MULGREW FILIBUSTERING UNACCEPTABLE

Michael Mulgrew is incapable of properly chairing a Delegate Assembly. He actually acknowledged at the December DA that last month he would have given himself an ineffective on the Danielson rubric for classroom management.

In November, he didn't know how to react when opposition members challenged him. His Unity caucus couldn't believe that they lost two votes and almost lost a third.

How did Mulgrew make sure he didn't have to deal with opposition speaking against his policies again at this month's DA? He filibustered.

His President's Report was a lecture that went on for close to an hour and a half of an hour 3/4 meeting. He talked down at the group instead of neutrally chairing the meeting. The DA even had a lengthy presentation from a someone from Mulgew's Unity Caucus on how privatized Medicare Advantage Plus  is so wonderful but isn't privatized Medicare which is exactly what it is. Even with this, Mulgrew was the speaker for around 80% of the meeting.

The other part of the DA included Leroy Barr's Staff Director's Report and the aforementioned Mulgrewcare presentation so Mulgrew and a few underlings took up 95% of the meeting. The remainder of the time was taken up by softball questions lobbed at Mulgrew and two uncontroversial motions were easily added to the agenda without any debate.

A Delegate transcribed the meeting and looked at the analytics. That is where we got that information that the vast majority of the time was Mulgrew just talking. Our minutes reflect that too. We had a deliberative body that did absolutely no debating.

Mulgrew may have moved up to developing for classroom management, but he gets an ineffective this month for member engagement. There was almost none.

The only way to change this is to work with the United for Change opposition and vote Mulgrew out in the spring. You will have to vote through the regular mail because Mulgrew won't allow electronic voting.  He wants a low vote turnout in my view. Unity voter suppresion, just like the Republican party, increases their chances of winning.

Note that this piece was updated based on updated analytics of who spoke for how long.

Not like Republicans.. They mail a ballot to your house. All you have to do is open it, check a box, and return it. How lazy are you? Shall we carry your ballot on a satin lined sedan chair? That is NOT voter suppression. You are grasping at straws.

President Mulgrew rated himself ineffective for allowing debate at the November DA. Then, he patted himself on the back for stifling debate at tonight's DA. Go figure!

1101. are options bad? how backward are you? Not allowing options, more possibility for voting, is literally suppression. Get with the times. Most people under 30 don't use the mail at all. No one said it is hard, just dated. Nor is it hard to offer an electronic ballot. Again, Mulgrew and Co does what they want. Consult members and you will see they feel much differently about this subject than you. Maybe we should have an electronic vote on electronic voting...

11:01-Teachers should be inclusive.

As for hogging all the time-no teacher, especially in middle school, would ever get away with that. I don't expect every starting teacher to remain a classroom teacher for their whole career, not everyone has that talent. But for goodness sakes- engaging your audience is teaching 101, be respectful, don't waste everyone's time by talking on and on.

I had a supervisor who would hide all day. Then at the end of the day he held meetings and wanted to talk and talk and joke around. At the end of the day-when we were all worn out. Lots of people transferred out and eventually he was "promoted out".

Another retired teacher/administrator was selling a book at a conference (it was a pretty good book-I had bought it earlier) and the big shots running the conference wanted him to drag out his presentation so they wouldn't have to let us go early. I get his dilemma. He gave a long, boring speech. And lost respect.

First they came for the Medicare, but I was not on Medicare so I did not speak out. Then they came for the social security, but I was not on social security so I did not speak out. Then they came for the pension and 401k…

I don’t understand how we are made to bend over backwards to teach virtually which is completely ridiculous (especially in early childhood) but we can’t vote online? I call BULLSH*T! Why is everyone except teachers granted any convenience?

Election prediction:
Unity 79%
UfC 20%

NY City schools are babysitting service centers for children of color.
The NY city businesses need their parents to go to work.
Taxpayers foot the bill for the babysitting service centers.

Lets see how quickly the schools go remote.

To compare Medicare Advantage to policies of Hitler is beyond disgusting. 90% of country would kill for such a great policy. And you're evoking Nazis. Even if it was a lousy policy, the comparison would be disgusting. But it's a great plan.

Off topic

Why is there no mention of increased testing in NYC schools? The mayor still preaches that schools are the safest places??!!

We need increased testing now!

Anonymous said...

There is no increased testing because the mayor wants to contain the truth. Schools are a huge cause of the spread.

11:01 pm is right. People opposed to Unity who coddle those too lazy or too stupid to find a mailbox are why for the first time ever I am considering voting for Unity. I don’t want never ending excuse making coddlers running my union…. even though I despise Unity. You lose people with talk of voter suppression bullshit.

731 said get off my lawn. time to get with the times. stop coddling those afraid of change and growth. and speaking of never ending excuse makers, have you heard Mulgrew speak? ever? always an excuse for why he goes against the will of members, and even goes against what the Assembly votes for, like with the NY Health Act. if you really hate all this bullshit, then vote for Change and we can put an end to Unity's suppression of democracy within our Union.
or you can continue to sound like a grandparent in a lawn chair screaming about the kids these days.

MA is a great plan if you have run of the mill medical problems that are covered by MA. If you have an unusual type of cancer or want to see a specialist who doesn't accept MA, you have to deal with the healthcare bureaucracy. Sure you could change back to regular Medicare. My husband is now 81 and over the past two years has faced multiple health crisis/ challenges. Believe me, when you are going through serious health problems, the last thing you want to do is deal with insurance companies and their rules and deadlines.

The real question is-why isn't the city going to pay for regular Medicare anymore? Why is the UFT bargaining away retirees healthcare and what benefit will union members get in exchange?

After a world-wide pandemic- why are they messing with healthcare?

For a smart person seems your comments here and views are laughable and quite dangerous. Saying the republicans wants voter suppression paints a false narrative
Yes they do not want some voter suppressant -like undocumented illegal citizens. This should be a no-brainer. Funny though how these same dems think its alright though that people have to show ID when getting on a plane of getting a vax shot.
There was no need to turn a very legitimate post about Mulgrews abuse of power into a partisan political jab that is as you like to say very off topic.

Union members will still have a premium free health plan available.
Very few other Americans have this.

9:55,

Voting is a constitutional right.

Showing ID to get on a plane happened before 9/11, but is more strictly enforced after.

No smoking on air planes so non-smokers are protected from secondhand smoke. Masks and covid cards to protect us all from an infectious disease.

11:46,

Sorry, very little is free. What do retirees give up while getting a "free" health plan? A union that represents teachers needs to educate and be transparent with members.

James Eterno said...

UFTers have a contractual right to premium free healthcare.

Anonymous said...

A contractual right lasts until the next contract.
The UFT,through the MLC for health insurance, will continue to see that all UFT members will get the best health insurance negotiable

Shelley said...

And so we should give it up? Or, so we should shut up and count our lucky stars even if doing so may end us in the same place with most Americans?

Come on people, if you don't think like a union you can't act like a union.

Mulgrew isn't going anywhere. And Adams and Banks are Bloomberg II. We need to start acting like we care about ourselves and are willing to fight to keep what we have and what we have a right to and stop concession bargaining in its tracks. No more give backs. We need a real wage increase, that is, we need more not less health care coverage and we need a raise above inflation.

Showing an ID is now voter suppression. LOL.

And these are teachers. LOL.

Comparing the uft to the GOP. LOL.

I wonder why this school system has deteriorated to such an extent.

Grade fraud equals bail reform.

That is the Dem run school system and the dem run justice system.

17 of the top 20 states for jobs recovered since the pandemic are led by Republican governors

Randi, who tweets all day about left wing nonsense, made no comment about this.

Anonymous said...

Right you are, that is why the new plan for Medicare age retirees is still premium free.

James Eterno said...

We are also supposed to have a choice of free plans and by law I do believe retirees are not supposed to have their healthcare diminished (only one premium free plan) unless active worker benefits are diminished too.

Anonymous said...

When can vote Rotten Randi out? I hate her more than Muldoo.

James Eterno said...

Can't oust Randi without first voting out Mulgrew since UFT controls largest bloc of AFT votes by far.

You are wrong.
What you say is a belief is not so.
You have been a good union man over the years, do not allow your wish for a leadership change to let you give wrong information to members on this very important issue.

4:12 hard to believe that there are people who do not understand that there was no voter fraud in the 2020 election .
Trump lost to Biden. The fact that many Republicans can't accept this is frightening. Are you unaware that the new voting laws enacted in conservative states based upon supposed fraud are bogus. Even the most conservative SCOTUS IN decades would not even listen or accept these ridiculous arguments.

412 never mentioned Trump.

Is showing an ID voter suppression?

9:33, How do you read this law? Please enlighten us if it doesn't apply to NYC.

HEALTH INSURANCE BENEFITS AND CONTRIBUTIONS OF RETIRED EMPLOYEES
OF SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND CERTAIN BOARDS (MADE PERMANENT 2010)
Chapter 729 of the Laws of 1994
§ 1. From on and after June 30, 1994, a school district, board of cooperative educational services, vocational education and extension board or a school district as enumerated in section 1 of chapter 566 of the laws of 1967,as amended, shall be prohibited from diminishing the health insurance benefits provided to retirees and their dependents or the contributions such board or district makes for such health insurance coverage below the level of such benefits or contributions made on behalf of such retirees and their dependents by such district or board unless a corresponding diminution of benefits or contributions is effected from the present level during this period by such district or board from the corresponding group of active employees for such retirees.

I really want to know how this doesn't apply to us.

3:29 - you don't have to mention he who shall not be named for anyone with a brain to know who you support. You sound like the same person who posted "Saying the republicans wants voter suppression paints a false narrative". If you're not familiar with the voter suppression laws that they're passing all over the red states maybe you should look it up so you don't sound so out of touch with the goings on of current events. Saying that it's simply to keep "undocumented illegals" from voting is what's ridiculous and laughable. You can't possibly be that naive.

"Following the 2020 United States presidential election and attempts by Donald Trump and Republican officials to overturn it, Republican lawmakers initiated a sweeping effort to make voting laws more restrictive.[2][3] According to the Brennan Center for Justice, as of October 4, 2021, more than 425 bills that would restrict voting access have been introduced in 49 states—with 33 of these bills enacted across 19 states so far.[4] The bills are largely centered around limiting mail-in voting, strengthening voter ID laws, shortening early voting, eliminating automatic and same-day voter registration, curbing the use of ballot drop boxes, and allowing for increased purging of voter rolls."

So yeah, a lot of it does have to do with the last election, so the poster was right-on for calling it out.

Anonymous said...

Have you bothered to read what the Brennan Center for Justice stands for? Left wing propaganda machine.
