NYC DESPERATELY SEEKING STUDENTS

How many students are there in our school system? Sue Edelman is attempting to discover the truth.

Where are they?

City educators are scrambling to find what some officials fear are 150,000 or more kids who have not yet set foot in school — and others who don’t show up on a given day.

“Reach out to every absent student every day,” the Department of Education instructed principals last week in a memo obtained by The Post.

Schools were told to follow up daily with each missing kid until they nail down the reason why he or she has not shown up — whether for one day or not at all.

“Outreach to families may include phone calls, text messages, postcards, and where possible, home visits,” the memo says.

In another urgent missive, principals told staffers that all schools with more than 20 percent of students absent will get weekly visits from DOE higher-ups — a dreaded occurrence. “We cannot continue in this direction,” one administrator warned.

“No one wants a visit from central when we’re understaffed and missing most of our paras (classroom aides who serve kids with special needs],” a teacher said, referring to a personnel crunch since the vaccine mandate took effect Oct. 4.

“I think they’re getting a lot of pressure to make things look normal when we aren’t being given the tools and staffing we need to be normal for the students.”

The directives went out a day after the City Council’s education committee held an oversight hearing to get answers on COVID-19 testing in schools, quarantines and student attendance.

Brooklyn Councilman Mark Treyger, the education committee chairman, said he had heard from contacts that some 150,000 students “have not come into a building” since classes started Sept. 13.

“Does that sound right?” Treyger asked LaShawn Robinson, the DOE’s deputy chancellor for School Climate and Wellness.

Robinson called that figure “unofficially, far from accurate,” but she did not give a better number. “We’re focused on every student, every day.” she said. Treyger, who has urged the DOE to offer families a remote instruction option, also hit a brick wall when asking First Deputy Chancellor Donald Conyers how many students are attending city schools.

“I don’t have that number to give you,” replied Conyers, the DOE’s second-in-command to Chancellor Meisha Ross Porter, who did not testify.

So, are your schools crowded or empty?

  5. One of the APs at our school suggested that teachers reach out to all of their absent students every day. They have the list of quarantined students which they claim they can't share, so we should just call home and ask why they're out, even though Admin knows why they're out. Totally ridiculous in any case, but even if were going to try and comply, when would we even have the time to do that?

  6. Get ready teachers, you are going to get the blame for this. Principals will use the same old rhetoric, if you were a good teacher and showed you cared about the students, they would be coming to your class. They will never blame themselves.

  7. Lateness has also always been a big issue—especially with a many secondary schools. Students enter buildings very often up to an hour late—missing their first class—due to transportation issues or just simply sleeping late.

Very Shocking. Notice the pattern. There is a pattern here.

And now, after 20 years of the criminal mismanagement of the NYC city public schools
these are issues? C'mon man, Common Man!

The very facts that de Blasio has not been indicted, that de Blasio is not in jail, that the NY AG, Letitia James has turned a willful blind eye to de Blasio's criminality, that the justice department ignores the criminal mismanagement of NY city is all the same old story.

de Blasio's NY is a tale of two cities, a tale of two de Blasios, and a tale of two standards of justice.

de Blasio is a CRIMINAL, period.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out , de Blasio.

  13. I agree that attendance has always been abysmal in nyc public schools. I've been a teacher for 24 years, and it was always like this. Kids can come into school whenever they want and leave whenever they want and cut whenever they want. This would never fly in the suburbs. You can see the low standards the city has. Sorry 1 out of 5 students a day absent is unacceptable. I do agree that it is ridiculous to have students commute 2 hours to school on public transportation, but as usual the city does nothing about it. For the past 24 years, I've head the same thing, do more parental outreach. If it didn't work 20 years ago, what makes you think it will work now?

  14. My school is so-so. Just as one group gets back from quarantining, another has to go out. Classes are all over the place in their learning, and will continue to be, because teachers are not going to go back and reteach everything. Some teachers post all of the work on Google Classroom and some of the students are submitting work there, but I'm not sure if it's being graded, if they're being marked present or absent, and there is not consistent guidance. It's a shit show.

  15. 1:53: Although I agree that Diblassio didn't make anything better, the city schools were in trouble long before his administration. The city schools even under the BOE were terrible. Mayoral control isn't the answer as well as taking away mayoral control though it might be a step in the right direction.

  20. We all know who this work is going to fall on, the teachers. Principals calling families, over my dead body. They can't even bother to greet students in the morning. A disgrace.

  21. Don't worry, just pretend you called the homes and make it up when you log it. There is no way APs are going to follow up to see if you actually called homes and how can they when so many different people can answer a phone. Rarely do you even get anyone to pick up. YOu're lucky if you can even get an answering machine. It's not our job as teachers to make sure students attend school.

  22. Just as the Chinese communists care nothing for their people, only the state, the city and DOE care nothing for the children and only the bureaucracy. It's hard to relocate but c'mon man, why would you stay unless you thought you had no choice?
Here's a hint... people aren't moving to Chicago or LA either.

make lesson plans for each subject/level with individualized subplans for each of your 170 students following Danielson's rubric
grade classwork, homework, & exams with individual "actionable" feedback
respond to emails from students, staff, and admin
write letters of recommendation for college
maintain thorough records with individualized plans for each student
respond to guidance, sp.ed., and meetings, usually with extensive forms to complete for multiple students per day

Oh, and for the students who don't come to your class, make certain you call home to each one of them... after tracking down a working phone number and arranging a translator.

  35. White social studies hs retired here. In my school the narrative was always pro American, but with serious concerns. Slavery, racism were definite black marks. Jim Crow, Japanese internment, Red Scares, were all covered from a liberal, not radical perspective. I think that was the norm then, and I hope, the majority now. I'm proud of the Outlook I imparted. Strongly patriotic, but not blind to the flaws. And Columbus was never a hero. Always a nuanced figure at best. Left it to students to say if he was an outright villain.

  37. 9:17 what you described teaching is American history. What’s being concocted and taught today is absurd. It’s not going on where I live. Students in my home school district graduate literate and have basic math skills. Most of their parents display the American flag on their homes. I haven’t met a young person in my community who buys into the left’s ideology. Even if their teachers are leftists no one knows because parents will not stand for any teacher promoting leftist ideas. Teachers, administrators, superintendent know they are teaching the kids of cops, firemen, plumbers, blue collar folks mostly and we’re not putting up with any of the shit going on in NYC. 50+ miles out of NYC is a completely different world. Drive out a little farther and you’ll see Biden Sucks signs on lawns. Communities get the schools they fight for. If NYC parents are content with the education their children receive, it’s fine by me. Out of all the protests that have occurred, I don’t recall one in nyc about what or how children are taught. Parents seem satisfied to me.

An accurate and verified student is critical to the number of teachers that could be excessed or heaven forbid result in an ATR increase.
Of course, the DOE will never give in to a reduction of class size, pandemic or no pandemic. Or will they?

Although my school seems safe, I know that is not universal. I fully appreciate my parents' sacrifices so that we could have a solid school experience.I see firsthand what today's students do not have access to.It is a tale of two cities and grossly unfair. But all the nyc politicking will never fix it.I don't have answers, btw...except to start with high disciplinary standards. I just feel sad for the students and families who are economically unable to leave.I feel that we need to go the extra mile wherever we can to give as much as we can and then some.To walk away and not try imho is very heartless. It is only by the grace of God that we have what we have.I am in huge money debt because I help others. But that is my truth to live.My tda will cover my debts cuz I can't take it with me.I am grateful that I am not on the needing end. They’re not covering it because Democrats who falsely claim to be on the side of workers and the Republican establishment that hasn’t even bothered to pretend they care about workers don’t want them to cover it. Breaking Points’ Krystal Ball covered these strikes the other day. Went to my local medical office for a flu shot today. 74. 8:36 still can't provide any evidence that she's ever posted an intelligent thing on this blog. No intelligent opinions, no sources, no facts, no figures. Nothing, nada, zilch. Just her usual trolling. That's really the bottom line.

    ReplyDelete
  75. 8:36 "while the teachers do nothing". Many times it's the teachers themselves, you buffoon.

    ReplyDelete
  76. You can’t make a claim that teachers are allowing black kids to be called racial slurs and not back it up. Your insults don’t change the fact that you can’t back it up. You make shit up then act like a tweeting teenager when challenged. That’s your m.o.

    ReplyDelete
  77. 2:22 hey dummy, I wasnt speaking to you when I made the claim and I dont have to provide a nasty, divisive, self-admitted fraud like you squat. Im not your research assistant nor do I give a rat's azz what you believe. As if Im looking to convince an ignorant racist like you who will do nothing but make excuses in any case. Your m.o. is that to troll and ask questions while providing no proof of your own. Go fk yourself. I was tempted to provide and said fuck the troll, let her stay triggered. Not my problem that you havent learned how to Google.

    ReplyDelete
  78. 2;22 STILL cant point to one intelligent thing she's ever written. That's HER m.o. Trolling, whining and bytching.

    ReplyDelete
  79. @2:22 nobody can be that stupid that they havent heard of incidents all over the country involving slurs hurled at students and athletes. Maybe if you took your head out of your azz and your azz out of the Admin chair you wouldnt sound so ill-informed.

    ReplyDelete
  80. 2:20 "that"s your m.o.". Hahahah. This nut knows one anonymous poster from the next and oftentimes claims theyre all WFS. Lololol. Where's your proof of that claim. ROFLMAO

    ReplyDelete
  81. Oh no. Some kind of stupid Karen @2:22 is in a snit because she thinks that she can just demand that someone give her information as if they give two shits whether she believes it or not, or else! Dummy - teachers not only allow racial slurs, but are guilty of it themselves. Not only in the classroom but during sports. Many incidents are reported so you have to be some kind of stupid to not have ever heard of it. Seems like you're the one who keeps brining it up on multiple threads in your usual "tweeting teenager" trolling fashion.

  82. Fake news with no evidence, ho.

    ReplyDelete
  83. 11:29 triggered little troll doesnt even have enough creativity or intelligence to think of her own insults. At least you already admitted you're a HO. No respecting person would do that. Then again no self respecting would brag about collecting a check to do nothing. Cheap Ho.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Cheap trick @ 11:29. A bum wouldnt pay for it.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I love the smell of triggered lefty snowflakes in the morning. Time to go make progressive Meisha proud and pass these kids along for 128k plus per session. Meisha loves me even if you don’t.

    ReplyDelete
  86. 6:56 goes sniffing for me like a dog in heat first thing in the morning. Dreams about me. On your brain as you wake up eh? Very pathetic. Hahaha @ "Meisha". Nice to see you selling your soul and kissing all the black female's asses out of desperate fear of losing your $128k. No wonder you're so angry. She loathes, lazy HO frauds like you. Actually most decent people loathe lazy HO frauds.

    ReplyDelete
  87. No fear baby. My woke AP and I yuck it up and call each other girl. I’ve got her eating out of my hand like a good DOE pup.

    ReplyDelete
  88. @6:25 oh shut up, you sound stupid as fuck. You're as delusional about your work environment as you are about everything else. Fake news bitch.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Awww lefty pissed because I can play the woke game with a dumb as shit woke admin? Sounds like it. It’s their game. Don’t hate the player just because I’m better at it and have them gobbling up every ounce of bullshit I spew. Try electing people who will hire smart school administrators instead of the dumb fucks running my school.

    ReplyDelete
  90. 6:51 - Pissed because you're playing a woke game? You're dumber than I thought. No self-respecting real teacher has to, or wants to, grovel at the feet of admin and pretend they're somebody else to get their respect. What a pathetic life you live on a daily basis. It is FEAR you dumb fuck, because you said that's how you keep them at bay. You've rather live a lie. Many teachers do have to put up with Admin's bullshit but they'd rather take their lumps than grovel the way you do, OR here's an idea, they LEAVE, change schools, with their dignity intact. You've lied so long, and lost all dignity, you've lost all sense of reality. They don't even call you Ms. or Mr, they call you "girl", and you're so stupid, you think that's cute. Hahahaha. You're an embarrassment to the teaching profession is what it is. You brag about not teaching students and not caring but you claim you fool the "woke" admin by playing their game.

They have ZERO respect for you as an educator but as long as they listen to your bullshit you're OK. No wonder your students have no respect for you, since you have no respect for yourself. You are a self-admitted liar, and fraud, and as long as you play along what do they give a fuck if it's real or imagined. They have you under their thumb, right where they want you. YOU are part of the dumb fucks in that school.

    ReplyDelete
  91. That’s how dumb nyc woke administrators are. I’m a fucking moron with no respect as you say and I can still fool them.

    ReplyDelete
  92. @11:54am... you knocked it out the park. Leave the "genius" alone. They are doing all they can to avoid a mental breakdown. Remember it's likely that this really is their full capacity.

    ReplyDelete
  93. LOL @ waitingforsupport, you're right of course. The spineless idiot thinks she fools anyone when they play along with her silly games so that they can keep her on a lease. Pass the kids, don't complain, don't report to UFT, don't rock the status quo. But as long as they call her "girl" and she gets to pretend giggle like one of the teenage girls. BLECH. Very pathetic.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Oh, and btw waitingforsupport, that's even if her whole "play the game, fool the admin, comfy chair" bullshit is to be believed. She probably thought it would make her look clever, or smart, when it just made her look psychotic, and now she has to keep adding to it, making herself look even more stupid. Doesn't matter, true or false, it's their full mental and physical capacity.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Yes I'm obsessed with making anonymous strangers believe I'm a certain way even though I too am anonymous. You caught me. Now if only my dumb woke AP would catch on. But as horrible and dishonest and stupid as I am, I can still outwit the DOE pup who rates me because wokeness is the easiest language to learn.

    ReplyDelete
  96. @12:55 You really are too ridiculous for words. Yes, you ARE obsessed with making anonymous strangers believe you're a certain way because if you weren't you wouldn't be repeating your position ad nauseam over hundreds of posts, every day of the week, twice on Sunday.

It doesn't matter who you think you're outwitting, you're a fraud, a liar, a thief, and have traded whatever dignity you have, if you ever had any, for a rating, because you can't earn a good rating, or respect, honestly. You've admitted as much. So keep rambling trying to convince anonymous strangers that you're a certain way, while pretending you're so above it, because it's clear to all that you have no self-respect and prefer to live a lie every day. No different than a narcissist. You think your AP is dumb and woke, and yet you're the one who has to change who you are, pretend to believe what they believe, and accept whatever they dish out, to be around them. LOL.

"Narcissist: Since reality doesn’t support their grandiose view of themselves, narcissists live in a fantasy world propped up by distortion, self-deception, and magical thinking. They spin self-glorifying fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, attractiveness, and ideal love that make them feel special and in control. These fantasies protect them from feelings of inner emptiness and shame, so facts and opinions that contradict them are ignored or rationalized away. Anything that threatens to burst the fantasy bubble is met with extreme defensiveness and even rage, so those around the narcissist learn to tread carefully around their denial of reality."

  97. For the past couple of months, first thing in the morning, before brushing her teeth, first cup of coffee, or first class, @12:55 gets online and begins her obsession of trying to convince anonymous strangers that her admin refers to her as "girl" while she pretends to yukk it up for the price of an observation, now pretending she's doesn't care what anonymous strangers believe. Hahahahaha.

    ReplyDelete
  98. No. It’s not about you. It’s for people who may be new to this blog. They should see you can easily make your way in this system by simply being phony and telling the doe woke fools what they want to hear. Plus when someone tells me to stfu I always talk more. Deal with it, stranger.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Bravo, bravo. Listen to Republican @10:14 new teachers. She's going to school you on how to lie, cheat and steal your way through a fake teaching career. Take her advice on how to be a low-life who lives a lie. Or not. The psychopath thinks its something to stive for.

    ReplyDelete
  100. The perpetual victims think striving for anything is racist.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Stupid, lame comment @5:22. Don't speak you're embarrassing yourself. The only one playing and crying victim here is the one who's convinced herself that she's entitled to lie, cheat and steal because...it's everybody else's fault. Only a dumbass thinks that striving to be the biggest welfare queen type cheater in the DOE is something to brag about.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I lie. It’s not cheating if I follow the established set of rules or stealing if the boss willingly gives me what I want. And my boss does so with her boss’s blessing and so on and so on up the ladder to Meisha. They love me because I fake being woke and teach exactly what and how they want me to teach. Get some people who actually know how to teach in charge and I’ll be forced to change. Until then I’m playing the woke doe dummies like a fine tuned fiddle. I’m playing their game better than they do. Hate me all you want but the buck stops on Meisha’s desk. Start a petition to fire her sorry ass and I’ll sign it.
