RECORD NUMBER OF CHILDREN IN US GETTING COVID-19; REFORM GROUP PUSHING BIDEN ON AN EDUCATION SECRETARY; I HOPE THE ELECTION ENDS FAST

There's so much going on today with Election Day and COVID-19.

This was at NBC:

More than 61,000 children in the U.S. were diagnosed with Covid-19 last week — more than in any other week during the pandemic, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children's Hospital Association reported Monday.

In all, 853,635 children have been diagnosed with the virus this year, representing 11.1 percent of all U.S. cases. The percentage of pediatric cases has risen steadily since mid-April, when children accounted for just 2 percent of Covid-19 cases in the country.

"This is a stark reminder of the impact this pandemic is having on everyone — including our children and adolescents," Dr. Sally Goza, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, said in a news release. The organization updates the number of children with Covid-19 weekly, using state health department data.

Further down:

As of Thursday, 121 children had died.

The tally doesn't include a 13-year-old boy who died over the weekend in Missouri, less than two weeks after he last attended class.

So much could be prevented if schools would just go fully remote until we know it is safe in school buildings. Please review the CDC guidelines and send them to de Blasio and Mulgrew:

Lowest risk:

Students and teachers engage in virtual-only classes, activities, and events

Only stating the obvious there.

I have been somewhat surprised and rather perplexed that readers have taken the national election battle here in the comments. There have to be better places than a dissident UFT blog to argue over the merits of Joe Biden or Donald Trump.

You know where I am coming from writing this blog. I voted for Biden weeks ago with an absentee ballot but am not a big fan. I do have some hopes for Biden on education because his wife Jill Biden is a community college professor who seems to get it on the schools. My class at Middle College was invited to hear her speak when she appeared at LaGuardia Community College in 2016. After listening to her, I came out believing she is on our side. That said, we have to be concerned that the so-called education reformers are fighting to get their voice heard on who Biden picks as the Secretary of Education.

It may be a bit premature as no votes have been tallied as I write this but Chalkbeat this afternoon covered their favorite anti-public education/anti-union group called Democrats for Educational Reform. DFER is trying to push certain pro-charter school people for Secretary of Education.

Democrats for Education Reform is coordinating a behind-the-scenes push for Chicago schools chief Janice Jackson, the head of Baltimore schools Sonja Brookins Santelises, or Philadelphia superintendent William Hite, according to an email sent to supporters Monday by the group’s president Shavar Jeffries and obtained by Chalkbeat. All three, Jeffries wrote, would represent a “‘big tent’ approach to education policy making.”

Translation: Political realities mean that someone who has championed a specific brand of education reform isn’t likely to be Biden’s pick. But it’s possible for the choice to be someone who’s worked closely with charter schools while running a big-city school district — rather than someone affiliated with a major teachers union, for instance, whose tent might be too small for Democrats for Education Reform.

We cannot allow ourselves to be "Arne Duncaned" if Biden wins. One has to get way down toward the bottom of the Chalkbeat article before they talk about the changing political times and why DFER may not have so much sway with Biden.

In general, though, DFER has found some of its favored policies moving further from the Democratic Party’s mainstream. As a presidential candidate, Biden has proposed a slew of new federal restrictions on charter schools and been critical of standardized testing — a clear shift from the Obama administration, which promoted the growth of charter schools and teacher evaluations linked to test scores.

“It is certainly the Biden plan,” the campaign’s policy director Stef Feldman said at a recent event, describing the candidate’s agenda for schools. “The vice president is pretty committed to the concept that we need to be investing in our public neighborhood schools and we can’t be diverting funding away from them.”

A number of factors have driven the shift within the Democratic party — including disillusionment with Obama-era reforms, the increased political strength of teachers and their unions, and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, who is highly unpopular among Democrats and became a figurehead for school choice.

They then mention national union leaders Randi and Lili as possible Secretaries of Education.

I wonder who some of you would pick for the job.

For anyone who doesn't think it is important, recall how Arne Duncan didn't have to go through Congress to change federal education policy in a significant way. All the Obama administration did was to dangle federal money as a way to get the states to adhere to President Obama's pro-charter school, anti-public school teacher Race to the Top agenda that we are still paying for with the horrible evaluation system.

Concerning the election today, I hope it is decided sooner rather than later and decisively. If Trump wins again through the electoral college but loses the popular vote, that will be the worst of all outcomes for the country. As I stated in the comments the other day, a third Republican victory in twenty years after their candidate loses the popular vote will lead to many feeling we live under a Republican minority rule apartheid presidency. I don't condone violence to change our archaic political system even if many believe they are powerless. I prefer going the route of an action like a general strike. Something's eventually gotta give.

No matter who gets to 270 electoral votes, I fear a long-drawn-out election fight will be terrible for the USA, especially when COVID-19 is spreading again quickly.

Have a great time watching the results trickle in tonight. I didn't watch in 2016 because I had a sick feeling that something was amiss early that November evening so I sensibly went to bed and got the news all at once when I woke up early in the morning. I won't soon forget going to work the day after the Trump triumph, and with the exception of two or three people, thinking I was comforting teachers and students who were grieving the death of a close relative. Tonight, I feel uncertain about so much more. I'm just relieved to have my family and close friends.

Trump shouldn’t be president. However Biden presents as a frail old man on the verge of dementia. As we know in this world perception accounts for a whole lot. I hate to say this but I think we are in for 4 more years of this nut job. When will the Dems put up a half way decent candidate of both sound mind and body?

Biden is likely winning. GOP keeps Senate. So it will be...

Biden wins, the Senate won't pass his bills, he executive orders, gets sued, the lawsuit goes to a 6-3 SCOTUS.

We won't be Dunc-ed again if we back Linda Darling-Hammond and she gets the job in a Biden Admin.

excerpted from the Washington Post
By
Valerie Strauss

By the time Obama was elected, major flaws in the No Child Left Behind K-12 law were obvious, and its mandates to states were impossible to meet. With Darling-Hammond, then a Stanford University professor, stewarding the transition team, some in the education world were given hope that the new president would make equity a key goal. Those in the corporate-based school reform community, however, saw her as being too tied to unions and blasted that decision.

AD
But instead of naming her as education secretary, Obama tapped Arne Duncan. A former chief of Chicago schools and a friend of Obama’s, Duncan was deeply steeped in the corporate reform movement that embraced the Common Core standards, tests, data and school “choice” as the way to close the achievement gap.

Darling-Hammond then wrote an award-winning book, “The Flat World and Education: How America’s Commitment to Equity Will Determine Our Future,” about authentic educational equity, and had two copies printed in hardcover. One was for her; the other she sent to Obama in an effort to try to steer his reform policies toward equity. He didn’t.

Darling-Hammond has an extraordinary résumé and has long been sought out by federal, state and local officials and educators to help improve education policy and practices.

The dominos started falling late last night with Wisconsin, Michigan is next, Georgia will follow today as the big cities run the mail ballots. It's a done deal.

So on to the topic, it's going to be - using Norm's term - a "deformer". AOC pointed out how the Dems didn't do as well with Hispanics (particularly in Florida) as expected. That's going to be a key for Harris (I don't think Biden is going to finish the term let alone run) in '24 particularly if the D's want to flip Texas. Key Dem constituencies are very pro-charter and pro-school choice.

Overnight in MI...The score in that batch of votes was:

Biden 138,339
Trump 0

Sounds legit.

10:21, Yours is the kind of comment that worries me.

Anonymous said...

Lol, 1021, they must really hate Trump in MI. I'm a registered Dem but that happening just isn't believable. I checked, that 138k-0 actually happened.

Anonymous said...

Man those Cubans in Florida sure are racist for voting for the Orange white supremacist.

TJL said...

10:21 That's a screwup by the Decision Desk reporting it. Of course there's Dem voter fraud but they're smart enough not to submit 100% Biden votes in a UHaul.

This was signed, sealed and delivered months ago when widespread mail-in voting was normalized. Plus, not for nothing, but plenty of GOP controlled states have failed to implement voter ID.

The GOP needs to work overtime now to save the Senate in '22 and prep for a DeSantis candidacy in '24. Crying over this spilled milk is pointless and is really just kayfabe to try and raise money (I got a fundraising text just a few minutes ago under the guise of "the left is trying to steal this election...)

Anonymous said...

I'm 1021, i didn't give a penny to either party. Just seems weird. Also, Trump loses the election based on 4 cities, not states...Phil, Atl, Mil, Det. Honestly, my biggest concern is stock market performance. That is my key to retiring very early, well below 55 years old and leaving this pathetic job.

TJL said...

Hopefully for you 11:20 Biden will engage in enough money printing and deficit spending to prop up the market long enough so you can get your money out. Biden except perhaps for a short-term minor market bump is going to be a disaster for the economy. This is a good time to park money in the fixed 7%. I'm only in my 40's so I am going to stay mostly in the old Variable A (whatever it's called now) but am definitely going on TRS today to change my percentages to add to the fixed.

10:21...you're kidding right? Four states didn't give Biden the election, it was four cities? Do you have any idea how much "How was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?" that statement has in it? When did those cities become entities unto themselves? Or are they only part of the state when your preferred candidate wins? You have every right to only give a crap about your stock portfolio, but a statement like that is idiotic.

I dont buy James take on popular vote argument when 80% cali and nyc typically vote liberal. If it wasn't for shitty NYC new york is red.
I do agree Jill Biden would be more pro-teacher and way better than Devos, yet, that's only positive I can give for the Biden's.

James's brother is a cop I wonder who he voted for, seems you both could be polar opposites.

138,000 blue wave of votes with basically 0 for trump is laughable like seriously the odds of that are out of space. Fox was an embarrassment calling arizona and Virginia so early. Even CNN did not call arizona to their unreal credit.

James Eterno said...

I have read the Federalist Papers. Great for 1780's. Maybe worked for its time. For 2020: 1 person= 1 vote. New Zealand changed its system in 1996. Modernizing is needed here so people feel their voice matters.

Very dense, packed, minority communities gave biden the win in MI, WI and PA, which gave him the election. Is that not true? Trump won more counties in those states but those counties had much smaller numbers.

How did education do with obama and his sec?

Anonymous said...

James do you regret not going into the NYPD or FDNY? I ask because you have a brother that did, and I too have family that went that route. I chose teaching and now at 45 and 17 years in I have no doubt that had I picked either of the other two I certainly would have taken the promotion exams and been promoted many times over and or have been retired 3 years already. For those that do not know, to be promoted in NYPD or FDNY you take an exam and are placed on a list. Far different than having to spend thousands on another masters degree and hoping to find an admin job. When you look at this plus the fact that cops and firemen are not pushed around due to much stronger unions and are respected by the public ( firemen are) it makes me wonder sometimes. I enjoy teaching but I do look back and think what if?

Anonymous said...

Cops are respected by the public? Do you actually teach in nyc? Lol

James Eterno said...

As I stated in the post, Obama was terrible for public education. I expect we will do better under Biden, mostly because of his wife.

I would have made a mediocre cop at best. I do like the way the NYPD promotes based on civil service tests. I was hired off of one of the last social studies Board of Examiners lists. We actually took a fairly rigorous test (written and oral) and were hired based upon our test score.

When I hear from so many former students, very few regrets about my job (hard to call it a career) choice. I also met my wife at a chapter leader meeting so I am not at all unhappy that I chose teaching but I am very unhappy about the state of the profession.

The election results will probably be made official on December 9–assuming Trump doesn’t sue individual states —all the way up to the Supreme Court to overturn results. On the other hand, the coronavirus will still be around on December 9, 2020 and beyond —probably all the way to December 9, 2021– and continue to plague all indoor venues—especially NYC public schools—no matter who is officially elected President.

This was planned well by Pelosi and the dems for these key states. Trump wins Ohio and loses Michigan and Wisconsin? John James African American wins for senate in Michigan and then he loses a tight race day later, very nefarious and shameful.

What makes anyone think that Biden will appoint an Ed secretary better than Devos? Was Arne Duncan better for us? Was John King? I don’t like Devos but come on.... let’s not kid ourselves. Just because Jill Biden fancies herself a teacher doesn’t mean a thing. Don’t we all know plenty of teachers who pretended that every new thing that came out of Central worked wonders just to work their way out of the classroom? Admin sycophants who became coaches and instructional leaders. Technically Carranza is a teacher too. Let’s not play loose with the word teacher and think Biden admin will be good for teachers. Hope I’m wrong but history is on my side. We’ve been screwed by both dem and Republican appointees in education.

I agree. It’s called a compromise. Something the government doesn’t do to well these days. But it’s not their fault. They are simply a reflection of America which is and will be deeply divided until a smart politican comes along and unites the working and middle class along ECONOMIC lines, not racial ones. The democrats have to give up their race war for that though and the republicans have to give up the chamber of commerce. Neither is going to happen unfortunately.

By your logic James... If our Constitution is so great why aren’t other countries using it? Other countries do not have the freedom we have. Why are we looking to be like them?

James Eterno said...

Please come up with a better argument. I have been abroad. Just as much freedom in many countries as here and no electoral college. Our Constitution needs amending. The power structure here is not sustainable. When the two people who are running for the top job are Donald Trump and Joe Biden who offer basically nothing, I think it makes my point.

Anonymous said...

There is a reason why they use the electoral college. If we get rid of it then future presidential candidates may only cater to the larger cities and target their interests towards them. Smaller states like hawaii and alaska and others would not be included in many discussions. Most of the big cities are democratic. There hasnt been too many people who has won popular vote and lost election. It may not be radical James, but in my opinion this way would seem to work better for now. This election brought out record people.

Do you hear what you are saying? Why should the politicians cater to where the people actually live? They should. If you keep a senate, you have plenty of checks and balances and keep power for small states. Getting rid of the Electoral College is necessary so the population centers feel represented. A few thousand voters in a few states like Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia, and Michigan should not decide who is president when the difference in the country is millions of votes. This is ridiculous.
