WEST VIRGINIA SENATE CUTS TEACHER RAISE TO 4%; STRIKE CONTINUES; BERNIE SANDERS BACKS WV TEACHERS

From The Associated Press via ABC News:

A joint legislative committee in West Virginia is set to address differences in pay raise bills for the state's striking teachers and school service personnel.
The teachers, who walked out of classrooms statewide starting Feb. 22, say they won't return to the classroom until lawmakers approve a 5 percent raise they negotiated with the governor.
On Saturday the Republican-controlled Senate voted for a 4 percent pay raise. The Republican-controlled House of Delegates earlier approved a 5 percent raise proposal that unions had negotiated with Gov. Jim Justice. House members later Saturday wouldn't agree to the Senate's move.
Two Republicans and one Democrat from each chamber will serve on the conference committee. House of Delegates spokesman Jared Hunt said Sunday no meeting had been scheduled. It wasn't yet clear when the committee would meet.
According to the state Department of Education, schools statewide have been canceled on Monday.
BURLINGTON, Vt., March 3 – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) issued the following statement in support of the teachers on strike in West Virginia:
“Over a hundred years ago the coal miners of West Virginia helped lead the struggle in our country for fair wages and dignity on the job. Today, the teachers of West Virginia are carrying on that brave tradition. There is no more important work than educating our young people. The teachers of West Virginia, and teachers throughout our country, deserve decent salaries and affordable health care. I stand with the teachers of West Virginia in their fight for justice and dignity.”

Credit Chaz...Things are going well, unionproud...In the first semester of the 2017-18 school year saw a spike in arrests summonses, and use of restraints by the NYPD in the New York City school system. The Daily News article reported that the major crimes in the schools increase was 8% over the same period in the 2016-`17 school year.

The figures published Friday show reported incidents of major crimes in the public schools, such as larceny, arson or robbery, rose to 163 in the period of October through December 2017. That's up from 151 in the same period in 2016.

Obviously, the weakened student discipline code, the emphasis on restorative justice and reduced suspensions have empowered misbehaving students to commit offenses that require NYPD intervention. Mayor Bill de Blaio may claim the schools are safer but with arrests up and students feeling less safe, the opposite is true.

Are the New York City school safe? Not according to the NYPD statistics.

The Virginia teachers got balls, we got marbles.

Not everything is about us. NYC teachers make about 2.5 Times the average WVA teacher. Plus the best paid for benefits almost anywhere.

Sometimes we should think about the plight of others and realize while things could always improve here we have it reasonably good by comparison, for now.

Oh really 834? Cost of living and deterioration of work conditions and maximization of abuse and ridiculous observation setup and rating system. Plus, medical coverage and pension has gotten worse.

Comparing our salary to one in WV makes no sense. I’ll even concede your numbers may be correct. But, I’ve taught in another state in which i made about 1/3rd of what I make here, and that money went way further. New York is *expensive*. You need to account for what our salary can do here. What percentage of teachers here own a home vs. those in WV? How do our benefits and salaries compare to those in surrounding districts? How many teachers here can afford to raise a family?

The cost of living here is obscene and our salary does not come close to being enough. Maybe you’re a UFT official who wants to pretend you’re doing enough. You are not. Work harder. Get us better pay and benefits, and stop with the snow job. Back to work!.

West Virginia is poor. Nice folks. The IFT with all its money could easily handle a strike, but would never. Mulgrew is vying for Randi’s job and catering to charter school allies and pushing for 4 observations. That’s why you’re not hearing anything about Caravaggio (or whatever his name is) - he was vetted by Eva. Wait until you see what’s next! Everyone will be opting out of the UFT.

You’ve missed the point, you lug. We make more than teachers in WV do, but, prices are higher here, so, *we’re* the ones who are poor. We can’t buy property (they can) we can’t afford to raise a family (they can). Yet, we sit on our thumbs during contract time and they fight.

Those teachers are in a Right to Work state and they still pay their dues. You scabs are thinking about withholding yours and doing nothing but complain.

Not even. Shriveled-up raisins.

Anonymous 8:34 Charleston WV is its largest city. Median home prices $99 per sq ft. Westchester County $297 per sq ft. Brooklyn over $700 per sq ft. Still think we have it better? Roseanne McCosh

Does this go on in WV? My school wont let us give a grade below 45. How is that not grade fraud? So a child gets a 0, they get 45 averaged in...They dont do a project, they get a 45.
This makes it nearly impossible to fail. No wonder we have a 97% grad rate. I write this here because...where is the CL? The district rep?

At 514...

Everywhere I've worked, it's been the lowest you can give is 55. Which I feel is even worse than 45, on principle, because it suggests the child may have done something worthy of being called work.

To me, 45 sounds at least somewhat stringent lol as pathetic as that is.

He isnt talking about a report card grade, I dont think. If a kid gets a 0 on a test you have to average it as a 45? You should call the State Education Department.

Anonymous said...

Are you guys seriously complaining about 45s? If you give a kid a zero, you’re tell them they have to get 100 on the next quiz to even get a 50 average, which is still failing. Why does it matter to you if the kid fails with a 45, or with a zero? Why give them the sense they could never come back in September? Do you like having classroom management problems all year?

The inflated graduation rates aren’t from the 45 edict. The credit recovery freebies and rampant grade changes are what does it. Pick your battles.

Good points 1:46.

Why do you revert to name calling ? They are union works for them which is why they pay their dues. Where did I say I wasn’t going to pay them ? Fuck you, by the way.

Carranza as new chancellor. Waiting for the scoop on this guy.

While I agree about pick your battles, its not like they are saying, give the kid a couple points on a quiz, they are saying, if a kid gets a term project, doesnt do it, average in a 45 into their grade instead of zero. If a kid gets a test, gets a 7 out of 100, average in a 45 instead of 7. Those are drastic amounts of extra points. Those fake points make a kid have damn near a 65 average for doing nothing.

Anonymous said...

It’s not a 65. My tests are hard enough that you have to know something to pass. So, a couple of 70s in a row, and I feel good about forgetting that zero (45). A kid is not going to get a 70 on anything late in my class without knowing something. And, if a kid struggles and never cracks 65, well, at least they struggled so they will have some familiarity with the content when they take the class next year. People who give zeros just want the kid to feel humiliated enough to disappear. That’s asinine.

Feel the Bern? Oh good: free shit. Better call Debbie Wasserman Schultz to clear it first.
As for picking battles, most teachers I know realize we have already lost the war.

I hate the UFT more than anything I have ever hated in my entire life. Call me whatever you want, those motherfuckers are not getting my money.
