It's not even about defending ATRs, it's about defending the future of teachers. Unity had no right destroying transfer seniority rights. Whether a teacher had one year in the system, 5, 10 or 15, it's about what the future holds if there was ever another major budget crisis again. Teachers today have no idea what happened in the 70s.
It can't be possible that all ATRs are misfits, and it will be hard to judge that if you are only in a school a week trying hard to get a handle on a class that's been through so many other weekly teachers before you. Education becomes a joke because no one is taking the responsibility to make sure our students have continuity of instruction. It tells our students the City doesn't care about you.
Then there are the principals that are out of control. The ones that make coming to school even for inservice teachers a horror. We don't see the DoE doing anything to rid the schools of these maniacs.
Today, NYC has a new mayor and a new schools chancellor. That is very good news. Bloomberg and Klein/ Walcott are out. But, their disruptive legacy of destroy and rebuild with half baked plans will reverberate for some time. Cuomo is on board with the charters. Somehow, I hope it's possible that he can be defeated in November,,, but not by a Republican clone. Not too likely, at the moment. Eva, et al, have a strong following that is growing by her crack PR teams. We need to get the word out stronger of the misinformation that she spreads. Like her reluctance to take special needs, ESL, and to get rid of any kid who they deem not a good fit. Public education is education for all. She is purely private with public funding. A disgrace. We are one union. We are all professionals. Such as in a family, we all will not agree on everything. I.e., our contract. BUT, would you rather work for Eva? I think not.
Now you guys are using the "eva" scare tactic? Remember - you guys stood silently by while the state legislature gave away the store to charters - which by the way benefits the UFT/Unity run charters. I'm amazed at the trust you have in Farina and de Blasio - who you opposed. And remember the days of Farina sitting next to Joel Klein? And you trust them? Remember Dinkins who called for teachers to give up their preps? The UFT didn't support him the 2nd time which gave us Giuliani. None of these guys can be trusted. The only thing we have is the contract. And you put noting in it to provide protection from this guy now and Eva in the future. Basically you are arguing against yourself. If Eva should become mayor because of this contract you all are dead.
"In his State of the City speech last month, Bloomberg called for a $20,000 merit pay proposal for teachers rated “highly effective” two years in a row. On January 20, in a speech in Washington, D.C., Bloomberg said he was confident that if New York City teachers were allowed to decide the matter for themselves, they would support it.
UFT President Michael Mulgrew said: “Delegates representing every part of the teachers union got a chance to have their voice heard on this issue and their message is clear — individual merit pay hasn’t worked and doesn’t work for schools and kids.”"
Mulgrew said that in February 2012 and after two years, now he calls it "career ladders". So if it's covertly renamed it will supposedly work. I think NOT!
To Ed Notes, online: Who are you referring to with "you guys"? Personally, I am a NYC teacher for ten a dues paying member to the UFT, but not a CL or a delegate. I am engaged in this debate because it affects me, my work/ city and my family. Farina as I understand it took the job and later resigned due to incompatibility with Klein. Listen, I know this, Bloomberg and Klein were horrible. I hope that De Blasio will be a good and fair leader. If he is, and Farina is, things will improve. I also agree with you that trust has to be earned. De Blasio and Farina just began, so they have a clean slate. As for protections in the contract what would you like to have seen included that isn't?
I am voting NO to this contract. How can we give the city an interest free loan on the 4% and 4%? Would the city give me or you an interest free loan? We been waiting almost five years for the previous pattern (4% and 4Z%) to be in our paychecks. It is disappointing and shocking that we have to wait another six years for a total of 11 years to catch up to the other unions on the previous pattern. Mr. Mulgrew is disingenuous and has poorly served us. This is only the pay part of the contract. I have not even discussed the ATR's and the 200 experimental schools. We do not have stakeholder buy in and we have had everything shoved down our throats for years. Ironically the last five years have been very difficult with mountains of paperwork and a lousy evaluation imposed us. Our union leadership is incompetent and out of touch to the everyday struggles of teachers. Why doesn't Mr. Mulgrew teach a class so that he can be subjected to VAM and Danielson? Is it beneath him to do this?
If teachers vote for this contract, then we truly deserve everything that has been done to us the last few years and will continue. The contract reinforces the damage.
Do you know how many horrendous, abusive, bullying principals BloomKlein left behind in their little minefield? teachers are getting killed by these swine. At the very least the contract could have put in some protections for people under assault. The grievance procedure it worse than when I started in 1967. Class sizes haven't changed since then either.
A No to the Contract fund should be created if the contract is ratified Everyone who votes no to this contract can take the salary increases,$ 1000, lump sum retro and put in this fund. The money can be donated to the homeless, used for attorneys for ATR, s etc
