FLORIDA PEDIATRIC COVID HOSPITALIZATIONS RISING AS SCHOOL OPENS

 This is from the AP:

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Doctors in Florida say they’re seeing many more coronavirus infections among children just as students begin to return to classrooms.

There has been “an enormous increase” in COVID-19 cases among children in July and August at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ronald Ford said.

Most of these children have been treated in the emergency room and sent home, but “those that are admitted are sicker than what we’ve seen before, and many of them are requiring care in our intensive care units,” Ford said.

But Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says the share of pediatric hospitalizations is still between 1.1% and 1.4% in the state, which is how it has behaved throughout the pandemic. On Wednesday, 177 of the 15,071 patients with COVID-19 — about 1.2 % — were children, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

“There’s been no change in the proportion of pediatric patients who are COVID positive,” he said. “Obviously we have more people that are COVID positive in hospitals than we did six weeks ago, so the raw numbers are increasing for everybody.”

About 20 children who had the virus sought treatment at the South Florida hospital’s emergency department in June, Ford said.

“That number went to well over 200 in July and, even at this point in the month of August, we are already up to over 160. So we’re well on the way to breaking July’s record,” Ford said.

On Tuesday, the hospital had nine positive patients admitted, with five in the ICU, Ford said.

Ford’s advice to parents sending their children back to school: Get information from authoritative sources.

“There’s a lot of misinformation out there about COVID-19, about testing, about the vaccine,” Ford said. “The best thing you can do to protect your child is to keep them away from the virus. This virus is extremely infectious. And it doesn’t take much virus to infect and cause symptoms and disease.”

Masking works, reducing the incidence of transmission and the chances of children getting the virus, he said.

“So first and foremost, masking is going to be one of the best defenses we have,” Ford said.

Do politicians really want to play politics with the well-being of children? Florida's governor opposes mask mandates.

  1. I am not disputing that cases are up but i watched an interview with the gov and hospital docs.they said many of the patients are there due to a rise in rsv, a respiratory infection. I believe people should be responsible.that doesnt mean crowding the beaches and bars...my friend visited fla.she said that while thete is concern, people are more laid back about covid than fla.i guess when the stats come out for death, we will have a clearer idea...

  2. I know it's only been 17 months but can someone ask Biden/Fauci/Walensky to explain why kids in Europe mostly don't wear masks in school? And why masking in general starts at 12 years old there? Is there no curiosity as to the answer? None?

  3. Stupid Trump supporters and these stupid republican governors are prolonging this pandemic. It’s so simple just get vaccinated.

  4. This is from WHO

Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on schooling
Across the WHO European Region, the pandemic had a dire impact on schooling during the 2020-2021 academic year. UNESCO’s monitoring of national distance learning solutions shows that 44 out of 53 countries in the WHO European Region closed their schools at the national level at the height of the pandemic in April 2020.

    France 2020

Millions of students headed back to class in France, Belgium and England on Tuesday as European schools cautiously reopened amid rising coronavirus cases in several countries, with face masks often mandatory.

  5. Lambda variant is spreading throughout South America

Biden has left our southern border open

Japanese study says Lambda may be vaccine-resistant

Pay attention to where this is going

  6. I say we charge any child entering a school without a mask with attempted murder because surely someone will die as a result!

Is that good enough the crazy covidians?

  7. Oh 3:37 check the zip codes vax status in nyc. It ain’t the Trump supporters being “stupid.” How are we going to force all these unvaccinated nyc residents to get the vaccine. Should we round them up with a paddy wagon? Such horrible people living in our beloved city. They need to LEAVE like yesterday.

  8. To the guy who keeps trying to post wrong neighborhood vaccinatio rates,

Check with this site to get some official numbers instead of throwing them around.

  10. Can someone explain to me how I am a threat to you who were vaccinated if I choose not to be vaccinated? Don't you believe in the vaccine? Don't you believe it's effective? Why did you get it if you don't believe in it? And why do you want me to get it if you don't believe it's effective?
The Communists are out of control in this country. They should pack up and move to China, where they will be happily controlled by the state.
And by the way, why is it that all the leftists who call for diversity diversity diversity are not able to tolerate diversity of thought? Censorship is a favorite tool of the Communists.

  12. Dumb Trump.

Only 27% of young Black New Yorkers are fully vaccinated, data shows. Many say they fear that during these uncertain times they could not trust the government with their health.

“This is a major public health failure,” said an epidemiologist. https://nyti.ms/3AFpiJl

9,:07 i worked in child and adolescent psych for 20 years.nearly all had been sex victims.many were in foster care, repeatedly sexually assaulted over and over in numerous homes.at one point, i didnt believe them.they could not believe that i had never been victimized! when i read about the foster care system being a major funnel for this, i felt very bad for doubting the stories(i never let on that i was doubtful).these were real stories.not right wing lies.i watched a program where they intwrviewed a woman who almost sold her baby knowing it might be raped to death!it was a sort of expose and extremely disturbing.one of the criminals coulsnt face himseld after thebinterviews;he killed himself.this baby survived because the people doing the expose paid the woman to stop her from selling it to the criminal.the criminal revealed volu?es about how babies are bought and some children are kidnapped for abuse and often, for organ harvest. Very tough to hear these atrocities, but that doesnt mean its conspiracy theory.

  17. But ultimately, many also said they would get vaccinated if forced to do so.

“If it’s going to be mandatory to work, I’ll have no choice,” said Kaleshia Sostre, a 27-year-old from Red Hook, Brooklyn, who teaches parenting classes to young mothers.

In Canarsie, Brooklyn, a 21-year-old college student, Justin Mercado, said Mayor Bill de Blasio’s recent announcement that dining in a restaurant would require proof of vaccination got his attention. He is now likely to get vaccinated.

"One of the three vaccines — the single-shot Johnson & Johnson — had been directed to Black and Latino communities, among other places"

But in April, the federal government ordered a brief suspension of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine after it was linked to blood clots in the brains of several women.

“It reaffirmed my hesitance, it reaffirmed everything,” Ms. Shavuo-Goodwin, the graduate student and clinic manager, said. “It just shows Black lives don’t matter. You can test that on us just like you tested syphilis on us.”

"This fear was echoed in interview after interview, from the Bronx to South Brooklyn, as many Black New Yorkers said the Johnson & Johnson suspension left them more anxious that the vaccines were unsafe, insufficiently tested and steered to Black neighborhoods. That fear has been slow to dissipate, even as much of the rest of the country got vaccinated."

“They’re experimenting on us,” said Knya White, 21, of Canarsie, Brooklyn, a predominantly Black neighborhood.

  18. @8:42 - "In New York City, there are more unvaccinated White people than Black people, despite the difference in vaccination rates."

"It estimates that Black Americans make up about 13 percent of the unvaccinated population and 13 percent of the group that says it will never receive a dose of the vaccine. Republicans, by contrast, make up more than half of each group, including nearly 6 in 10 of those who say they won’t get vaccinated."

"It’s also disingenuous to compare Black and White vaccination rates overall, since White rates are actually higher in part because so many White people are Democrats!

  19. 11:03 what?? I know child sex rings exist but there is no ring being run by Hillary Clinton out of the basement of a pizza shop and Democrats in office are not Satanists, drinking the blood of children and keeping them hostage in a basement until Trump rushes in to save them. I'd bet that That poster knew exactly what I was talking about. That's just crazy talk and some fools do believe it because one actually took a weapon to the actual pizza shop to try and save the imaginary children and was arrested.

  22. Why has everything become so political? It would behoove US society to rein in identity politics. It also gets very boring. There are all sorts of people all over the political spectrum. I don't believe anything I read or hear at face value. It seems that all sides are lying or denying. There is more to every story or article. Do your research. Read and listen from multiple sources on all sides of an issue, then make up your mind. Oh, and get off social media; it is toxic.

  23. Back to that Texas Tribune story

"We’re seeing a significantly greater number of children who are being hospitalized with COVID-19. Some are requiring ICU care, more than we’ve seen with previous surges, and that’s related to the increased transmissibility of delta,” said Dr. Seth D. Kaplan, president of the Texas Pediatric Society. “This is just a more aggressive variant. It’s sickening more children, and requiring more to be hospitalized. So that, on top of the RSV, is what’s really causing the capacity issues.”

“It is spreading like wildfire,” said Dr. Jim Versalovic, pathologist-in-chief and interim pediatrician-in-chief at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. “During the past several weeks, Texas Children’s has been escalating strategies in terms of dealing with this dual surge.”

  24. 8/12 9:01--
"A growing body of evidence indicates that people fully vaccinated with an mRNA vaccine (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna) are less likely than unvaccinated persons to acquire SARS-CoV-2 or to transmit it to others. However, the risk for SARS-CoV-2 breakthrough infection in fully vaccinated people cannot be completely eliminated as long as there is continued community transmission of the virus." https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/science/science-briefs/fully-vaccinated-people.html
It's about controlling the transmission. That's why masks/distancing are the first line of defense. The vaccine is second, and those who have it (like many high profile Republicans) are much better protected from severe illness or death. Those who don't have it are more likely to spread it and increase in transmission increases the probability of variants.
    Good luck.

  25. Biden and Kamala are a total failure…they want to cry the sky is falling due to COVID 19 ..mandates are necessary..yet the biggest failure is not closing the border during what everyone calls a pandemic..then people wonder why there is hesitancy to anything coming from our government..you can keep blaming Trump until the cows come home but Biden and the Jackal own this disaster

  27. I would worry, but mulgrew has my back.

As of Wednesday, Israel had 451 seriously ill Covid patients in its hospitals.

    276 are vaccinated: 266 fully, 10 partly.

A year ago today, before vaccines existed, it had a TOTAL of 368 seriously ill hospitalized patients.

If this is vaccine success, I'd hate to see failure.

Democrats have lost all credibility with COVID hysteria. They’re importing the virus.

  35. The Chinese people have been indoctrinated by the Chinese Communist Party. Their opinions are worthless to Americans. It’s like valuing the opinion of a cultist before they’ve been deprogrammed. America values individualism. It’s better for 100 guilty men to go free than to have 1 innocent man imprisoned. Ideology that argues against individual freedoms and tries to force group think compliance does not belong in America.
