For those of you who are interested in changing the UFT, all of us will have our opportunity in 2016 as it is a UFT election year. All of the citywide offices including President will be voted on in the spring.
The Chief Leader civil service weekly newspaper put in a full piece on the 2016 UFT election in the October 9 issue. I was interviewed for the MORE-New Action joint slate which will challenge Michael Mulgrew and his Unity Caucus. Unity is the political party that has controlled the UFT since the 1960s. Unity requires its members to be completely loyal to the leadership on every major issue or risk expulsion from the caucus and exile from the union gravy train that includes union paid trips to AFT/NYSUT conventions, after school union jobs and for the lucky few full time union positions.
If you want to change our union back into an organization that truly advocates for its members and public schools, now is the time to step forward and get involved to spread the word that there is a viable alternative to Michael Mulgrew and Unity.
I am personally looking forward to the upcoming election as the torch continues to be passed to a new generation of younger union activists. Veterans like me still have a valuable role to play but I will not be the candidate for President. An announcement on who will be the MORE-New Action challenger to Mulgrew will be coming this month. I will hopefully be nominated to run for some position and will keep working to transform the UFT back into a real trade union.

GET RID OF THESE UNITY CAUCUS BASTARDS ALREADY.
VOTE! SPREAD THE WORD!
ICE / MORE ... SOMEBODY NEEDS TO TAKE THIS PRESIDENT JOB WHO IS NOT A SELL OUT!
A vote for this jughead Mulgrew is a vote for health care deductions once he is re elected. This clown has done so much damage to the UFT that 25% of membership are going to walk if given the green light by the Supreme Court. I havnt seen morale so low and anger so high in my 28 years. Its bad enough having NYC playing you for a chump but now its a tag team with this good-for-nothing- dues-sucking UNITY.
132 comments for the last posting on the pittance we are getting and two on this one. Need any of us say anything else? Members are more interested in counting their little retro than in getting this union back on track by getting rid of Mulgrew and voting in MORE.
It is definitely time to take back our union. I will spread the word at my work place.
I'm voting for Portelos and Solidarity. New Action can't be trusted and MORE doesn't even have a presidential candidate.
Throw away your vote on Portelos to make sure Unity wins again. MORE has some big convention thing to announce the candidate.
Grass roots... this is going to take some modern tech along with some old fashioned truth. I hope it can be kicked up to high gear to make this happen.
I'll hold my breath and wait for MORE to make a decision - no just joking, Portelos has my vote.
You must mean like MORE using democracy to make a decision unlike self-proclaiming someone a presidential candidate like Unity does. Solidarity/Unity - same old.
Hopefully MORE will pick Zucker for president, he seems to exemplify the MORE ideal.
AL or Peter?
Portelos makes Mulgrew look good.
To James,
LOL. Peter, of course.
4:29,
You make Mulgrew look good.
I sent a Letter to the Editor about their covering the election- it can be found in the 10/16/15 issue that followed, under "Boss Mulgrew?". I commend The Chief for always covering more than the establishment side of any labor issue, and for its editor' s willingness to show all sides of an issue...
I ain't running for no president job. I want to enjoy myself.
