RICHMOND, VIRGINIA SCHOOLS TAKING NEXT WEEK OFF FOR MENTAL HEALTH; SCRANTON, PA TEACHERS READY TO STRIKE

Something's gotta give. Teachers are frustrated. Richmond, Virginia has a novel way of dealing with teacher burnout.

From Yahoo News:

A school district in Virginia announced Wednesday it would suspend its operations for the first week in November, including two days "in the interest" of its faculty's "mental health."

Richmond Public Schools will close Nov. 1-5, as teachers and staff are at risk of burnout, according to Superintendent Jason Kamras.

"Over the last couple of weeks, I've heard directly from dozens of teachers, principals, and support staff about how stressful this year has been," Kamras said. "Many have shared that they're on the brink of burning out — even leaving — and it's only October."

Furthermore, the school district will bring in 100 new lunchtime monitors and reassign over $3 million to expand relief for the mental health of students, Richmond Public Schools officials said.

At least they are trying to be supportive.

Here in NYC, teachers are being tasked with assessing the mental health of students. The UFT supported these useless tests but now they are opposing them.

Out in Scranton, Pennsylvania, the teachers have had enough after four years without a contract. They are ready to strike next week.

This is from Fox 56:

Lackawanna Co. (Wolf) — Hundreds of teachers from the Scranton School district are planning on taking to the picket lines next week.

The Scranton Federation of Teachers President Rosemary Boland explaining the decision to strike comes from many parts.

Including topic issues of a beginning salary that hasn’t gone up since 2017, healthcare plans and teachers being forced to give up their prep period due to lack of staffing.

“Enough is enough. After 4 years, after 4 years the SFT must take a stand. We have to support our own members. We have to support our students and their families," Boland explained.

We support the Scranton teachers and other workers on strike throughout the country.

  1. Damn James , you acknowledge Virginia but our brothers and sisters that supported the UFT having to make in decision in two weeks about the vaccine . You’ll end up not posting this , you’re heartless pretending to care about teachers .

    1. 4:19, I posted my position supporting the vaccine mandate but acknowledging that there need to be exemptions. For example, a woman whose doctor after having a terrible reaction to shot one and having had COVID already, was advised by her doctor not to get vaccinated. She should not be off payroll.

  2. Maybe they need a break.

Democrat gubernatorial candidate for Virginia Terry McAuliffe has been campaigning with his “great friend” and rabid homophobe Wes Bellamy. But diversity and tolerance, right?

This is after McAuliffe staffers dressed as white supremacists just to gain a few votes.

  3. TWO POINTS: 1) DOE would never even consider closing the nation's largest babysitting service. 2) Even if they did, we would have to make up the days by taking off days from our other vacations to make up the state mandated time.

  4. You mean the left wing union that supports dems who start this stuff?

Virginia Democrat operatives dressed up as Neo-Nazis holding tiki-torches today to smear their opponent and attempted to pass it off as actually happening.

Certainly James would denounce this, right?

  5. #1 we are babysitters first and formost. #2 We are now social workers and counselors given the task of assessing students social emotional needs #3 We have to teach the students and help them catch up.

When is the doe going to hire the counselors they said they were going to or are we going to get their salary?

  6. Pretty sad how soft some in society have become. The generation that needs its safe spaces and emotional support animals to deal with the trials of life. Speech is violence and if you dare go against our woke ideology we'll have you canceled, banished from society. These people are SICK

  7. Question: Are these teachers getting paid for these days off? Seems like 5 free sick days. Also, who takes care of the children and how will they get a hot lunch?

  8. Wonder if our garbage will finally be collected tomorrow morning or if Brooklyn sanitation workers will continue to strike in solidarity with the novel coronavirus

  9. God bless those freedom loving Brooklyn sanitation workers. Wait til it’s EMS or FDNY with staff shortages. Solidarity with all unions workers or no union workers. Pick a side.

  10. @4:20 you're a liar. It was NOT McAuliffe staffers who dressed up as Neo-nazis. Those folks were trying to make the point that McAuliffe supports the Charlottesville white supremacists, and he probably does. Trump supporters started spreading the lie that it was McAuliffe who pulled the stunt and then got the Lincoln Project to take the blame, which is simply unsubstantiated nonsense.
