Carl Cambria runs the UFT Election Committee that is stacked with Unity Caucus members. Carl gave a succinct answer to Camille's email challenging Michael Mulgrew to a debate. The request was originally made via email to Mulgrew on March 1. Mulgrew didn't respond so Cambria was notified.
Hello,
There is no debate scheduled.
Sincerely,
Carl Cambria
Manhattan Borough Representative
United Federation of Teachers
Does anyone want to help get the word out how Mulgrew won't allow Camille to talk at the Delegate Assembly and now his caucus is officially refusing a presidential candidate debate?
Putin's secretary would have answered it the same way.
ReplyDeleteOr closer to home… Jen Psaki would answer the same way. There is no upside for Mulgrew in debating. And if the membership votes him in again then I guess open debate isn’t important to the members either.
ReplyDeleteThis is massive news. Mulgrew needs to answer as to why he is refusing to debate his presidential opponent. The vast majority of UFT members are unaffiliated and want info more than ever on who to vote for and a debate is the perfect answer. This is a slap in the face to the claim that, "Unity does the Work".
ReplyDeleteMulgrew does what he thinks will get him the win. He is ducking the debate for two reasons. 1) He knows that Eterno would blow him away in a debate. 2) He has nothing to gain by debating because he knows his flunkies are already going to vote for him. Thus, he is both afraid AND lazy. I guess Unity is against uniting members after all.
ReplyDeleteI know firsthand that debates are very important—especially when it comes to fishing -in particular down south.
ReplyDeleteAs a child of 6, my grandfather told me that ‘you must put debate on the dehook in order to catch defish.’
Now that’s advice that is priceless.
Question: How does a nycdoe employee get a position with the UFT? Can you apply or do you need to know someone? Thanks
ReplyDeleteNepotism and patronage. Our former (now retired) chapter leader works for UFT now and he was absolutely useless as HS chapter leader at Grady sad to say. But he let contractual violations slide, got an amenable schedule in return, healthy stipend, and didn't make waves (or support the members). His reward is a cake job with UFT.
ReplyDeleteYou elected him as Chapter Leader and re-elected him many times. So how stupid are you?
DeleteJames, you are so focused on this debate and UFT election that you are ignoring the rising COVID cases. Look how Shanghai does it right compared to NYC.

The UFT knows that Mulgrew would lose the debate.
ReplyDeleteThey are counting on the ignorance of UFT to sustain the status quo.
Sadly, time is running out because high inflation is eroding your standard of living.
Choose life and vote against Mulgrew and his Unity hacks
If it were me, I'd send that denial to Errol Louis (NY 1) and to NY1 education reporter. I would request to be on the show to answer all questions and even request call in questions. You must bulldoze through the gatekeeper when they do not act with integrity.
ReplyDeleteNY1 Yes, and The NY POST members need to see this
ReplyDeletePlease help send it out to media contacts. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWhat has Carl Cambria and other UFT leadership done to prevent unfair firings of teachers?
ReplyDeleteI contacted NY1 for the 3rd time re: debate. Hopefully if more people do it, they will see there is a demand for this.

2:49pm, we have a chapter leader similar to that in our school too.
ReplyDeleteJust curious—do other city labor unions have debates among candidates for president—are there term limits—are members allowed to vote in blocks for one party?
ReplyDeleteI sent it to Jacobin magazine. But when they heard that the UFT allowed hundreds of teachers to be fired for noncompliance, they asked if the UFT is still an actual union or just an appendage of NYC bureaucracy and the whims of authoritarian mayors?
ReplyDeleteMaybe Bloomberg.com might be more receptive to this story.
TWU has had debates as did the UFT in two prior elections.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the information 4:49 PM Message sent.
ReplyDeleteLOL @ 7:40. One big lie.
ReplyDeleteTake 3 minutes and send a msg to NY1

I just did it, it takes 1 or 2 minutes.
ReplyDeleteWhat’s the lie? That 740 sent message to Jacobin or that the UFT allowed teachers to be fired for refusing a leaky vaccine that can have serious side effects? This union deserves to dwindle and die. Mulgrew will get another chance to kill it when he wins with 70% or more.
ReplyDelete8:29 - that Jacobin responded with "they asked if the UFT is still an actual union or just an appendage of NYC bureaucracy and the whims of authoritarian mayors?". Get real, grow a brain. But no use arguing with someone who posts "allowed teachers to be fired", as if Mulgrew has authority over the Mayor.
ReplyDelete8:29 - the UFT didn't allow anything. You think they asked Mulgrew if it was ok if the teachers were fired? How exactly did the UFT allow teachers to be fired? You think the Principals were going to allow them in the building on Mulgrew's say-so? What could Mulgrew do under those circumstances? Please share.
