I was a little surprised as I haven't heard much discussion at all that NYSUT has endorsed Kathy Hochul for governor.
Hochul called for a renewal of mayoral control. She doesn't deserve our endorsement.
UFT's Michael Mulgrew and others from the UFT hierarchy are on the NYSUT Board of Directors.
Did they bring this up with any of you in the schools?
Mulgrew works for the NY State and NY City Democratic Part bosses.
ReplyDeleteMulgrew does their bidding.
He uses us as pawns for his personal ambitions.
Mulgrew does not represent me. I do not pay dues to the UFT.
You are not in the UFT. You are useless in the election.
ReplyDeleteWe are never asked. Same old shit.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.theepochtimes.com/teachers-union-promotes-anti-misinformation-tool-sparking-left-wing-bias-concerns_4240376.html
ReplyDeleteSorry, I don't know where to post this.Randi is disgusting.we gotta get her out.dies she have a job forlife?
And the other candidates are? Astorino? And Hochul doesn’t need to be endorsed by the UFT .
ReplyDeleteJust focus on getting Mulgrew out.
Anybody know if we'll have an ERI this summer? The new Mayor wants to reduce city workforce after the old one and his cronies spent billions fattening central staff with high salaries. This would be good time to push for ERI! !
ReplyDeleteHonestly,
ReplyDeleteWe make ourselves nuts w these candidate and nothing ever changes.
Unfortunately, Mulgrew is not going anywhere whichever way you slice the pie.
ReplyDeleteHistory has shown that whatever Mulgrew touches turns to shit.
ReplyDeleteJames, is there any way to get Mulgrew to consent to a debate with Camille? Has that been done before in prior UFT elections?
ReplyDeleteI think that would help gain a good deal of exposure for her and UFC. Maybe a neutral platform can host the debate?
Who could be the moderator? Brian Lehrer?
Another consideration: what is the most important change that Camille is promoting? What is the key difference between her and Mulgrew?
This is something that needs to be clear in order to reach the more apathetic teachers who usually don’t vote.
Mulgrew usually does not answer emails himself nor many tough questions at town halls or DA so what makes you think he could debate? Randi had debates in her early years as UFT President. Mulgrew has never agreed to one and I doubt will.
ReplyDeleteLook at Mulgrew's and Camille's positions on mayoral control, class size being lowered in the contract, safe schools, ending Danielson, lobbying Albany to end the 2 for 1 strike penalties in the Taylor Law and much much more to see the differences between the two candidates on some of the issues.
Mulgrew will never agree to debate. He is only able to deliver pre-rehearsed messaging.
ReplyDeleteHe is not too bright. He is terrified of losing. Mulgrew has nothing to gain by agreeing to debate. The UFT is his politburo.
The key to winning against Mulgrew is to win the retiree vote and making significant improvement in active employee voter turnout. The challenge is huge.
Thank you for the reply. It’s a damned shame that Mulgrew is so evasive and unaccountable.
ReplyDeleteI understand most of the differences clearly. But can you please explain how they are different when it comes to safe schools?
What would safe schools look like for Camille? Mulgrew obviously just gives in to the whims of the Mayor.
James: So what happens if Camille does not overturn mulgrew but some others from ufc win spots? Will they stand up to mulgrew and have any power or is it as if if camile can't beat him, it is business as usual? Ie what if Lydia wins a spot? Can other winners be in positions to make inroads? When is the election after this one? Ie how many years comprise a term?
ReplyDeleteVery good questions, 6:06. If we win the high schools and middle schools, we will get people like Lydia on the Executive Board and that should make Unity/Mulgrew a little more responsive. The next election is 2025. This election is different because Mulgrew-Unity have angered their base, the retirees, and the handling of the pandemic put member health at risk so he could protect his dues. As for getting the word out, many of us are trying on blogs and on twitter and facebook. We need your help.
ReplyDeleteJames:I assume I am correct that mulgrew has a salary.how does it benefit him personally to have more dues payers? I would have thought that our power was in our numbers, but since he gave us away, I am not understanding the politics.Also. if he wants our votes/dues so badly, why would he continue to brazenly anger his base? I am thinking that nobody will hear about ufc and they won't get the votes due to them being unknown.Again, I wouldn't have heard of any of them if I hadn't found this blog.i imagine that is likely true for most.mt retiree friends don't know about this blog or ufc unless I forward posts.
ReplyDeleteMore questions for James:do other caucuses receive any funding from our dues? If not, they need funding to become more visible.as I haven't read uft papers in awhile, I'm asking if they are allowed to advertise there.i seem to remember that they did decades ago.i think Randi is more dangerous.when are those elections held?
ReplyDeleteJames:another question! What about the people out on leaves due to the mandate? If they are off payroll, they aren't paying dues.that likely means that they can't vote?
ReplyDeleteBut even if we get them in hs and middle schools, they can't outvote all those loyal chapter leaders.maybe you can educate is on the hierarchy of our union.i know there is an exec board and chapter leaders.not sure about the power structure.eerily troubling about biden.comparing mulgrew to that skeleton who thinks he arose from the dead.but at least some courts rule against his overteach. What are the checks and balances at uft?
ReplyDelete10:11 I highly doubt that there will be any incentive. Between retirements, people quitting because of shitting work conditions now worse than ever because of covid, Newer teachers quitting because the pay is terrible for doing the work of 3 people and don't want to suffer at the hands of the DOE and abusive admins for the next 30 years, so no retirement incentive.
ReplyDeleteMore dues payers means more patronage which means more loyalty to Unity-Mulgrew. Mulgrew makes over $300,000 a year just like the Chancellor.
ReplyDeleteThis blog gets thousands of page views each day. We need all of you to spread the word about Camille and UFC.
Each caucus gets an ad in the NY Teacher and we can send it on email too.
If you are on an unpaid leave, send the UFT $25 and you stay a member while on leave and can vote.
The only check on Mulgrew-Unity is the election. Ballots will be mailed in early April to your homes.
People here constantly complain. Now here is your chance to do something more.
James--
ReplyDeleteYou are far better informed than I am and that is one of many reasons why I appreciate this blog. Therefore, I am requesting a favor for all of us who want to get rid of Mulgrew but lack the verbal ammunition to explain why.
When we discuss things with our colleagues, could you provide a concise list of everything Mulgrew has done that was either detrimental, feckless, etc.?
If "everything" is too much, how about we borrow one from David Letterman back in the day and have a Top Ten Reasons to vote against Mulgrew?
I want to be more fact-based without hyperbole than just telling people I feel he is arrogant and he makes shoddy backroom deals without consulting the membership.
It can even be a separate thread which I recommend.
Thank you.
PS-- FWIW, I wish the caucus didn't use the acronym UFC. It's like using MLB or NFL. Yet, Camille et.al. will have my vote.
300K plus is Mulgrew’s salary —would that be the same for any future UFT President or would that new person take a cut in salary?
ReplyDeleteCamille can take a pay cut.
ReplyDeleteCamille should absolutely NOT take a pay cut. A woman should not be paid less than a man for the same job. No way.
ReplyDeleteOkay that would be up to the newcexecutive board.
