This is from the LA Times:
The Los Angeles teachers union is calling for mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations for all eligible students and stricter quarantine rules while raising some objections to a new district mandate for online instruction when students are in quarantine.
The demand from United Teachers Los Angeles, in a proposal submitted at the bargaining table, calls for students “to achieve full vaccination no later than 12 weeks following the birthday in which they become eligible,” subject to medical and religious exemptions laid out in state and federal law.
The union’s proposals were laid out in a document called “Counterproposal #2,” which is dated Aug. 26 and was supplied to The Times. There is no indication that the district has agreed to either proposal, which would further cement L.A. Unified’s coronavirus rules as among the strictest in the nation.
district has agreed to either proposal, which would further cement L.A. Unified’s coronavirus rules as among the strictest in the nation.
The nation’s second-largest school district is already operating the most ambitious coronavirus testing operation in the county, with weekly mandatory testing of all on campus and mask mandates indoors and outdoors.
The district’s online teaching plan will have the most immediate effect on students — thousands remain at home in isolation or quarantine, although the number of infections declined overall during the second week of school.
Many of these students had been receiving limited instruction during the first two weeks of school, which began on Aug. 16. The district’s announcement should resolve much of the confusion and uncertainty around instruction during quarantines.
“Students and families need clear expectations and support for learning at home while they’re asked to isolate or quarantine,” L.A. Unified Interim Supt. Megan Reilly said in a statement. “This plan serves as an interim guide for educators and supporting students during this difficult and unique time.”
The new policy represents a partial return to the Zoom-based classes of the last two school years, which school systems had hoped to leave behind as the coronavirus pandemic subsided. But the surge in the Delta variant and safety protocols have prompted schools in Los Angeles — and across the county — to send thousands of students home.
Further down:
At least one other California school system is requiring students to be vaccinated: Culver City Unified recently announced the policy, pending appropriate regulatory approval.
Do they not have large anti-vax mandate groups in large numbers in California?
What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
ReplyDeleteIf we must be vaccinated so students! OUR HEALTH MATTERS TOO!
I do not want to be exposed to covid and bring it home to my own children.
THIS SHOULD BE A MANDATE. STOP PUTTING IT ALL ON THE ADULTS. WE TEACHERS NEED RIGHTS TOO!
Whaaaat? A teacher union that actually "DEMANDS" something? Mulgrew could learn a lot from these people.
ReplyDeleteWith a union like this...
ReplyDeletehttps://gothamist.com/news/nyc-approves-4000-classrooms-unreliable-ventilation-person-schooling?fbclid=IwAR0MKTnXvsQBEii4GeUC_bsCZ_vi55WH6acVUWFPFxyLTuWpyM9rfW1M7GE
I like to see that happen in NYC where last year families were given countless extensions to just get the TDAP vaccinations updated..And they still couldnt get it done.
ReplyDeleteAt least you can ask nicely I presume. I do agree with you 1050..the best line the DOE could learn from is .
STOP PUTTING IT ALL ON THE ADULTS !!!!!..The Teachers not the DOE they are more like the children...
Delta has been surging for a while now, so once again, after school starts, or when it's about to start everyone starts flexing and blowing smoke about what needs to be done. We need mandates for students, remote options, and whatever else, and we're now getting around to it. Hahahaha. Yet the DOE and Admin is so quick to judge teachers because there was a hair out of place, a hat on someone's head, and maybe the plan wasn't executed precisely. I am not letting them stress me this year. But going back to the other thread, we really should spread the word in our schools that we must "close ranks" when they try and abuse teachers. It really doesn't help when you have Admin Pets doing their best to undermine their fellow teachers by doing the most. When they ask for X-Y-Z by tomorrow while allowing no time, the UFT rep should let them know, it's not happening, and everyone should step back.
ReplyDelete@11:37 am...
DeleteUnfortunately it seems as if judging is the standard bearer for behaviors today.
The DOE,UFT, etc judge teachers and
Teachers judge parents
Students judge teachers.
Maybe we should try scrapping it all and starting with a clean slate so that each person is held accountable for their respective job: The DOE, Teachers, Parents, UFT and students. If you want to give up instead of "closing ranks" because you feel disrespected, then that's your decision. However, don't b^tch when others do the same thing. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
So much for career and college readiness...
ReplyDeleteFor those of you who thought there would be any changes, you know, to make students learn...WRONG! This was just sent by my principal. A student can have 0% attendance and pass The guidelines talk more about equity than actualy demonstration of learning.
I guess, if we feel bad for a kid, he/she would automatically pass, bcause they don't have the perfect surroundings. Learning be damned.
This Grading Policy Toolkit (“Toolkit”) serves as a resource for school leaders, teachers, and field staff regarding the NYCDOE’s grading policies and guides schools in making decisions that are grounded in
equity, accuracy, and the social-emotional well-being of students. In alignment with the vision for culturally responsive-sustaining education, strong school-based grading policies have the power to promote:
• Accuracy: Sharpen our focus on accurately measuring what we expect students to demonstrate
in their learning so that we maintain high expectations for all students;
• Equity: Minimize the effects of bias and eliminate practices that penalize students who have
been marginalized based on their race, culture, language, and/or ability; and
• Social-emotional well-being1
: Contribute to a positive learning culture that promotes academic
risk-taking and social-emotional well-being and de-emphasizes both competition for grades and
grading based on factors beyond the scope of the classroom and beyond students’ control, such
as their proficiency level at the start of the school year, housing status, and access to study
space and Wi-Fi.
For example...PE...may not factor attendance into students’ grades or grade students predominantly on participation or preparedness. See the Grading Policy Toolkit for more details.
@Boris...
DeleteHow do your colleagues fewl about this toolkit? If they have questions about it, have they expressed it to admin as a collective? I think this goes back to what @11:37 am mentioned abkut the importance of closing ranks and holding admin to task.
Nice job, Mulgrew...Safety first.
ReplyDeleteDOE admits that there will not be social distancing on many school buses for lack of space.
But we need this union.
ReplyDeleteIf someone vaccinated tests positive will be quarantined. Chancellor: yes. (But they won’t be tested in 1st place!)
ICYMI see CSM testimony on DOE plans for far too little Covid testing
Most don't care about the DOE grading policy, they believe every student has an excuse and that excuse gets them a 65, or better. Just a few agree with me. I am a PE teacher. How the fuck can the chancellor state that attendance doesn't matter in an activity class? They can show up on day 180 and demonstrate a chest pass and get a 65? And nobody cares? But they claim to care about black children? You should all be ashamed. And of course I'm the bad guy because I have the lowest passing percentage.
ReplyDeleteURGENT: Five months = plunging COVID vaccine effectiveness
ReplyDeleteA new paper just out in the NEJM confirms human biology is the same everywhere
The New England Journal of Medicine has just published a letter reporting that Covid vaccine protection among 19,000 healthcare workers in San Diego went from 94%+ March through June to 65% in July.
It also reported vaccinated and unvaccinated people were just about as likely to be symptomatic (which means they probably had similar viral loads and risks of spreading the illness - and so much for vaccines protecting people from symptomatic disease).
Worse, the 65% figure probably OVERSTATES real vaccine effectiveness, for three reasons:
1) It includes some people who were vaccinated in March and April and were still at or close to peak protection.
2) Healthcare workers are relatively young and healthy and thus more likely to have a strong immune response.
3) This included many people vaccinated with Moderna, which has a higher dose and thus may last slightly longer than Pfizer.
Boosters today, boosters tomorrow, boosters forever!

Well there you have it "most don't care" and you're the bad guy. If teachers don't care about the profession or speak up in unison, they get shit upon in unison and the one who does care really gets it. Good luck
ReplyDeleteAnd here we go. FDA Officials resign over booster push.
ReplyDeletehttps://nypost.com/2021/09/01/two-senior-fda-officials-resign-over-biden-administration-booster-shot-plan/
Wait.. Which one is it? Do I listen to the CDC in July or September? CNN, please tell me what to do. I am vaccinated and want to travel.
ReplyDeleteJuly 30, 2021
...Delta infection resulted in similarly high SARS-CoV-2 viral loads in vaccinated and unvaccinated people. High viral loads suggest an increased risk of transmission and raised concern that, unlike with other variants, vaccinated people infected with Delta can transmit the virus. - CDC Director Rochelle P. Walensky
Sept 1, 2021
“Given where we are with disease transmission right now... Dr. Rochelle Walensky said during a White House COVID-19 briefing...“If you are unvaccinated, we would recommend not traveling"
..607pm Damm ! I thought I was protected better than that. I ain’t getting no boosters..forget that
ReplyDeleteLMAO. You can’t make this up. One FDA chief (Gottlieb) at Pfizer, now another FDA chief (Hahn) joins Flagship Pioneering, the venture firm behind Moderna. You gotta love this public/private partnerships. We used to call this fascism.

ReplyDeleteBoris. Stop giving a shit. You have it in writing. Follow the guidelines, pass the kids, collect your money and call it a day. It will change when the parents demand it. Every good school system is good because of the parents. Unfortunately NYC doesn’t have enough good parents to make a dent.
