This information came today from Class Size Matters leader Leonie Haimson.
1. Just a quick message to let you know that according to sources, the City Council is back at the negotiating table with the Mayor, pushing him to restore the school budget cuts. Let's hope they make a deal and soon!
2. Sen. John Liu is having an Education Town hall this Wed. August 17 at 6 PM at the Flushing Library. Sen. Liu was the main sponsor of the class size bill in the State Senate and it's important that as many parents show up as possible to support smaller classes, as there is a small but vocal contingent of Queens parents who have been harassing him on the issue. Where: Flushing Library at 41-17 Main St
When: 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
Leonie will be there. Norm Scott will be there as should Camille and me and many others.
So you want more money, which will be flushed down the toilet. It's like writing and discussing the rules on the first day of school-which will immediately be ignored-and then being told there is no attendance policy and you have to pass everyone.
ReplyDeleteIsn't the contract more important?
NYC DOE still banning parents from school buildings and segregating students in PSAL sports based on vaccine status.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what John Liu thinks about this? Every other district in all of NY state does not have medical segregation and discrimination. Even the apparatchiks of the CDC disagree with this policy, 1 year too late.
John Liu seems to not have a problem with segregation at all. He made it known in his latest Park video.
DeleteFrankly, he has been acting like a ccp sleeping agents lately. Since All the way back in 2012, when his campaign had a $ legal problem. I have no trust in him.
So parents of Pre-K and 3-K students who are unvaxx'ed cannot enter school on the first day of school?
ReplyDeleteGood news for teachers without a contract.
ReplyDeleteFamilies are spending 40% more on school supplies this year compared to 2019 because of 40-year-high inflation.
7:37, at least people are working this year, unlike under Trump when unemployment hit a 80 year high.
ReplyDeleteBecause of covid. Happened in every country. I think dems we’re the ones who wanted shutdowns and masks forever. I think the aft president wanted school shutdowns forever.
DeleteNot the best argument. Unemployment in Feb 2020 was 3.5%. There were records being set for all time low black, Hispanic and Asian unemployment. And I’m a registered democrat. Facts are facts.
DeleteDuring Trump’s first three years in office, median household incomes grew, inequality diminished, and the poverty rate among Black people fell below 20% for the first time in post-World War II records. The unemployment rate among Black people went under 6% for the first time in records going back to 1972.
ReplyDeleteThe unemployment rate fell from 4.7% shortly after Trump’s election to 3.5% by the end of 2019, below Federal Reserve expectations of about 4.5%.
Yes, he was riding the winds of Obama's success, and then due to his catastrophic response to COVID it all went to hell. That's on his watch as well.
ReplyDelete8:45 I guess you know better than Fortune magazine and all the rest. LOL
ReplyDelete8:14 Excuses, excuses. It was on his watch, and his response had a helluva lot to do with it.
ReplyDeleteIf he didn't fuck up the pandemic response, he might have won in spite of the lunacy of the way he ran the country. You remember him saying it will disappear by April. Not exactly inspiring. Economy then collapsed under dear Donald.
ReplyDeleteI will keep it on topic by saying the federal government is still pouring in money so we should not have a budget problem in NYC
And it tanked after that @8:45. That's documented. Posted it on another thread. If you're really interested in facts, look it up yourself.
ReplyDelete9:14 they make every excuse for him. Obama came in during a time when the country was literally on the brink of economic collapse. And then had to deal with McConnell who said right after the election that his first priority was to make sure Obama failed at getting anything through. Despite all of the efforts to impeded any progress he still got a lot done. Then, just as now, Biden was handed a pile of manure that he had to clean up. That's what Republicans do, they screw things up royally, and Democrats have to come in behind them to do clean-up.
ReplyDeleteDid Canada have a better response?
ReplyDeleteThey had…in March 2020…
Unemployment increased by 413,000 (+36.4%)
You kinda say opposite things. Unemployment was too high yet he wanted to get everything back to normal too fast-While a vaccine was developed lightning fast.
I agree w 914.
ReplyDeleteNot a trump fan bc of his divisiveness, but before covid, things weren’t bad.
His splitting of people was terrible. In a way, fauci did it also on a lesser level w the vax.
Well, before the Russian invasion of Ukraine the price of gas wasn't so bad. Everybody has their challenges and that's just the way it is. And I don't think 9:14 is complimenting Trump at all.
ReplyDelete"His splitting of people was terrible". Is that what he did? He tried to steal an entire election and didn't respond when his followers attacked the Capitol resulting in death and injury. That's not a small thing.
ReplyDeleteOdd that teachers who keep complaining about low salary and an expiring contract, including Randi Weingarten, now don’t mind 40 year inflation high.
ReplyDelete9:34 Maybe it's the same people complaining about salary and expiring contract that also complain about inflation because all they like to do is complain
ReplyDeleteForbes: "Ahead of the international crisis, Americans had already been facing higher costs at the pump due in large part to a return to the road after Covid lockdowns. In late 2021, President Joe Biden moved to release some oil reserves to push down prices.
ReplyDeleteBut the situation in Eastern Europe has negated those efforts. . While the national average for a gallon of gas was $3.41 in December, the national average on Feb. 25, the day after Russia invaded Ukraine, reached $3.57, according to AAA."

ReplyDelete@bradlander made a point at this morning's City Council hearing worth emphasizing: The DOE's overall budget is generally not driven by enrollment
These IBO charts (enrollment vs. district funding) illustrate this:

Hi! I'm working on a story about back-to-school inflation in NYC. Are you a parent noticing school supplies cost more? A teacher spending more to set up your classroom? An educator or PTA prez dealing with both higher prices and school budget uncertainty? I’d love to chat.

ReplyDeleteIf NYC teachers can joke about or dismiss inflation, they make enough money and don't need a raise. The children of nyc need the money. Those that were born here, came here and especially our recent border crossing newcomers. Forgo the raise for the children. If you're not suffering from inflation, you honestly don't need the money. It's not about what teachers deserve. It's about what teachers need. These comments show you do not need more money. Be selfless and ask the city to earmark teacher raises for children who are suffering.
ReplyDelete1:30 so lame and artificial. Nobody's joking about inflation, and that's just you making up stuff and twisting things It's tiring to keep repeating it ad nauseam as if people here are stupid, and it's only done to take a dig at Biden and Democrats in general. If you care so much about the all the children of the world, nothing is stopping you from donating your raise or reaching out to the city to make the request and see how far you get. Nobody has to do that for you. I can hear the screeching now calling for Mulgrew's head. Seems some of you love to brag about how much money you make to do nothing, send your money.
