The NYC Patrolman's Benevolent Association has finally agreed to a tentative contract.
According to my reading of the details, the cops have not, repeat not, done anything to beat pattern bargaining where one municipal union settles on a salary increase and others receive basically the same financial terms. The city going back to the Koch years has often given the uniform unions 1% over the civilian unions, such as the UFT. This deal with the PBA adheres to the uniform pattern.
The PBA beat the UFT civilian pattern but so did all the other uniform unions. That is not unusual.
The PBA did get an extra 2.25% increase for cops in exchange for an agreement for officers to be equipped with body cameras. However, this is going to be paid for by lowering, yes lowering, salaries for new officers.
This is from the Daily News account of the tentative agreement:
To pay for the extra 2.25% hike that would be given to all PBA members as of this March, the city would cut starting salaries for new hires - saving itself roughly $30,000 per cop over five years.
The reduced salary for NYPD rookies would be $42,500 - down from the $42,819 new hires earn now.
After a year and a half, officers would earn $45,000. They would get another $1,000 at 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 years - reaching $51,000 after 4 1/2 years.
Once they pass the five-year mark, pay jumps to $85,292.
PBA also agreed to health savings, the same as other city unions.
For those who will comment that the police will not have to wait until 2020 to get their retroactive money paid in full whereas UFT members will have to wait, that is true. The cops received that money in raises between 2008-2010. In terms of retro, they did better than the UFT as did most other city unions.
If this contract meets the needs of the city Police Officers, they should vote for it. However, if anyone tells you that PBA President Patrick Lynch broke the pattern, just point to the lower starting salaries for cops and say the PBA is subject to pattern bargaining just like the rest of us.

top salary 90000, UFT 30,000 more -- this is a factor at pension time.
NYPD - 27 vacation days - UFT - about - 90 days.
Retro - while no interest, still is a moving target - also spread out also helps with tax liability.
Oh yeah, and then there is the fact that as a cop, you could be killed on duty--- no by a "deadly Danielson" drive by - but instead by a real life thug - not a terrorist admin
Cops don't need a masters degree either. Oh yeah, they also don't have to do 100 hours of PD every 5 years that they have PAY FOR. They also get a parking permit to park in front of their station house. Maybe it is time to take the next PD exam!
You are so brain washed it's not funny. An awful lot of America's dumbest work in NYC. The pattern is broken when they get 1% more and another 2.25%, the NYPD contract also doesn't have a nearly 9 month period where they received 0%, which was painted over well by the UFT and city. The retro savings we've given the city is in the 100's of millions as teachers are fired, quit and die. Never to get the raises every other union receive!
The person who said we get tax advantages with the retro being paid the way it is is another idiot...definitely not an accountant. Our salaries are rising, we're making more overall and then throw in 15k check...not good for your taxes.
The average retro for NYPD will be 12k paid upon ratification, while I wait with every other teacher for 87.5% of what I am owed! This is disgusting! I could've paid my bills off sooner, bought a house, invested in the TDA! Instead teachers were totally F-ed!

A valued teacher and friend to everyone in my building died of breast cancer last year. She had worked for 24 years and was a single mother supporting 2 kids. She lost her 50k in retro! Your article made me very upset when you simply disregard how bad our contract is for many many members who never get their retro because they leave or die. She never saw her money, her family never will! And because the 8% is not in our salaries her family received a lower death benefit.
Please read and review your opinion. I truly think you might be wrong and so does the news.

The main theme of the article was that the PBA did not break pattern bargaining. They got what every uniform union member got. To get extra money, they traded lower salaries for the unborn for higher salaries for those in the system. The UFT contract is terrible as this blog has stated over and over. Waiting for our retro and the interest free loan to the city that won't be paid back in full until 2020 are horrible terms especially when the city has so much money.

Just read the article you linked to. It changes nothing. The UFT could spread raises by not giving them to new hires too. They chose not to do it. I don't think lowering salaries for the unborn is a strategy. Read the Daily News piece.
Ten years with an MA+30 gets a salary over $85,000 for teachers. Let's at least argue the facts.
I did not write the comment you refer to, however, I am in my 15th year, make $88,080 exactly. At 10 years you make $85,793 exactly now. I think the nu,bears are close enough to argue from.
Sorry James, im finishing my 15th year, $88,000. Lets be serious, 5 year cops and 15 year teachers almost identical in salary. Lets be serious. Its no wonder we get these pathetic deals. I have these idiot teachers I work with STILL have no idea about the contract, the medical, the retro.

That is right from the UFT website for May 1, 2016. $85,793 is for a MA + 30.
Another thing that scares me is when Rob Linn (city negotiator) comes back to other unions he might say, "What are you willing to trade if you want 2.25%?" Selling out the unborn is not something we can do with a severe teacher shortage on the horizon. Can you see new time for money swaps in our future? You know how much the Unity Caucus is inclined to go for givebacks.
Gentlemen I think you're missing the larger point : Meathead Mike, by insisting on going first, did the entire NYC unionized workforce a disservice by bending over and taking it up the ass from DiBlahsio. Nothing but sawdust between his ears.
Read our post from May 2, 2014. We said it at the time that the contract was a bad move. Nothing that has happened since then has changed my opinion.
Finishing 15th year, so i get L15 in September Of 2017. $88K. I think thats pretty lousy for that many years with a Masters plus 30 and considering we are in an expensive place, NYC.
Another thing is, after L15 you have wait 3 years for the next raise which is L18, that is only $2k. Then have to wait 2 more years for the next raise. Thats many, like 5 years, with no raise and 1 year with only a 2k taxable raise. Thats why we need on time, cost of living contractual raises. Which brings us to December 1, 2018.
