CUOMO COMING TO THE RESCUE OF MAYORAL CONTROL

Just in case teachers needed another reason to despise Governor Andrew Cuomo, it looks like the Governor is now trying to be the savior of mayoral dictatorship of New York City schools.

This is from the NY Times:

ALBANY — Acting to avert a leadership crisis in New York City’s schools amid a legislative stall in the Capitol, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo intends to call a special session of the State Legislature as early as Wednesday and introduce a bill that would extend mayoral control of the city’s educational system for one year.

The session would be focused on granting Mayor Bill de Blasio another year of control over the city’s schools and their 1.1 million students, according to an administration official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the negotiations. The law giving the mayor that power expires after Friday.

It is frustrating that the politicians are going out of their way to save something as unpopular and undemocratic as mayoral control.

By having a Board of Education there will be less charter schools than with mayoral control. Cuomo is owned by charter corporations.

Come on James, Mayoral control or not, things change? No.

Bloomberg would disagree with you and he would be correct.

It was much better before mayoral control. I taught under both systems.

I also taught under both systems and my experience was that with community schools boards the relationship between teacher and admins was more of a collegial one, as opposed to the antagonistic one that currently exists.

So my AP will act differently if the mayor loses control? No.

Our schools are going in the wrong direction with the failed policies of the last 12 years.

9:54- Maybe not, but if a district is in charge, they will be paying more attention. If someone is a real jerk, it gets to the district office. Also, an ambitious AP is going to try to impress those in district office. Giving lots of U's might be the way to get ahead now, but no one really trusts someone who is out to get their employees. Overall, I found that administration was more even keeled under the old system. The districts were also more responsive to parents.

Billy boy just got a two year extension. That should spur a spike in teacher retirements.
