MOST OF A THIRD GRADE CLASS IN OLD BETHPAGE TESTS POSITIVE FOR COVID-19

The next time some know-it-all tells you how COVID-19 does not spread in schools, show them this news from Old Bethpage, Long Island.

This is from CBS2NY:

OLD BETHPAGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — An elementary school on Long Island has been forced to stop in-person learning after nearly an entire class of third graders tested positive for COVID-19.

Old Bethpage Elementary has been closed for in-person learning since Jan. 25 following the coronavirus outbreak.

Eleven of the 16 children in the third-grade class and the teacher tested positive.

I find it very interesting that this story is from today's news but the building has been closed since January 25.

  1. And yet the head of the CDC says schools can reopen without teachers being vaccinated and the progressive democrat bosses in Chicago say teachers should return to class and the same woke bosses continue to lock out teachers from remote learning. Face it. Too many teachers put their hopes and dreams on democrats. Well you heard the democrats. Get back into schools. The irony is if Trump stayed, the dems would still be playing say the opposite of Trump and they most likely wouldn’t be agreeing with him to open schools. It’s not going to end well for Chicago teachers. That’s my prediction.

  2. The difference between that and city schools is that in person in city schools have maybe 2-3 kids in a room(at least that was my experience). 16 is too much in a room.

I will amend my comments from the other day. If schools were to open and have protocols and were maybe 2-3 kids in a room, I would feel comfortable going back to in person learning. This is in no way judging anyone who does not feel comfortable.

However, if class sizes were 15-20, that would be a hard no.

  3. I live in the suburbs and am amazed that with Long Island having its high covid rate that families, teachers and admins as well as hack superintendents are ok with 16-20 kids in a room. That’s ridiculous.

The one good thing about being a city teacher is you don’t deal with insane parents who question everything.

Heck, I’ve been on the job close to two decades and guess how many times I have been questioned on grades? Hint: it resembles a goose egg.

Sadly, leaders want to tell the civilians ‘hey, we opened schools. Look at what we did!’

It may be worse in suburbs than in city. Just my opinion.

Also, as a teacher, look at the insane rates suburban teachers pay for health insurance. That’s why their salaries look higher.

More job security and better insurance in doe. Granted, the job and traffic suck, but the bs is higher in suburbs.

  6. Yeah, they’re all pushing to open the schools the second that Trump left office. Before that the schools had to stay closed. I detest/ed Trump and I voted for him solely on the abortion issue. He’s the only Republican I’ve ever voted for, ever. I find the Democratic party to be just as Despicable as the republican party. The school situation is a politicized land mine.

  7. So to really expedite the safe opening of schools—not only do you need the adults to be vaccinated—there also has to be a vaccine developed that can also administered for all students as well.

  11. Did anyone say zero chance?

My kids are in classes between 15 and 20. No problems. Whole elementary school has had about 20 positive tests this year, no one sick.

The real devil in the details according to "the dashboard" is that there is a higher rate of positives among the remotes than among those in school.

It's not that there is zero risk in school. Nothing in life is zero risk. It's just no worse than a restaurant, movie theater, airplane, museum, public transit, shopping, visiting relatives, etc.

  15. My elementary school has a couple of classes with 16-18 kids. I have no idea how we are going to keep social distancing rules in place in September when everybody comes back. (That will also depend on how many parents do indeed plan to send their kids back) Society needs to know that even when high numbers of people get the vaccine, social distancing will still need to take place for an amount of time that is to be determined. NOBODY in charge of schools is thinking of this. They are hoping that Biden and the CDC will relax social distancing by the end of the summer and schools will be "back to to normal". Of course, the UFT will just sit back and take this kick to the face without a fight.

  16. I wouldn't put my hopes and dreams in the democrats or the republicans, but what is needed most right now is money and the democrats are delivering. The democrats, from Obama and his race to the bottom, to Cuomo, and his re-imagining education with Bill Gates, are really not much better than the republicans on policy alignment to unions, so why waste dues dollars on policy, teacher evaluations, tenure, charter schools ... when the records of the two parties are essentially the same, though the rhetoric is improved with Biden and Chuck and Nancy, but when you look at what is happening to support us with dollars it's no contest. The money to the state and city, to public education is pouring in. $2 billion of red wiped out for Medicaid alone in NY. And, suddenly Cuomo is tapping the bonds and short term paper markets, $10 billion to the MTA, $3 billion to Penn Station and other transportation projects in NYC. Cuomo is a master builder in NY because get around the Debt reform Law. Look to him and the democrats to build, build, build, and spend and run up debt here. All good for us union people.

So who cares about observations and tenure? Please, your missing the woods for the trees people. We riding the gravy train. What we need in money. Money means jobs. It's that simple now.

We are reflating here, check the price of commodities, oil ... all up, the economy, with pent up demand, flooded with cash is getting another shot in the arm here from Biden. We need it, as the real unemployment rate is still up around 10%, higher here in NYC. And here comes the green, baby. There is only one party in America, the business party, and right now the democrats have the votes to pull the lever of business in a massive way, never done before. The coordination of Yellen and Jay, Nancy and Chuck will keep us employed.

Our biggest challenge is still our so-called union. Mulgrew, the rooster that takes credit for the dawn here, will continue to sell us out, claiming that he's kept us in work, that the budgets are too tight for raises, he will look to cut benefits.

Had we struck it would game over for Mike, but we missed out chance. Now we have the flood of green that will keep us working but we will have to give and give cause that's how Mike stays in power.

  19. Yikes. Even TeachNY is talking about some people not being back in September. Social distancing in the fall. Even Biden and Cuomo understand that can't happen, thus the "100 day" challenge. NYC has over 11% unemployment; Florida is at 6%, South Dakota at 3%. The "open" states are managing better COVID death rates than the "closed" ones. The lockdown lunacy must end. We don't need money printing, Shelley unintentionally pointed out the inflation already being caused by the devaluation of our currency, heating oil up over 50 cents a gallon just since the election, there's a housing bubble 2.0. Rough times are ahead and it has nothing to do with COVID.

  20. Shelly has one of the keenest incites into our corrupt country, state and union. I also appreciate James’ challenges to Shelly’s ideas although in the end, I tend to agree with Shelly. Provoking thought and debating dissenting ideas is a good thing. I don’t have to agree with someone to respect the logic and thought put into their ideas. Both Shelly and James have demonstrated they deserve the respect of not just responding with an insult. Thank you James for giving people both a place to simply vent and a place to share deeper thoughts.

  21. What can they do with their observations? Not much. They use them to groom young sycophants, to frighten sheep, to keep TeachNY & Co. working for free, to paper over their insecurities. The biggest thing you have to fear is fear. Fuck them. Push your chest out and walk with a swagger. Carry a lesson plan to every class, in your pocket, one only you can read. It is YOURS. Push back hard. Push hard and they will either back off or you will need to push harder. Bring in a vet colleague. Your chapter leader might be a kid or a fool or spy or scumbag. Get someone you trust. Get in their faces and push back.

They have more nasty tricks than observations. Low obs are really nothing to a vet teacher. sign them right away, write a rebuttal. Go home an relax. Look at your TDA balance and laugh.

  22. Weaponized Danielson can be more than an annoyance. They are used in dismissal hearings and the DOE does not care if the MOSL is effective. As Chaz pointed out, DOE charged many more educators since the Klein-Bloomberg days and it didn't slow down under de Blasio.

    ReplyDelete
  23. But your not going to a dismissal hearing for low obs. They have nasty tricks that can get you to a dismissal hearing, yes, but that is really another matter. A rare thing, yes, more than an annoyance, a disgusting disgrace, a travesty of fair and professional arbitration, but they are very rare, and very few teachers ever get to one and those that do, when they fight, are back teaching again. No rubber room. Yes, the ATR agreement is a disgrace, the biggest on the list, but what I am saying is that too many teachers thin they can lose their jobs or be pushed out by low obs. No. That doesn't happen. There is a slow process and you can slow it down and fight it. There is too much fear of obs. Too much concern with obs, high and low. If you are high it's bullshit, if you are low it's bullshit, but teachers are now believing in these stupid things. They are meaningless.

  24. The death rates in the USA are outrageously high. Hawaii and Vermont have the lowest death rates per 100,000 people. Florida is in the middle. NY has the second highest. 450,000 dead Americans is not acceptable to me. Our half assed lock downs and travel restrictions have failed. The degree of failure based on which party runs the local government is a generally meaningless comparison. There really have been no enforceable travel restrictions between states. We are one big country with a bipartisan failed COVID-19 response. That is obvious.

  27. I did a quick google search on flu virus. No idea if the sources I read were credible but I was curious about why the flu makes a comeback every year and where does the virus go when it’s not flu season. My simplistic understanding from what I read is that the virus hangs out in people and waits to rear its ugly head to spread. (I’m no science teacher as you can tell). So my question is this. If we all stayed home for a month wouldn’t the virus still be out there somewhere waiting to get us...like the flu? Anybody have a better understanding of general virus dormancy and spread? James, at what point would you end lockdowns? The horse is out of the barn so I’m talking about going forward. What if every time we locked down the virus started to spread within a month post lockdown? Lockdown again? Who’s ok with locking down a total of 3 to 5 months every year by locking down again and again. Ideally the country should have been completely shut down for 2 weeks last January when we first heard about the China virus. But going forward....I see the spread as inevitable....to a lesser extent if many get vaccinated.

Right now we are racing against time to vaccinate enough people so the new variants won't spread wildly here. My guess is we will continue to mess up with half ass lockdowns but I hope I am wrong on that one.

  29. James and Shelly both have good points. I don't worry too much about the obs because it's pretty hard not to get the Effective when all is said and done. Even without obs, admin will find a way to get you out if they insist they want you out. Like any other job, there's a give and take with your boss. If you make it hard or undesirable to replace you, they won't. If you're as useful (to admin) as a newbie that costs half the price, then they'll want you out. You can make yourself valuable without nonsense like doing work for free or passing everyone.

My main issue is that Mulgrew throws his hands in the air and says the eval system is the law. However how is any of this valid in the HS, with school closed and with no Regents (so no "MOTP")? In my school admin is pushing "engagement" as mentioned by Mulgrew at the DA, yet the City forbids mandating attendance, and admin encourages or promotes non-attendance.

  36. On Saturday, February 06, 2021 @ 11:45:00 AM, an Anonymous poster says,
"hundreds of veteran teachers brought up on incompetency 3020a charges based solely on shitty observations."

I don't have the figures, but I know someone who does, so I'll look into it.

How many were removed from classroom, lost their jobs? Last time I looked at these figures the percentage was less than 1%

But I could be wrong about this. Maybe it has gotten worse, maybe better, don't know.

What I've seen is that observations don't much make any difference. What they do is they gang up on a teacher, using all manner of dirty tricks, including, using other teachers, students, parents, other employees in the building, alumni, and so on. The get inside people's heads, people with 30 years of satisfactory ratings and highly effective ratings are suddenly hit with ineffective and the teacher, who may have a file fat with praise and thanks you letters is said to be incompetent. The teacher folds, retires. Or transfers. That there is ageism is indisputable, so it's veteran teachers, higher salaried teachers who are targeted, and the vocal, the teachers who challenge Admins when they engage in union busting and abuse. But we know all this. What I am saying, and I've overstated the point, is that there is an obsession with observation scores and this plays in to the hands of the Admins.

BTW we did have some success when we forced our Admins to model lessons and when we observed them.

  38. The origin of the Covid virus is not known for sure.
It has not beeen investigated until now.

The possibility that it was released form a laboratory near the Wuhan fresh market cannot be ruled out.

The Chinese government has not been transparent. It has forcefully prevented its citizens from discussing the origins of the virus that seems to have originated in Wuhan China.

The Wuhan fresh market outbreak was an early cluster of infected individuals.

There are known cases of infected individuals prior to the outbreak at the Wuhan fresh market. These earlier cases had no connection to the Wuhan fresh market.

Those are some of the known facts. You are entitled to your opinions no matter how wrong they might be. You are not entitled to your own facts.

However, two years of shitty observations, and you can be fired, plain and simple. You can try to challenge technical points in the observations but that is an uphill battle. 54. Sunday, February 07, 2021 10:43:00 AM says,

Shelly, I still disagree with you. Yes, principals use all kinds of dirty tricks to target a veteran teacher. However, at a 3020a hearing, those tricks don't hold a lot of weight as they can be disproven or not allowed to be used if they are false allegations. However, two years of shitty observations, and you can be fired, plain and simple. You can try to challenge technical points in the observations but that is an uphill battle. I don't know if you were around back when we had S/U. I do and I loved it dearly as do all the other veteran teachers who were around back then. Danielson is a weapon and most vets know it.

Most of my career was under the old S and U system. Much better, yes, but what if at the end of the year when you went to the office to get your rating it was a U? Shock! Now what? In one of my early years they screwed up and said, though I had prefect attendance, that I was absent some 6 times and late 12 times. I was never late or absent. Never got that fixed.

How many, someone said hundred, teachers, someone here claims it was hundreds, have been fired for two years of ineffective ratings?

I don't fear low observations. Of course, I'm retiring so I don't fear anything. BUt I never have. Always stood up to bullies. Just me. I can't stand people who abuse power and I love teachers so ...but there is too much, irrational fear of low obs in my humble opinion, it weakens us.

  55. No mention of police office, David Dorn, who was also black, murdered during a blm riot.

  56. Lol w4s. So why is the black community having all these problems? 8 years of Obama. Dems control everything again. Ny has the most liberal mayor in the country. Yet, the only way to get anywhere is to eliminate tests and give meritless grades. Says a lot.

Lol...the black community having all these problems? Have you been in an alternate universe? The USA is a JOKE. You do not know US history. You probably know what is in our US books but it's fake or misleading at best.
The USA is having ALL these problems. Hell the government doesn't even respect you--a teacher. You seem to think this is a dem/rep problem. You think it's white/black?
You really need to expand your circle and learn more about your world.

    2. @10:05...
if you really want to be a help and a not hindrance talk with your colleagues who GIVE meritless grades. Quiet as it's kept, it's Not students who are giving grades. It's Not admin who are giving these so called merit less grades.
PS. Not all students who fail or don't do your schoolwork are incapable. Hell I know some colleagues who are dumb as turkeys.

    3. Ok, so they aren't incapable, they just choose not to do the work? That means they are lazy bums.

  57. Pre Bloomberg there were less than 100 3020a hearings per year according to Chaz. Now about 400 per year and one teacher, if we are to believe the numbers which I do, was exonerated.

Many schools with decent administrators haven't gone for a 3020a in years so yes this can be scary if you are in a building with a vindictive administration.

  58. So I guess testing and safety are gone again if middle schools are open

  59. Maybe speaking and writing proper English would be useful for students.

    Try selling that! I mean
the last president did well enough without both of skills.

  61. Perhapsm while fawning over 1/6, you also missed the inmates destroying the jail a few days ago lighting in on fire, flooding it, breaking windows...Cori Bush praised this. Bush leads one of the most crime infested, least educated and poorest districts in the country. Why was that destruction acceptable?

    ReplyDelete
  62. I know many Educated teachers who live in low crime communities. They continuously and willingly contribute to the destruction of our country. They then turn around and bash the least educated and poor. They wont take a stand for their own lives but knock people who do. Mediocracy is what we celebrate. Mediocracy. Money. Law and order. Hey it's the American way

  63. I'm sure you would have a problem with this..

THE FIX IS IN: Right after the election, Hunter Biden retained criminal defense lawyer Chris Clark. Then, one day after he took office, Joe Biden installed Clark's law partner to head the Justice Department's Criminal Division investigating his son

  64. Since this is about covid, do you have a problem with people prancing through the border without a covid test, without ID...

  65. Border should be closed in the pandemic and truly enforced.

  66. Perhaps you should tell Randi, Joe and Kamala that...

  67. Hahaha W4s I took my woke pills. I’m in the club now and agree with woke Carranza and DeBlasio. Lazy bums want to keep children of color out of school. Only the racists here want to deny these children the same high grades that white suburban kids are getting. The arrogance of the privileged who think their grade policy is better than woke Carranza’s policy is hahaha funny. Carranza is 100% right. Open schools and give theses kids high grades. Only lazy bums and racists disagree with Carranza. I don’t think you know what woke is because it’s not in line with Carranza’s wokeness. What do you have against Hispanic males that makes you disagree with Carranza? I think you need to expand your circle and include men like Carranza. Maybe then you’ll agree with him and want schools open and kids to get high grades. Praying for you.

  70. Oh, and I am not a middle school teacher, but let's see if there is a surge after middle schools open.but even so, they wouldnt close anyway.i read that vaccinated folks are getting covid.so now we will have more asymptomatic transmission cuz people will barely realize they are ill.
