tenants require schools to “be aware of past and present forms of bias and oppression” and use curricula that “honor and reflect students’ diversity” and “connect learning to students’ lives and identities”. According to the department’s website , “Numerous studies across the country show that CR-SE increases student participation, attendance, grade point averages, graduation rates, civic engagement, self-image, and critical thinking skills.”
ReplyDelete4:36: Thank God for the SATs or we would never know if kids are really as capable as their report cards show they are. I've seen lots of students with 90 + averages who had average or below average SAT scores. There's something to be said about standardized testing when you have a culture of grade fraud.
ReplyDeleteSchool open for us, but...Gov. Andrew Cuomo plans to cancel all in-person press conferences going forward https://trib.al/RPvupCk
ReplyDeleteAs for the early retirement incentive, the NY state government 2021 session convenes in early January. Maybe we will hear something soon after that. My guess is that if an offer is even made it would be for the end of the year. Fingers crossed.
ReplyDelete4:36
ReplyDeleteEarly Retirement Incentive would have to pass the NYState Legislature. If it happens it'll be in the Spring. Keep fingers crossed.
E R I !! E R I !!
The NY Post needs to speak to teachers. Their latest editorial claims deBlasio bends for the UFT. The Post definitely reads this blog James; they take many of the comments and twist them using the same words and some of the same unique phrasing by some of your more notable commenters.

@JoeBiden
Today, I'm announcing key COVID-19 priorities for the first 100 days of my administration:
- Everyone wears a mask
- 100 million vaccinations
- Reopen the majority of schools
With these steps, we can change the course of the disease and change life in America for the better.
I'm confused. Trump wanted schools open. I thought we wanted schools closed. Now Randi endorses Biden wanting school open?

With proper funding and strong public health measures, it's reasonable to open schools and I'm so glad that we have a President-elect who understands that
As we walk through dirty infested streets, people wearing no masks, people dying, stores closing down, we all no what light will still be on. Our schools. They will keep us safe because nobody else will. Milldew wont care when we are on ventlators. He has your back. He will be by your side with one hand on shoulder and the other hand in your wallet getting one last union dues as you struggle with your last breath. It gets better. Dumboo and his corrupt wife will be in the tropics with the eight million she misplaced. Everywhere can shut down but we magically stay open. Its time to get real folks. We need to send that asshole leader a message.
ReplyDeleteCuomo, no more in person briefings. Decision made due to new CDC Guidelines for indoor activities. (NY Post@6:15pm)
ReplyDeleteVirtual call in's on M, W and Th )
SAFE for ME but not for THEE!
What is going on here Mr. Mulgrew? Not Acceptable!
How is it too risky for "in person" pension consultations and Cuomo's briefings but not too risky for members and children we serve inside buildings?
We all know every plan has flaws, we give warnings and violations continue, staff sucks it up, with a prayer that no one is positive in school that day exposing others.
Why have our schools become a Petri dish? There is no science data. We are the data and it is on you, just remember that.
Let's hope you don't have a grandma at home who you love.
anyway i can make up work or do extra work to pass yourclass with a good grade because i failed last marking period
ReplyDeleteBut you don't come to class and haven't done the work that is already posted...

DeBlahblah's wife misplaced 850 million. Not 8 million. Papers claim the duo have wasted 1.8 billion over his terms.
ReplyDeleteChild abuse and teacher abuse.
ReplyDeleteDOE says schools that rely on open windows for ventilation have heating systems that can “compensate” for cold air.
Head of custodian engineer union: “The heating plants are not deigned to operate with the windows open in the wintertime.”
The only way things will change is if we get militant. By we I mean the rank and file. We need to run over who ever is in our way, Deblasio, Cuomo, Mulgrew, the DOE. However, I don’t see us doing this when 1/2 of our members are either pussies, pushovers, or assholes who think covid is not a big deal.
ReplyDelete1014... custodial engineer full of shit. We’ve been doing it in my school for the 20 years I’ve been there. Way too much heat. Classroom windows all open. No problem except waste of heating oil.
ReplyDeleteRandi wants the federal gov't doing even more unwarranted (education is not in Article I Section 8!) meddling (i.e. boys in the girls locker room) and spending on Education. "Proper funding" mostly means wasting money on nonsense. She also wants forced vaccinations.
ReplyDelete“Let's get UFT sweatshirts for people who need to keep windows open.” Our beneficent leader, the great Mulgrew really cares.
ReplyDeleteSorry about that. Whats another 50 million when people are out of work not knowing where their next paycheck is coming from.

ReplyDeleteBUT MULGREW AND CRONIES STAY HOME AND NEVER WENT BACK WHEN VIRUS LOWER!
Are parents being surveyed about what % of cases would make them hesitant to send kids to schools? I think a 5,7 or 9% should be asked to gather some more data.
ReplyDeletePlagiarist Biden from the 80's doing exactly what TRump is doing lol, he fits in perfectly with grade fraud, claiming he was top of his class when he was like 68/75.
Pelosi admitting she did not give covid relief to small businesses and struggling families. GET THIS!!!! BECAUSE OF PRESIDENT TRUMP, NO WAY! She clearly stated that now since there is a new so called president she will look to pass. How can any POS support this party, then do not give a shit about you, they want power. Think Pelosi cares about illegals???? She wants votes, how can nobody see through this???? China owns the dems , Feinstein 20 years had a chinese spy now Butthead Eric Swawell has been compromised from a chinese spy and he sits on intelligence committee. Insane!
How did this turn into Democrats vs Republicans? We are not stupid. The lesser of the evils is still evil.
ReplyDeleteThat said, which party is insisting as a non negotiable for a liability shield for COVID-19 relief? Giving employers this protection in a pandemic will basically let employers kill us with no or few consequences.
Biden said last night...I posted it...Schools open. Thay is counter what most teachers want. The uft already had no consequences for killing us, nor did the doe. James, you forget quickly.
ReplyDeleteThe liability shield would put no consequences into law. That's far worse than a shitty union not doing much.
ReplyDeleteEither way, sick or dead. I guess March 17 to 19 doesn't matter anymore.
