We have been asked numerous times in comments here for UFT presidential candidate Camille Eterno's position on vaccine mandates. Camille was quite clear on CNN last summer that she was in favor of the mandate for school staff.
Camille talked about public safety. She said she was afraid many more people will die. That has happened, unfortunately.
Camille was on CNN before the Omicron wave. The difference in deaths between vaccinated and boosted people as opposed to unvaccinated is huge. We saw this in the email summary of the NY Times sent this morning:
That is not a trivial difference. The Times does some analysis:
The average weekly chance that a boosted person died of Covid was about one in a million during October and November (the most recent available C.D.C. data). Since then, the chances have no doubt been higher, because of the Omicron surge. But they will probably be even lower in coming weeks, because the surge is receding and Omicron is milder than earlier versions of the virus. For now, one in a million per week seems like a reasonable estimate.
That risk is not zero, but it is not far from it. The chance that an average American will die in a car crash this week is significantly higher — about 2.4 per million. So is the average weekly death rate from influenza and pneumonia — about three per million.
Vaccine mandates save people's lives. The vaccines are no longer experimental either as Moderna now has full FDA approval just like Pfizer. While I don't fully agree with the Times that Omcron is milder because it is so much more contagious and US deaths are unacceptably high, mandates will keep more people alive.
Do you really think Camille should change her position based on the accepted sceintific and statistical record?
That said, both of us feel there should be reasonable exemptions and we have helped UFT members who should have been given exemptions but were denied.
“Vaccine mandates save people from themselves.”
ReplyDeleteRight...because they’ve done so well to stop the spread and hospitalizations of a disease with a 99% survival rate for most Americans.
“The vaccines are no longer experimental either as Moderna now has full FDA approval just like Pfizer.”
Comirnaty and Spikevax are not available in the US yet. All we have are the original vaccines whose 13 FDA required studies will be completed in 2027. Also, if you still think it’s not experimental, listen to the wise words of FDA panelist Dr. Ruben:
https://townhall.com/tipsheet/scottmorefield/2021/10/26/fda-panel-member-were-never-gonna-learn-about-how-safe-the-vaccine-is-until-we-start-giving-it-n2598090
“Do you really think Camille should change her position based on the accepted sceintific and statistical record?”
Yes. Use the full scientific record, not just NY Times data from pre-Omicron days.
How about this scientific record that mandaters conveniently ignore?

Full approval from FDA and you come up with more bullshit. Vote Mulgrew please. You deserve three more years of getting shit on.
ReplyDeleteGet some updated and relevant data to back your weak argument.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, it is a trivial difference
Using your outdated numbers,
Unvaccinated death rate: 7.8/100,000 = 0.000078
Well over 99% survival rate...
Maybe UFC can run on a Zero COVID plan like the CCP.
The table was in today's online Times. It explained that this was the latest monthly available from CDC. Please read the posting.

There have been how many deaths in China? maybe there plan works, and we shouldn't ridicule it while we are falling apart over here
Delete6:04 can't read a simple chart on deaths of vaccinated vs unvaccinated. These vaccines are remarkable. Mandates work. I agree he should vote Mulgrew.
ReplyDeleteThe data cited was from CDC. You would prefer some internet idiot. I agree you are the perfect Mulgrew supporter.
ReplyDelete2,500 deaths in the US yesterday from COVID We are gonna hit 900,000 soon. These people are fools. I am glad there is a mandate. Yes, the mandate saved many lives.
ReplyDelete"Moderna's is the second Covid-19 vaccine to receive full approval from the FDA. Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine, Comirnaty, was approved for use in people age 16 and older in August. The Pfizer vaccine is also authorized for use in individuals ages 5 to 15."
ReplyDeleteNow they will make up some shit that the EUA stuff is still out there so the FDA full license doesn't matter. #nti-vaxxers for Mulgrew. Assholes need to stick together.
I’m pretty sure this was addressed last week on this blog.
ReplyDeleteSome posters here either are dealing with dementia or their inability to use logic,

Why would the coerced into compliance vote for Mulgrew?
They are genuinely looking for a change, not the same madness.
879,971 – The number of deaths from the coronavirus across the United States, as of Jan. 31, according to the CDC.
ReplyDeleteVaccine mandates save people's lives.
ReplyDeleteJust ask Maddie de Garay.
Since data shows and cdc admits that Shor doesn't stop transmission, mandates need to be lifted.people can choose if they want to assume personal risk.they are no more of a danger to others than vaccinated people.the shit show needs to end.

A third dose improves protection against symptomatic infection and provides excellent protection against severe outcomes for both variants.

When are schools going remote? Lol.
Give it up already.
Yeah, Camille, Forget all the scientific evidence and change your vaccine position to pander to a few right-wing anti-vax assholes who won't do a thing for you anyway. Don't be stupid, Camille. Stick to your views.
ReplyDeleteI think these anti-vaxxers are secretly working for Mulgrew. I can be a conspiracy theorist too.

Don't expect me to print comments that cite questionable far right or left sources.
ReplyDeleteHere is what Media Bias Fact Check said about a source someone tried to use tonight:
A questionable source exhibits one or more of the following: extreme bias, consistent promotion of propaganda/conspiracies, poor or no sourcing to credible information, a complete lack of transparency, and/or is fake news. Fake News is the deliberate attempt to publish hoaxes and/or disinformation for profit or influence (Learn More). Sources listed in the Questionable Category may be very untrustworthy and should be fact-checked on a per-article basis. Please note sources on this list are not considered fake news unless specifically written in the reasoning section for that source.
Just for real educators that are anti vaxxers or anti -mandate people that are commenting on this blog. What if you asked your HS/college science students were asked to make a conclusion based on the factual data from this table? What would you expect them to conclude? Would you expect them to use logic—or just put down some BS response?
ReplyDeleteFree people have a right to take risks. If the vaccine does not prevent transmission it’s none of your business. Forcing someone to take on the risk of a vaccine side effect when the vaccine doesn’t prevent transmission is evil authoritarianism. It’s about control not health. When the republicans take control and bury you with their authoritarianism you’ll see the error of your ways.
ReplyDeleteNY Times is the clearing house of fake news designed to interest liberals.
ReplyDeleteBe careful when quoting the NY Times. It is a fake news outlet with pretensions of elitist liberal news coverage.
@6:41 really because incompetent Biden has way more deaths than TRump with a vaccine.
ReplyDeleteFunny James always harsh on SOURCES yet CNN and NY times are being used here a ton. The most corrupt news network.
So strange how all these soccer players and athletes all around the world in their best shape with vaccines are getting heart issues.
Just like Hank Aaron, Bob Saget, Bette White and hundreds others who died 2-4 weeks after booster.
ALL WEBSITES HAVE THE ATHLETE WHO WAS INJURED SPECIFICALLY, NOT AN OPINION PIECE, FACT PIECE, MORE CREDIBLE THAN CNN.
Determining whether sources are far right or far left is subjective and usually depends on whether you agree with what is being spewed.
ReplyDeleteThe majority of the resources that many people follow for "news" are "far left"...NY Times, Google, Yahoo, MSN, CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, PBS, NPR, Youtube, Twitter, CDC, NIH, WHO, local TV and radio stations, Time, celebrities, Fauci, Gates, etc. Where has their leadership brought us?
The list of "far right" resources that people regularly follow for news is quite short compared to that of the far left; FOX news(TV and Radio), OAN, Newsmax.
I do not mean to start a debate on "far right" or "far left." I would just like to bring out how the sources above are all subjective. When one of the two sides overwhelmingly dominates, we should all be suspicious, wary and not simply obey without question. Hasn't history taught us this lesson already?

The failed fact checks that occurred were on Op-Ed’s and not straight news reporting.

I rate the Times more critically as they are the voice of the corporate Democrats but they do have a decent fact rating.
ReplyDeleteJames the 90's and early 2000's ny times were respectable. The last 5-6 years they have become a quack job CNN of liberal lies and deceptions and they are currently as credible as breitbart is to you.

As I said earlier, Times is the corporate Democrat voice.
ReplyDeleteI think the NY Post reports more accurately and realistically on schools. The Post's editorial board's solution to privatize schools I completely reject.
Chalkbeat reporting that the DOE will no longer allow remote learning options for kids who are not in quarantine. Two weeks ago, Adams and Banks said they were working on a remote option for all kids. Now it's history. We can't trust those fools. Parents want a remote option and covid is just merely one reason why.
ReplyDelete@7:07 wants to blame "incompetent Biden" for more deaths with a vaccine. It's like blaming the fire department for a fire that's raging out of control after you set the forest on fire and let it go out of control before calling for help.
ReplyDeleteTrump's distribution of vaccinations was a complete and utter debacle and so was his initial response. Whatever deaths we have are because of TRUMP's incompetence and his right-wing media pals who would rather spew lies about the vaccine, and see more people die than to have to give Biden credit on anything.
James is censoring again. That’s what he does when he can’t defend his position. It’s like August all over again.

Funniest thing I’ve seen on this blog. While the Western world is easing restrictions and moving on, some rando wants lockdowns and CCP style authoritarianism.
Speak for yourself. I’m not falling apart over here. My family and friends are healthy and fine. We don’t depend on the government to dictate our health. We take responsibility for our own health and appreciate the freedom of others to make their own choices based on their own level of risk. Our unvaxxed kids handled Omicron just fine.

The manufactured Spotify freakout is not really about Joe Rogan. It’s about ensuring that technocrats tied to industry & elite foundations and their media shills dominate public health discourse - the same way think tank militarists and neocons control the foreign policy debate.
The DOE never allowed remote learning except for kids are in quarantine. For about two minutes they allowed that "teachers" could provide remote learning, or livestream, or whatever, so that if students were not able to access remote learning it would be the teacher's fault. Glad the majority of teachers didn't fall for it.
ReplyDeleteLet me be clear - I am not an anti-vaxxer; I am triple boosted.

How many did we lose from COVID yesterday in the USA? 2573
Do I need more updated info?”
You need a broader explanation. You are completely ignoring comorbidites once again. Most of these COVID deaths were in combination with other conditions like heart disease, obesity, and old age.
“Hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes were the most common comorbidity in patients death due to COVID-19. More than half of the patients had two or more comorbidities.“
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8677356/
553. most deaths involve comorbidities, outside of accidents. this is extremely common. most people live with things that can be considered comorbidities at the time of death. will you next say people don't die from AIDS because of comorbidities being the cause of death? all these things occur together. remove covid, and we wouldnt have all these deaths with comorbidities. they were living until they got... covid. or maybe we can go back to car crashes. they dont kill people, broken necks do!
DeleteSo those lives don't matter since they were already sick? That is sick thinking in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteThis is from PBS on life expectancy going down in 2020 in the United States:
COVID-19 helped erase 1.8 years from the average American’s life expectancy in 2020, according to the latest federal mortality data released Wednesday, marking the greatest change in the American lifespan since World War II. During that one brutal year, COVID-19 became the third-most common cause of death in the United States, with one out of 10 fatalities due to the virus.
“A loss of two years seems limited, but that’s rolling back decades and decades of progress,” said Dr. Zinzi Diana Bailey, a social epidemiologist at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine. “We are going backwards.”
To produce these findings, researchers gathered and analyzed the nation’s death certificates, tallying up how many people died and the underlying cause of each death. There were nearly 529,000 more deaths in the U.S. than in the previous year, for a total of more than 3.3 million, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.
One bright spot in the data: Despite the average American living a shorter life and millions forgoing health care out of fear of catching or spreading the coronavirus, the infant mortality rate fell 2.9 percent to a record low.
ReplyDeleteCompare life expectancy in peer countries also if you want to see how bad a job the US has done with COVID.
"Changes in life expectancy varied substantially across peer countries. Six countries (Denmark, Finland, New Zealand, Norway, South Korea, and Taiwan) had increases in life expectancy between 2018 and 2020."
https://www.bmj.com/content/373/bmj.n1343
“So those lives don't matter since they were already sick? That is sick thinking in my opinion.”
ReplyDeleteYour words, not mine. Do you have any other straw man arguments?
The point you keep ducking is that COVID is predominantly dangerous or deadly for people with comorbidities.
If the government, out of their benevolent attempt at “saving people from themselves”, mandated this vaccine for those at risk (older, obese, and chronically ill), it would still be overreach and an abuse of power. What then stops the government from creating mandates for vegan diets or banning large soft drinks?
Are Americans allowed to make their own medical decisions with their own doctors or does the government always know what’s best for us?
Can Americans be trusted with medical self-determination?
858. honestly, no, they cant be trusted. there is no health education. americans will just go on vibes and feelings. another reason we are in this mess.
Deleteread the reply to your last comment. you are ducking that comorbidities are commonplace in this unhealthy country. which is clear evidence americans are in the dark when it comes to health and nutrition.. and have an overall lack of access to healthcare. these are systemic problems. places with healthier populations, better healthcare systems, and better mitigation policies have done much better.
and also, should we not do all we can to protect other people? is caring for each other's well being not a value in this country?
By that impeccable logic, we would never have mandated vaccines. We would still be battling polio, measles, and other major disease outbreaks constantly. I am glad you aren't in charge but I am moving on from this. If you don't understand that there is something called the public health, I can't help you.
ReplyDeleteGuy sounds like a real Nazi. Only the strong survive. What an asshole. If everyone has a jab, fewer of those people with comorbidities get sick and die.
ReplyDeleteJames you fail to address the fact that the vaccine won’t stop you from giving me COVID. If I want to risk dying of COVID it’s my business not yours or Bejing Biden’s or that c#%t in Albany. The unvaccinated are no more of a threat to others than the vaccinated are. Therefore vaccine mandates for COVID are nothing but an authoritarian unAmerican mandate.
ReplyDelete455 it is not authoritarian if the majority wants it.. and the majority wants it. that's democracy, take it or leave it. by the way, that's a home cooked All American Biden right there. Beijing is doing a lot lot lot better than us handling the outbreak. we should only wish he'd take some notes from around the world, and save a few hundred thousand lives. but you know, some people here seem to find it too much of a burden to have to worry about anyone other than themselves. individualism is not freedom, it's an excuse to be a whiny brat.
DeleteThe entire CoVid horror story has to do with money and power. The vaccines of yesteryear were about saving people from illness and death.
ReplyDeleteVaccine lowers your chances of getting or spreading covid. It does not eliminate it. If everyone was vaccinated, we would have better covid outcomes. I am saddened that this was politicized. Nobody wants to control you.
ReplyDeleteWe are not the ones who are controlled. You right wingers are under the spell of people who feed you partial and false information so as to control you. We can think and it is obvious that the shot saves lives. Look at how many are dying in Trump states. Your leaders are killing you. Sad is the right word.
ReplyDeleteWhat a crock of $%&^. The ones suffering now are students that did not pass a single class because they did not attend a single class and the students who passed all of their classes without completing a stitch of work and never attending class. Many of these poor kids will never be able to pass a Regents class or an AP Exam. Many schools that are low performing schools are already considered Diploma Mills and we are creating even more diploma mills. Graduation only means you are breathing.
ReplyDeleteI recall over 15 years ago when my AP asked me, "Why do you have so many students passing?" Last month the same AP asked me, "Why do you only have 40% of your students passing, are you considering learning loss during your planning and when you are grading?"

ReplyDeleteFail them if they deserve to fail. No one is going easy on our observations. They should be eliminated just Luke the Regents Exams
They admitted the shot would lower transmission risk.supposedly, the numbers are way down.fake numbers anyway...perhaps due to midterm elections, idk.why is hochul acting crazy?wait till she legally has the job.we have to prevent that!
ReplyDeleteIf everybody stopped smoking. If everybody eliminated processed foods. If everybody eliminated sugar. If if if. What I put in my body is none of your fucking business. The vaccine does not prevent transmission. Just like me eating Velveeta covered french fries for breakfast lunch and dinner doesn’t clog YOUR arteries. I don’t want your nose in my business. Period. Control freaks. All of you. Can’t wait for some crazed Republican to use that government control you campaigned for. That’s the only way you fools will see how wrong you are.
ReplyDeleteIf more people are vaxxed, it would lower viral load and in turn lower transmission. If more people are vaxxed, then we also stand a chance to avoid more variants. But because of trash individualist attitudes and policies, we failed at this as a country, we will need a variant proof vax at this point.
DeleteHey if something that lowers transmission is more acceptable to you, shutdowns and closures work for this. Of course, everyone has to actual pull together, unite as one, and do it. So that's probably out of the question in our self centered nation.
ReplyDelete12:26: Good for you. You're the last of a dying breed and for all you so called teachers out there who just say pass the kids, how would you like it if the airline industry gave out pilot licenses to people who failed their pilot exams saying "well we need more pilots of color in the airline industry." In NYC it was the other way around. Over 80% not vaccinated.
However if the claim made here is correct that vaccines no longer are effective then that means that we need to go back to massive lockdowns until omicron specific vaccines are available. That is unlikely to be correct, as other evidence (such as from NYC) shows that at least the mRNA vaccines keep you out of the hospital. As of a few weeks ago you were 41x as likely to be hospitalized in NYC if you were not vaccinated.
Highly vaccinated populations, such as in Israel, will have a large fraction of their cases be vaccinated. That is explained by Bayes’ Theorem, published 1763.
Anon23 blew the bs out of the water.will we see it in our media?doubtful. I believe if everyone would wear a quality mask properly and consistently, it would make a huge difference without lockdowns.ni need for experimental shot.bur people are aelfish.

Newsday Data: Nearly as many COVID deaths on LI last month as in January 2021
ReplyDeleteA frustration for health care professionals is that the vaccine was much more widely available last month than it was a year ago. "The people who are dying of COVID are the unvaccinated,” said Elyse Isopo, a critical-care nurse at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. "That's the most devastating thing for us."
It's an individual's choice to risk covid or not.all of you who say the shot protects you from serious illness should not be disturbed or accuse the unvaxxed of spreading it.even the cdc admits the shot doesn't halr transmission and viral loads of vaxxed and unvaxxed are the same.let people choose.most will have mild illness, yes, some will get very ill or die, but that is a personal choice, as is the annual choice to decline the hepatitis shot.i declined.i work an d75, I was bitten once.i chose to risk it. People have the right to risk covid rather than risking serious illness or death from a shot. And I know of someone who died of hepatitis from a patient.freedim of choice not to participate in a medical experiment, especially by those who funded and were likely involved in making the virus and who profit astronomically from it.
