Not surprised to see who is pushing the reopen the schools people. It is our traditional right wing, anti-public school, anti-union enemies.
This comes from The Intercept:
THIS WEEK IN Chicago, as the local teachers union considers whether to strike over the safety of the city’s school reopening plan during the pandemic, a group of at least nine parents represented by the Liberty Justice Center, a conservative public interest law firm, say they’re ready to sue if educators vote for a work stoppage.
Lawyers with the Liberty Justice Center — the same legal organization which brought the landmark Janus v. AFSCME lawsuit in 2018 to the U.S Supreme Court — argue a Chicago Teachers Union strike would be in violation of Illinois law and the union’s current collective bargaining agreement. The CTU contract commits to avoiding strikes or pickets while the agreement is in effect. “That doesn’t change even if [Chicago Public Schools] engages in an unfair labor practice or allegedly requires teachers to work in an unsafe environment,” attorney Jeffrey Schwab wrote recently in the Chicago Tribune. “It has become clear that kids are collateral damage for the union’s political and financial leverage.”
Chicago is not the only city where the anti-union law firm is seizing on parents’ frustration with virtual learning to help bring challenges against one of their long-standing political targets. The Liberty Justice Center is also representing parents in Chandler, Arizona, and Fairfax County, Virginia, where educators have organized sick-outs to protest school reopening plans. The group is an affiliate of the right-wing State Policy Network and has ties to the Bradley Foundation and the Koch network.
These people hate our union wages and benefits and want to divide us from parents. They are reaching out to suburban parents too. They would seem be content if teachers are infected with COVID-19 as long as buildings are open.
Montclair, nj also has lawsuit against their teacher union.
ReplyDeleteHuh? Lori Lightfoot ordered them back.
ReplyDeleteDid you find out when our important union will get us the money for the days they made us work on our vacation...A year ago?
ReplyDeleteDemocrats control the Illinois state legislature. Right wing can bash teachers all day long but the decisions that effect teachers are in the hands of the left. Democrats have the power in Illinois.
ReplyDeleteUnions(especially teacher unions) are an easy target politically.
ReplyDeleteHow else can people hoodwink the public? Sadly, the general public overall is not that smart. They need a scapegoat and blaming teachers and their unions is an easy way to avoid blaming families who are not active with the education of their kids or blaming politicians who take discipline out of the schools.
This is why people are fed up.
Me? I’m not fed up. I get that this is a game. A game of survival. In the doe you have a few options. They are to make yourself nuts and fight every battle or smile and tell the admins that everything is great and go live your life at 2:30.
The choice you make is your own. I don’t throw stones at the ones who go above and beyond and I get why some people fake it until you make it to keep their sanity.
At times, I play both games haha
Any comment?

Has the UFT made any statement regarding what the CTU is doing and is going through? Solidarity between workers and unions is deeply important.
ReplyDeleteNothing new. Gates, the dead or alive Koch brothers, Zuckerberg, Bloomberg, etc. all want a piece of the education $$$$ action. They make believe they care about the poor non-white children because the horrible teachers union demands better than minimum wage for their members. ‘No one will work for free anymore !!’ So why doesn’t that less than quarter wit Mulgrew or or the heads of the other teacher unions do better public relations of their own? (That doesn’t mean another article in The NY Teacher touting Mulgrew’s soft shoe dance moves.)
ReplyDeleteYes, those with axes to grind against teachers' unions (or unions in general) are still at work.
ReplyDeleteI wish the AFT and locals didn't make it so easy for them.
Who's responsible for the people moving out of the City to places with jobs, like Florida, or even nearby suburbs with open schools?
Who's responsible for the enrollment decreases, which leads to excessing for the newer teachers, and less 6th classes and such even for veterans? Is it helpful to encourage a flight to Catholic and private schools as well as home schooling?
These developments may hurt teachers more than the Kochs ever could.
I agree. We will all suffer for the inflexible stance the UFT and other unions have taken on school reopening. Kids, the most.

ReplyDeleteJAMES READ LOL, TIME JUST SAID THEY CHEATED.
I read some of it. This line got to me:
ReplyDelete"The handshake between business and labor was just one component of a vast, cross-partisan campaign to protect the election–an extraordinary shadow effort dedicated not to winning the vote but to ensuring it would be free and fair, credible and uncorrupted."
