The UFT is not a dictatorship although sometimes the leadership acts like it is.
Some of us came together to form UFT Members for Premium-Free Quality Healthcare.
We are demanding a full member vote on any healthcare changes for retirees and/or active members.
A petition has been started.
If 10% of the membership ask for it in writing, the UFT Constitution would mandate a member referendum.
All those who say there is nothing we can do about anything, here is your chance to step up and reach out to everyone you know to sign on.
Mulgrew should resign and take a job with Aetna's division of product development.
ReplyDeleteI am sure it would be his dream job. Clearly , Mulgrew is not interested in leading the UFT.
Why not a petition for decertifying the union while we're at it?
ReplyDeleteLet's see how we do with the referendum petition, Peter.
ReplyDeleteJames, would you please provide us with a verbatim quotation of the provision of the UFT constitution to which you are referring? Thanks very much.
ReplyDeleteCan this petition get posted to the NYC Teachers and other UFT Members FB group?
ReplyDeleteArticle V, SECTION 10 of the UFT Constitution:
ReplyDelete“At the written request of one-third (1/3) of the entire membership of the Executive Board or of ten percent (10%) of the membership of
this organization, the Executive Board shall submit to a referendum vote any matter except a proposed amendment to this Constitution and matters relating to the admission, suspension or expulsion of members."
Thank you. So just somewhere between 30,000 and 40,000 signatures.
ReplyDeleteNo.About 190,000 ballots went out in the last UFT election. 10% would be 19,000. If we get near 10,000, we will make an even bigger push. This is basic organizing. We need everyone who reads this to help out to have any chance. Get involved, please.
ReplyDeleteYou're right. No wonder I failed math.
ReplyDeleteLOL Marian.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is you did just fine in math but just missed this one.
ReplyDeleteWe (6) signed the petition.
ReplyDeleteDoes this petition jive with what the Retirees are doing on FB. They are about to introduce legislation to the City Council that will restore our choices.
ReplyDeleteCarol
Carol, Good to hear from you. Maryanne's organization supports the petition. It fits in with what they are doing. She promoted it on her Facebook update video on Friday evening.
