Members of the UFT might not feel so disenfranchised if they saw their union leaders working HARDER for LESS. Just like we are being required to do. Instead, we have on our hands the stereotypical union FATCATS, who, in addition to being corrupt individuals with only self-interest in mind, are making ENORMOUS salaries. Its just sickening and only pisses off membership, who are very aware of the $$ we pay every month for dues. And pissed off members will strike back when they are given the opportunity.
And the senior teachers, who are in the twilight of their careers and who have very little to lose by dropping out, are going to lead the way. These veterans will not forget how they have been ROYALLY screwed by the UFT. Just ask any ATR if they ever thought they would find themselves in this position so late in their careers.
The fact that we waited all those years, and have to wait another 4 years to get our raises and back pay...Every year dues went up while we were waiting, UFT higher up salaries went up...Mulgrew makes more than the Mayor...And we are struggling to get a few bucks extra per year, as working conditions get a million times worse, and our medical expenses go up, while TDA interest rate goes down...HUH?
We in the union movement and those fighting on behalf of public education are wonderful at diagnosis. We understand what the problem/s are. We can repeat to each other in perfect harmony every element of the arguments against common core curriculum and unfair teacher assessments, against bad union contracts, against the terrible working conditions in our schools. We are wonderful at right-diagnosis but not so wonderful at thinking about right-strategy, including Prof. Reich.
I know that there are many intelligent and energetic people in MORE and ST and across the country who are working to make their unions and schools better. We face a catastrophe--but we need to get in line with everyone else whose catastrophe is about to happen, as well.
Yes, we had disagreements last year about the best political choices to be made. But we've had years to develop and experiment with new approaches, new ways forward. It was never sufficient to condemn the totalitarian structures of the UFT and I'm glad the we now have representation on the Executive Board--which will not change the organization but will keep us better informed.
Teachers are among the most conservative union members in the country--half the teachers in the US won't even admit that they belong to a union and, instead, belong to things called "education associations." Names are not that important. But, if we don't stop analyzing and diagnosing and start doing new things right now--I've offered some suggestions elsewhere that have been uniformly rejected--our profession and the last remnant of the American labor movement will disappear and we will never get them back.
Desperate times require brave, fearless and, above all, new ways of resisting. I'm done with analysis. We know what the problems are. Anyone got some new ideas about what to do, say, next month? And I'm not talking about another resolution at the DA.
When we get the TDA back to 8.25%, get a multi year raise at 3% to 4% per year, get choice transfers, get the discpline code actually used, then we could talk about the union. Until then, fuck the union.

The suspect in the rape and murder of Queens jogger Karina Vetrano said he “wanted to bring a knife to school to stab all the girls” five years ago, police sources told The Post on Monday.
Chanel Lewis was just 15 years old in 2011 when he told a teacher’s aide of his violent wishes, sources said.
Lewis graduated from Martin De Porres High School, a school for emotionally disturbed students in Rockaway Park, Queens. It was not immediately clear if he was attending in 2011.
School officials called cops, who took Lewis into custody as an “emotionally disturbed person,” sources said. Lewis was later released.
The suspect’s half-sister, Theresa Forbes, 36, insisted Monday that her sibling “did not have any problem with women.
“He has nieces, and he played with them,” Forbes told reporters.
She said his behavioral issues in high school consisted of “regular stuff. He made regular problems.”
Lewis, now 20, confessed to detectives on Sunday that he killed Vetrano, 30, after he happened to encounter her as she was running along a path inside Spring Creek Park in Howard Beach, Queens, on Aug. 2.
He told cops that he was in a bad mood as he walked from his Brooklyn home to get something to eat in Howard Beach, sources said.
He said he suddenly snapped upon seeing Vetrano and attacked her, the sources said.
Lewis was held without bail Sunday night at his arraignment in Queens Criminal Court.
