Someone sent out the CDC guidelines for isolating in schools for staff and students. Follow them. 10 days of isolation for students and staff who have symptoms or test positive. This includes those who are fully vaccinated.
CDC has updated isolation and quarantine recommendations for the public. These recommendations do not apply to healthcare personnel and do not supersede state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules, and regulations. Read CDC’s media statement.
What is isolation?
Isolation is separating people who have COVID-19 or symptoms of COVID-19 from those who are not infected or showing symptoms in order to prevent transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.You isolate when you show symptoms of COVID-19 or are infected with the virus that causes COVID-19, even if you don’t have symptoms.Isolation is different from quarantine. Quarantine is used by someone who has been exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19 but has not tested positive for COVID-19 and does not have symptoms. Quarantine is important because even before a person has tested positive for COVID-19 or has symptoms, they could spread the virus that causes COVID-19 to other people without knowing. Quarantine is used to prevent transmission of the virus by ensuring that unvaccinated people who have been in close contact with someone with COVID-19 stay apart from others. If people have symptoms and/or have a positive viral test for COVID-19 while in quarantine, they should immediately begin the process for isolation.
Who needs to isolate?
People who are confirmed to have COVID-19 or are showing symptoms of COVID-19 need to isolate. This includes people who are not fully vaccinated and fully vaccinated people. More specifically,
- People who have a positive viral test for COVID-19, regardless of whether or not they have symptoms, need to isolate.
- People with symptoms of COVID-19, including people who are awaiting test results or are not tested, need to isolate. People with symptoms should isolate even if they do not know if they have been in contact with another person who has COVID-19.
How long should a student or staff member with COVID-19 isolate?
People can spread the virus that causes COVID-19 for a full 10 days from when they develop symptoms, even if they are feeling better. People who have tested positive, but do not have symptoms may spread the virus before they have symptoms or even spread the virus if they never have symptoms at all. For this reason, isolation should last at least 10 days. Day 0 is the day symptoms began or the day the person took a test that had a positive result. Day 1 is the day after symptoms began or, if a person does not have symptoms, the day after the person tested positive (use the date the test was collected).

Everyone knows we have been betrayed by our union. Stay safe out there.
Only recommendations! Nys and nyc went one step further and cut all essential workers to 5 days! Cdc recommended only people work booster shots. They are considering 2 shots not fully vaccinated. Nyc and nys disregarded that recommendation and made up their own for staffing shortages only!
I've been talking about this since the day the CDC released the new guidelines. There is NOTHING in the new regulations that mentionsv"Test to Stay". Once again, the UFT drops the ball so Adams can keep the city's babysitting service open.
#1). I thought the isolation was just lowered to 5 days by some government agency in NYS.
#2) If I test positive multiple times in a year (which seems to be possible due to variants) is that a new 10 days or deducted from isolation days I haven't used? or CAR days.
IMO: Until every student is tested every week, staff absences will continue to soar.
No KN95 mask distribution yet. D75 school in BX.
Queens HS here, Over 30 teachers out, not including other school staff. Most classes are empty even when combined with other classes due to teacher absences. Many confirmed cases among students and teachers that will not be counted because they were not done in school buildings. It must appear safe!!! If a person is experiencing symptoms and isolates are those days taken from our sick days or CAR? Many teachers admitted to "not feeling well," and lied on the Health Screening because of fear of retaliation. Please do not worry though. Please rest assured that our health and safety are our mayor's top priority. No one thinks we are safe!!!!!!! Some teachers in my school did the rapid test and tested + in school and left. We will not see anything happen until parents keep their kids home and demand Remote. All the students absent today will get 0's for all the work they miss while they are out.
Oh, so the uft won't protect me, I must use CDC guidelines. Thanks for clearing that up. Dues well spent.
Not enough 95 Masks for teachers and only 1 covid test per teacher. I thought it was supposed to be 2. 11:05am Same at my HS in Queens. I don't care about CAR days at this point. I will be safe and do what is best to ensure my health. I will Join the mass call out by being honest on the Health Survey.
Will we be paid for isolation days?
And UNITED FOR CHANGE - UFT is doing NOTHING different.
Here is the opportunity to be brave, have courage, be a UNION. And . . . nothing.
Stand up. Fight. Tell people to sick out.
Nope. Same as the old boss.
You get up to 10 days for isolation or symptoms. Calendar reset this week.
I've been sneezing and had a runny nose all day and I got the two rapid tests at my school, but why the hell should I bother testing myself. So I spread it around. Remember it's just a cold.
Same as the old boss? I must have missed the UFT's lawsuit on the reopening. Oh wait that was a United for Change/ Solidarity exec bd candidate who filed it. And then there is the school that successfully waged a sickout and went remote. Isn't that a MORE United for Change school?
Other chapters are doing it quietly so as not to put UFTers in harm's way.
Were you at yesterday's UFC meeting with around 250 UFTers?
No kn95 at my BX school. Staff told only 5 days of paid Covid time off... Staff even leaving early with Covid.
Not bothered by school at all. I have mild symptoms and mentioned them on the Health Screening. Was not given permission to enter. Simple solution. We were told not to lie plain and simple. Those of you who went in are morons. I even heard some schools were keeping teachers for PD's. Good luck, stay home and stay safe.
When is the case being heard?
Wanna know what the uft is tweeting about today? January 6. Check the twitter feed of Brian Gibbons. Nice work, uft. Glad the health and safety of dues payers is so important to you.
So,
After isolation, and no symptoms, how long can I still test positive? I can't seem to get that data anywhere. From what I understand, even people who have recovered from COVID fully, can still test positive for awhile after because of virus remnants in the body.
Unsafe teachers? Who cares, says the AFT President.
At 4:08 PM, Randi tweeted...
"This is really damning. Republicans who watch Fox are 16 points more likely to say Jan 6th was peaceful, instead of the deadly violent assault it was."
Teenage son just informed us the predictable. All but one of his teachers out sick today, that school staff doing best they can, that it made no sense to go in today to be exposed, and that his friend sitting bored in neighboring school auditorium called him to say what's up lol
A union is better than no union. Keep saying it.
"I'm going to tell you what's happening day to day: we're staying open...we're going to turn those question marks into an exclamation point- we're staying open." Adams and Mulgrew confirm that there are test kits in every school. They'll be used to test people exposed to + cases.
I agree with 1:05. UFC is missing the opportunity. First, the lawsuit is meaningless. It will have zero impact. And sickouts are just publicity stunts that affect parents more than changing the status quo. Many already think teachers want to just stay home. These 2 things just accentuate that point.
Real leadership would give us legitimate options and call for legitimate change. Face it, they are not closing the schools. So now what's the next move to make it safer?
Received my ihealth test kit containing 2 tests however one solution necessary for conducting the test is missing. Anyone else with this problem?
What tests?
I did the at home test when I came home. Followed the directions to the T and had no lines appear which means I did it wrong. I have one test left. My eyes are still tearing from doing the swab, so I'll wait until later.
Who at the DOE cares about CDC guidelines when they don't have to follow the science.
The DOE does not actually follow the science. They just say that they the follow the data/science.
All Adams keeps saying is transmission is low, but he is basing it only on tests done at school. I have 6 students who tested positive and a teacher in my school who tested positive this morning after giving herself the test. If schools are the safest place, why are so many students and teachers not coming in. Obviously he's not doing a good job if nobody believes him.
This means 300,000+ students are getting a version of remote learning that is not all that intentional, if they're getting instruction right now at all.

New: attendance was very low in NYC schools today, about 67 percent. Slightly higher than the last day before winter break.
@605 pm. No lines on the Abbott rapid test means "negative". A definitive line, lighter line and even a faint line etc means positive.

See the latest, The nations Capital Physician urges telework and medical grade masks as Omicron Surges!!
"At least 12 members of Congress have tested positive since Mid- December!"
Sounds like a real heightened concern for the health and safety of Congress members and their own
How about our law makers take into consideration the Covid positive stats in our schools, how do we conduct very important business with our children? Also, how do we keep children safe as well as ourselves and our own?
I guess the government is more important than the people going to work and school.
2:16 and 9:15am
KN 95 lack of masks is a problem. I don't know how or why the union is allowing us yet again to be placed into this unsafe situation. I am in southeast queens. 38 Percent positivity rate.
I spoke with a higher up in the morning who told me yes, I can request 5 masks-1 for each day of the week. By 2:20pm the story changed to Central UFT informed us that it’s one mask a week. These masks can be reused. Put it in a plastic bag each day.
I emailed back and asked what the make and model number of the masks are as I found nothing showing that a disposable KN95 mask should be used for 5 days. Most say 4-8 hours none say 5 days.
I am still waiting for an answer.
I see now the UFT email says these masks will be distributed to staff once a week. Our union industrial hygienist has advised us that the same KN95 mask may be reused for up to five days.
I can't see how saying that a disposable KN95 mask should be used for 5 days when we talk and sing(elementary) all day. I can understand if we sat along in an office but this just isn't the case. How is reusing a wet, dirty KN95 mask for 5 days straight possibly providing us the same level of safety as using a new mask daily? I have asked several doctors and people who are in the medical field and no one agrees this should be done for 5 days.
Working in an unventilated, freezing cold classrooms with a 38 percent positivity rate isn't enough? We can't even be provided with a clean KN95 mask daily and the UFT did not have this info until later in the day today when this should have been communicated before today.
The current leadership is an EPIC failure.
We must must must get new leadership now.
I am really proud of Lydia for filing the lawsuit to stand up for herself and other teachers. Mulgrew sounded stupid on the news today "We thought the schools should be remote now that cases are so high, but the mayor said no...so..." He is not our leader. He needs to go. It's not because the schools haven't gone remote. He needs to go because he is not one of us, and he is not for us. His time is up. That position needs term limits anyway.
Doesn't matter, you don't need to test out. After 10 days you can no longer spread the virus and if after 5 days you have no or mild symptoms, you can return
Mulgrew: "we told the mayor we shouldn't be open, but the mayor said no. So, I guess we're staying open. What else can we do?"
The uft is a joke.
Mulgrew is a stooge for the democratic party, for the mayor and for the governor.
He is unfit to represent teachers. He does not represent teachers.
Nerd,
When I had covid last October (a different variant), they said someone might test positive (with PCR test) for 90 days. I was told by the county health department to quarantine for 10 days. Is the health department involved anymore with contact tracing and daily phone calls?
I think that many politicians and people in general don't understand why teachers want remote learning. They may think that teachers just want to stay home. But teachers work with children. By training and personality, teachers care for their students and are extra cautious. After all, these are other peoples children. Those families trust us to care for their children. Teachers don't take those responsibilities lightly.
Also, it's not right, but if you can't get a good mask from work, invest in yourself and buy them.
Adams and United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew both said staffing was stable overall as school resumed Monday morning – and there were sufficient substitutes to fill any gaps.
What a crock of $hit. Dumb and dumber making up the narrative as they go along. Did they even visit any schools? Teachers out in droves today. We had 45 or more teachers out today.
Why hasn’t Mulgrew or anyone gone to the papers to expose the fake testing numbers that are happing in schools. This will show that the mayors assertion the schools are safe is based on bullshit numbers. Does the general population know a very small percent is students are tested in the schools?!
NYC is averaging 40k+ covid cases/day. Over 4,500 are hospitalized, and that # is now growing faster than at any point since Mar, 2020.
We need to act now to slow this wave, protect our hospitals, and support the sick.
It's also not about kids and teacher getting it. We could bring it home to people who are elderly or immuno compromised.

Parents Unite, I am no longer sending my sons to their school buildings. I received 23 emails today from their schools stating that they were exposed to Covid 19. Please do not put your children in danger by sending them to school. We did did at home tests this morning and not one of them worked. (I did them correctly. I have done thousands of the rapid results Covid Tests for the Hospital I work in).
Not sure what the Mayor means when he stated there are enough teachers as most of my sons teachers were out and their classes were combined with 2 or 3 other classes. Schools are not safe and our Mayor knows this. The mayor may not listen to teachers and their union, but he will be forced to listen if we do not send our students into Covid infested schools.
January 04, 2022 11:00:00 AM
Yes, that may be the only way the mayor will listen. I teach in a Queens HS and was emailed 28 exposure letters. 8 of those students contacted me stating they are positive and are being forced to quarantine. I used the tests provided by the school and neither of them worked at all. Glad to hear you are putting your children's health above the BS. We also had 37 teachers out 15 claim they are forced to stay home because of a + test result.
Adams says he and Mulgrew are lock-step.

The masks are not meant to be reused. Ask any experienced nurse what the policy was before anyone heard of COVID. The democrats got your vote. You should know they won’t come a courtin’ again until the midterms and gubernatorial. So go to work and do as you’re told. New boss same as the old.
