ADAMS SUPPORTS MEDICARE ADVANTAGE FOR MUNICIPAL RETIREES

 February 6, 2022

NEW YORK – New York City Mayor Eric Adams today issued the following statement on the NYC Medicare Advantage Plus Plan:
“City retirees have earned their benefits, and, as mayor, I’m committed to delivering for them. The NYC Medicare Advantage Plus Plan unveiled last year — the product of many months of negotiations between the city and the Municipal Labor Committee, representing more than 100 unions — will continue to offer premium-free health coverage to retirees, along with new and enhanced benefits. That is why after a careful and thorough review by my administration, I am announcing my support for this plan. I believe the new program will be in the best interest of retirees and the city’s taxpayers, who stand to save $600 million annually.
“As a blue-collar mayor and someone who himself will collect municipal retiree benefits, I am sympathetic to those who have voiced concerns about how this plan will affect their coverage. Our administration will continue to work to assuage these concerns before and after the plan is implemented. To all retirees: We assure you that the city has had, and will continue to have, your best interests at heart.”
Retiree Group Responds:

We are disappointed that Mayor Adams came out in support of the proposed Medicare Advantage plan -- without ever meeting with retirees or hearing about alternatives. We understand how tempting it must be to "find" $600 million in new revenues; but it shouldn't be on the backs of senior citizens and disabled first-responders.
The City actually knows this is an inferior plan, which is why they are forcing retirees to pay thousands of dollars annually to opt-out and keep their current insurance.
We are fully confident that the proposed plan is a violation of both law and past contracts, and we look forward to seeing the City in court.

  2. Adams is an ignorant racist POSSunday, February 06, 2022 1:56:00 PM

#1 The mayor is a racist asshole. He should have been removed from office. His recent comments(Dec 2019) show his true colors. Adams isn't even man enough to own his own words. Instead he tries to deflect and say the work cracker was used in the question he was answering.
Think about it. If you were asked a question using a word you don't agree with,
you would either address the word as wrong, thus calling out the person using the word
or at least answer without using the word.

POS Adams did neither. He in fact added to it and tried to show his superiority to the crackers.
ADAMS SHOWED HIS TRUE SELF AND SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM OFFICE. THIS SHOULD NOT BE IGNORED AS IT IS NY MANY news outlets -NY1 etc.

Point is ADAMS SHOULD BE GONE AND we should be talking to a mayor who is not racist and may care about teachers health and safety again as we know POS ADAMS does not.

ADAMS lies and promotes 20% of children are tested for covid while it's less than 5% in many schools.

We should all fighting for his removal because he is a racist. If we accomplish this we will be able to talk to a mayor who may care about our health and future health needs.

    1. Removal??? On what grounds? Use of the word cracker. Oh please. The man just took office.

    2. Yes he should be removed from office. If a white person or politician used the N word he would have his a$$ out the door. Why should this be any different? It is a racial epithet directed towards white people. Why do individuals such as this or even Whoopi get a pass? Enough said.

    3. Yeah, really, all those centuries of the dehumanizing effects of the word cracker have left me struggling to eat a Ritz. And I can't even look at Saltines anymore. It's a real struggle.

Adams is talking trash. The whole cost saving scheme needs to be analyzed for the cost savings that are bein imposed unfairly on retirees. Mulgrew is in on this scam.

  4. Teaching in NYC is going to become a 3-5 year gig. People used to hang in for the pension and medical. Now it takes 15 years to get a crappy medical plan and longer for a crappy pension that you have to pay into all while doing the work of 3 people??

People are going to realize bonuses and a self funded 401k which you can control yourself is a better deal. Not to mention being about to work from home, respect and higher pay!

Also, if Adams extends the school day and year more with retire, leave and get out for their health and sanity.

Teaching in NYC is going to be just an in between gig. It is not career worthy any longer.

  5. Exactly how does NY City save $600 million each year without denying access, benefits, necessary procedures and choice to retirees?

  6. i just PRAY for an age 50 buyout from adams- get rid of us old folks who cant teach kids anything.

  7. The Medicare Advantage plan is inferior and the city knows it.
If anything, it about taking "advantage" of passive retirees who do
    not fight this scam.

  8. Adams must think retiree teachers are "crackers".

    ReplyDelete
  9. How can a savings of 600 million dollars result in better medical coverage? This city scam is better and more underhanded than all the nuisance phone call scams that all retired seniors receive on a daily basis.

  10. 2:14- There needs to be Equity stop with the double standard. Cracker is an offensive, insult.
It was said and meant as an insult. It is clear in the video. All people need to be treated the SAME when caught using racial slurs. Creating a double standard is WRONG.

You can keep working, living in NYC. You and POS Adams can recruit and hire all the people who
will want to work for crappy retirement medical all will denying he is a racist. Watch people will teach a few years and get out.

  14. James,
Curious as to why the "vacation" days, of which I received 5 days and 3hours despite having a positive CAR balance, are now reflected on pay stubs issued long before Covid.

  15. Adams is an ignorant racist POSSunday, February 06, 2022 8:26:00 PM

2:14 Yes-the word cracker is offensive. Adams had choices

He could have called out the person asking the question and say it is not the word to use

or he could have answered the question without repeating the word cracker.

Instead, he used it and fed off it making himself sound superior.

Adams is a POS. He should be removed. A racial slur is a racial slur. Don't excuse or deny it.
It is offensive. Get him out and we can find someone else who may care about teachers lives and medical costs.

  16. 4:32 You are an ignorant racist.
There is so much to criticize Adama for: He is a Bloomberg allie, is corrupt and anti -teacher . However you prefer to spout your ignorance

  17. Adams supports saving the City $600 million dollars by reducing post retirement medical costs. He does not give a rat's ass that he is cheating retirees. He does not give a rat's ass that the city is acting with criminality by reneging on its commitments to union retirees.
For Adams, whatever saves the city money is worth lying about and cheating union retirees; to hell with integrity and keeping commitments! This will have to be settled in court.

    1. Put your money where your mouth is. Go to nycretirees.org and contribute to the Medicare (Dis)Advantage court case. The outcome for retirees will ultimately affect all in-service people. And then contribute to/and vote for ufcuft.vote for fresh leadership...

  18. Adams should be removed. Imagine if a teacher used the N word at a student or administrator. They would be fired. Adams is a racist!
He is fit to be cancelled.

  19. The big takeaway is that Adams is a corporate politician who cares nothing about teachers and their health plans. The fact that he is a democrat and is black is not important. He could be a white republican. Lets stop the racist attacks

  20. Medicare DisAdvantage Plan will shift costs onto fixed income retirees by establishing copays for every Medical Procedure.

  21. I am 4:32.NOT RACIST at all.we agree he is shit.my suggestion and anger comes from people voting for someone solely due to race and/or blind loyalty to a polotical party.im saying people keep doing this and will continue this.so where is there a glimmer of hope for NY?I am saying that Pepitone wanted to debate Adam's and he refused.Pepitone was level headed.Adams cares more about animals than city workers.(I love animals too).frustrated cuz u feel trapped due to the hardship that leaving would cause. We can pull our COPE contributions.not much money, but sends a message.

  22. I dont know anyone who voted for Adams because of his race. Did you actually think Pepitone had a chance?

  23. 8:28 you sound like a neo-racist. A neo racist sees racism in everything. Order vanilla instead of chocolate? The neo racist calls you racist. Take offense to racial slurs? The neo racist calls you racist. Can’t think of a winning argument? Just call your opponent racist. It’s what the neo racists do.

  24. No chance because the media made sure of that. But I heard him on twitter.he seemed level headed and caring.i know people who didn't vote for him because they said he didn't have a chance. I know people who voted for Adam's thinking he would be better than diblockhead.it looks like they were dreaming. Between biden, hochul, and Adam's, ny is in the icu.

  25. Only 23% of voters cast a ballot for the election. It's almost worth saying, do you know anyone who actually voted.

  26. NYC is a union town. Adams just put the final nail in his coffin for any chance of re-election. He will be hated by the very cops that he claims are "my cops".

  28. Currently, retirees with Medicare plans must pay out-of-pocket for Part D coverage. Under Medicare Advantage, they will not have to pay out-of-pocket for Part D.

    Is this correct?

Not that this would justify having a swiss cheese health care plan that won't pre-authorize necessary medical procedures.

  29. Just waiting to see what changes in Healthcare coverage costs for in-service members with Mulgrew bargaining with the city in a couple of months—and how it ties into to a new contract in the fall.

  30. Essentially the answer is no Quinn. This is from the UFT:

Your prescription drug benefits will continue
The prescription drug benefits of Medicare-eligible UFT retirees
currently in an EmblemHealth plan will not change when the
NYC Medicare Advantage Plus plan takes effect on April 1.
New York City and the Municipal Labor Committee sent a letter
about prescription drug benefits dated Jan. 21 to the more than
250,000 Medicare-eligible municipal retirees, including UFT
retirees. The letter largely does not apply to UFT retirees.
Medicare-eligible UFT retirees get their prescription drug
coverage by purchasing an optional rider through their NYC
health plan. If you have an optional rider now through your NYC
health plan, you will automatically be enrolled in the optional
rider with the new NYC Medicare Advantage Plus plan. You do
not need to take any action.
