CANADIAN REPORT AFTER SARS-1 SAYS FOLLOW THE SAFETY; 1 NYC SCHOOL CLOSES FOR COVID AFTER 19 CASES

I found reading part of a Canadian report following the original SARS-1 outbreak in 2003 to be fascinating.

Mr. Justice Archie Campbell:

I think this would apply to schools too. In NYC, it took 19 positive COVID-19 cases to close one school, P.S. 79 in East Harlem.

From the the NY Post article on the closing:

East Harlem public school closed after COVID-19 outbreak

By Conor Skelding and Susan Edelman

After being open only a week, a city public school in East Harlem is the first to cancel in-person classes, after a COVID-19 outbreak among staffers.

Nineteen people tested positive as of Friday at P.S. 79 on East 120th Street, prompting officials to switch over to remote education, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer tweeted.

“My understanding is there are enough cases of COVID that the [Department of Education COVID-19] Situation Room has decided to close the school for 10 days until Sept. 28,” Brewer told The Post.

In addition to 19 “confirmed” cases, 45 others were quarantined, the City Council’s education chair, Mark Treyger, added.

Citywide school COVID-19  positive numbers are not exactly encouraging:

Across the city’s traditional public schools, 372  classrooms were fully closed and 303 were partially closed as of Friday, according to the tracker. There were 812 total cases of COVID-19 between Sept. 13 and 17– 487 students and 325 staff.

There is not much COVID testing going on so it might be underreported. Is that Canadian justice available? Why don't we error on the side of safety?

The UFT made it clear over the summer that biweekly testing was insufficient. The first week of school, including photos of students packed into crowded hallways and cafeterias, only strengthens the argument for more testing.

  13. Yes, the UFT leadership is deplorable.

However the real fundamental issue is Mayoral control of the school system
There has been 20 years of criminal mismanagement of the NYC public schools by the mayor.

Fake diplomas ( Maspeth High School is just typical of most public NYC public schools), fake data, toxic school physical environments, major school safety issues, cronyism, bad technology contracts, reckless disregard for public health during the Covid pandemic.

    Our students deserve better schools.
Our citizens deserve legitimate management of their public schools.

The egregious failure with NY city public schools is with mayoral control.

De Blasio has failed the citizens of NY city just like Bloomberg before him did.

End Mayoral Control of the Public Schools Now.

Make NY City Public Schools Great Again!

Moreover, the poll showed that Republicans who have sought to make “personal choice” and “personal responsibility” the slogans of their Covid-19 response plans are in a clear minority when it comes to support for their views.

"More than two thirds of respondents said that they supported school districts requiring both teachers and students to mask up, a prospect that has been openly opposed by some GOP leaders such as Florida’s Ron DeSantis. About the same percentage of respondents said that businesses should be allowed to institute their own mask mandates at their choosing.

Conservatives are losing ground on just about every aspect of their messaging regarding the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the poll."
