I just asked my wife if she has received an email from the UFT about Teacher's Choice for the upcoming school year. She told me she has still not seen a text or email on the start date for spending this year or the allocation amount. Therefore, I just checked the Teacher's Choice page on the UFT website and here is exactly what it says:
Please check back soon for information on funding for the 2019–20 school year.
As we said, spending usually starts on August 1. Why should the UFT or DOE announce when teachers can make purchases and this year's amount? Because it's August 19!
We do know the City Council approved Teacher's Choice funding in the current budget. We have no idea why it seems to take longer and longer each year to figure out when teachers and other school based UFT members can start spending for supplies and how much the allocation will be as well as then to update the website. UFT has no shortage of well paid staff nor does the DOE.
If the amount and date when spending can start is already out there and I missed it, please send us the information.
Update August 28th. The allocation for 2019-20 has finally been released. We have a new posting.
Typical uft, typical doe. But nothing we can do...
ReplyDeleteJust head over to your local school’s dumpster and retrieve all the new supplies they chuck out with the trash, it sure beats Staples.
ReplyDeleteLOL Bronx ATR.
ReplyDeleteWe got bigger fish to fry such as wondering if admins are going to be abusing the new evaluation system by observing tenured teachers more than 2 times. (Even though they are allowed to). If we start getting more than 2 observations starting in Sept, the UFT will once again prove itself as a worthless entity.
ReplyDeleteThey can still observe as much as they like. No maximum number of observations put in. We said this at the time of the contract that a two observation MINIMUM was a small step forward but no great gain. It is a gain because two is in contract so most administrators won't bother doing more for most teachers. Also, they could do two since 2015 under state law.
ReplyDeleteJames, they could not do two since 2015 since our contract said we had to have 4. The UFT completely sold us out on that due to the fact that under state law were were allowed to have 2 but the UFT/DOE still made us all have 4. I am cautiously optimistic that most admins will stick with 2 observations this year but then again, ya' never know.
ReplyDeleteYou are right on the UFT selling us out on evaluation. That said, since state law supercedes our contract, state took ratings with two observations from NYC. Nobody complained if rating was effective or highly effective. I know this happened to real teachers.
ReplyDeleteJames: State law may supercede our contract but it is was our sellout contract that forced admins to come observe us at least 4 times since 2015. The UFT is 100% to blame on this. I will NEVER forgive them for that fact.
ReplyDeleteMoney money money is all sjws here talk about it seems.
ReplyDeleteI'm walking the walk and giving mine to Antifa and blm.
Anyone getting a sick feeling about returning to school? I'm not sure I can do this again. Life is too short to have this dread but I don't think I'm financially able to retire. The hegemonic Narrative of the doe and my sjw colleagues is just too hateful towards people who look like me....
ReplyDeleteIf James allows maybe we can use some space here for some commiseration and tips for surviving our immanent return?
Drink. A lot.
ReplyDelete@ 8:54 for someone like me at least that's not an option.
ReplyDeletei'm trying churchillian determination in the face of the void spiced with buddhism/stoicism.
i have less time than op; don't think i'll make 20.
Thank the lord for THC vaping
ReplyDeleteIf your admin hits you 2 times like they should you’re lucky..I was rated highly effective 2 years in a row and because I’m not tenured(this year is my year) I’m now stuck with 3 informal and 1 formal under the new contract. Thanks uft!
ReplyDeleteThe nyc uft union has been selling us out ever since Alberta shanker. He must be rolling in his grave. How far will we let them destroy teachers pride. Things have gotten so complicated. Been waiting for LODI case to finish going over a whole year. The union did not send in the paper work to the board. Every time you want to talk to a lawyer from uft reps don't like that. Can't wait to retire this year. Just remember the UFT sets up the school calendar and plays it from doe.
ReplyDeleteEverything the real union fought for is slowly being given back.
I am starting to order for the year in the hope that Teacher’s Choice dates will include August.

Oh, wow! Are teachers allowed to do this during work now?
Many, many teachers are completely addicted to Xanax. Medical marijuana is much safer and just like any anti-anxiety medication, you can take it at work. I wouldn’t advertise it though because half the staff would be trying to mooch or buy some from you. It’s very expensive and it’s much cheaper to buy from an illegal source. There’s a 10th grader that goes to each room third period to make deliveries. The kids just text their orders on their phones. No one, including the principal gives two craps. This kid goes through scanning with loads of it each morning. In ten years the schools will be serving it to the kids with free lunch. I’m not joking about any of this, btw.
ReplyDeleteAnother city, Las Vegas, goes on strike on September 10, but why would we? Our situation is so good, right? right?
ReplyDeleteHaha, 2 more cities going on strike. I guess this job isnt so good after all.
ReplyDeleteThis is why the uft is a joke, people posting on FB how they are forced to come in for free the week before school starts to setup their classrooms. The said everybody does it for free. What?
ReplyDeleteThese people are idiots, being taken advantage of, and the uft is complicit, as usual.
ReplyDeleteJust wondering... is it kosher for a principal to allot no time on 9/3 or 9/4 for classroom set up, but instead offer to pay a few hours training rate if you want to come in the week before? Nothing being offered if you try and do it after hours on 9/3 or 9/4. Thanks
The teachers in my school spend the week before setting up classrooms without any pay! I’ve done it for 17 years!
I go in the week before with zero pay.
We usually come in the week before for FREE!
Ok I am elementary I don’t know anyone who doesn’t come in and set up their classroom the week before. If we got paid for this it would be nice
I guess this is par for the uft course. What happens when you don’t have a UFT rep at your school? We are beginning the year without one. The majority of our teachers are not tenured and have been advised not to take on this role. No tenured teachers are stepping forward. All details welcome. TYIA.
ReplyDeleteTo 12:13 PM Why in the world would anybody pay you to come in and fix up your classroom when you are all doing it for free.?
ReplyDeleteSomeone needs to step up and take the chapter leader job.
ReplyDeleteWe are pathetic, just like the job.
ReplyDeleteWhy would anyone take the CL job? UFT brass have made it abundantly clear, *you* *are* *on* *your* *own*. I hope they change their attitudes. People deserve a strong chapters. But, UFT has not been backing us up. They act like we work for them, and I’m sick of that attitude from 52 Broadway. Give us the tools to enforce the contract. I’m sick of Mulgrew shifting the blame at DAs to chapters who don’t do this or that. Why does he think chapters are so week? We’ve seen the folks with fancy titles in the union leave the rank and file twisting in the wind over and over again, C’mon, UFT, show some spine and you will inspire some rank and file leadership. This managed retreat strategy ain’t gonna cut it.
ReplyDeleteBack in the day, chapter leaders were respected by admins. Today, they have a giant target on their backs. Simply read the NY Post and you will see case after case of chapter leaders being fired for doing their jobs. (Whistle blowing, etc) I was nominated chapter leader once 6 years ago and said "Hell no!".
ReplyDeleteRisk taking is necessary for unions to grow. If we stick together, the risks are minimized.
ReplyDeleteI said hell yes when asked to take the chapter leader job. I thought about quitting when Randi Weingarten, Joel Klein and Michael Bloomberg took away so many of our rights in 2005 but I didn't and I am glad I fought on in the anti-teacher environment. Many were helped and Jamaica lasted as a good place for teachers to teach and students to learn for a couple of more years than it would have.
ReplyDeleteStay in the union...I wonder if the contract the mta rejected is like ours. What a joke. Yeah, right.
ReplyDeleteAccording to Barclays teacher supply store, Teacher Choice allotation spending begun August 1. They, however, want you to sign an affidavit and show official DOE ID for your purchases. Insane! Starting off the school year on negative note!
ReplyDeleteFyi, a friend called the uft today and was told its $250 again, it just hasn't been announced or allocated but amount is "substantiated".
ReplyDeleteTeachers' rights and interests must be 100% protected. They are the future of children and have a profound impact on the development of society. Not only should the government protect the rights and interests of teachers, but also schools should help teachers as much as possible
