UNIFORM COALITION PATTERN BEATS UFT-DC 37 RAISES FOR THIS ROUND OF BARGAINING

UFT members have lost again it appears.

This is from Wednesday's Daily News:
Eight of the city’s uniformed unions have inked a three-year contract with the de Blasio administration that will guarantee their members a roughly 8% pay increase across the life of the deal, the Daily News has learned.

The uniformed unions are part of a coalition that began quietly negotiating with the city’s Office of Labor Relations several months ago. The coalition includes the Correction Officers Benevolent Association as well as two other Correction Department unions covering captains and wardens. Also part of the joint effort are the police unions covering captains and lieutenants as well as the Uniformed Fire Officers Association and two unions covering sanitation workers.

The terms largely follow the economic raises included in deals City Hall reached with civilian unions — 2.2%, 2.5% and 3% annually — but it also includes a 1% differential for the uniformed workers, said Correction Officers Benevolent Association President Elias Husamudeen, who serves as the coalition’s spokesman.

“This deal contains no zeros, and no givebacks,” the union leader said. “It’s roughly 8% in pay increases and once we negotiate for longevity, annuities and other things, it will probably be worth more.”

Please remember that the UFT deal is not for three years, it is for three years and seven months so there are seven months with no salary increase. UFT raises are not all annual; two are spread out to cover a period beyond a year. In addition, the uniform coalition is getting a 1% differential if the Daily News is right. This goes well beyond the UFT deal as raises come more frequently and there is an extra 1% thrown in for good measure.

I could never understand why when it comes to salary increases, someone who wears a uniform is considered a more valuable employee than a teacher or other non-uniform employee but that has been the rule since the days when Ed Koch was mayor. No disrespect to uniform employees, they are hard working people. We thank them for their service.

UFT Contractual Increases:
 2% on February 14, 2019,
  0% on February 14, 2020
  2.5% on May 14, 2020,
   3% on May 14 2021,
    0% on May 14, 2022.

UFT Contract does not end until September of 2022.

Have a wonderful Holiday! Enjoy the extra day off on Monday for sure.

Bargaining? Where is the uft?

We routinely graduate kids at my high school who cannot read or write more than a few words at a time. As for "higher level" vocabulary, you have got to be kidding me. Our top students are at about a 6th grade level, and they are less than 5% of the school.

Do we want to do this? Of course not, but any teacher who does not 'pass them through' gets the proverbial target and gets harassed out of the school.

We want to teach properly and bring the kids up, but admin does everything in their power to prevent this. How?

1. Eliminating all direct instruction. We can only 'model activities' now and then the kids work in groups with an 'activity guide' and 'teach each other' through 'high level discussion.' I am NOT making this up.

2. We cannot give any work that involves memorization, skills practice, repetition or using a textbook. These are ;old ways; of teaching. "21st Century" skills involved constant use of computers and more 'discussion.' In our PD they showed us a video of bored kids in a classroom being liberated by computers and endless chatting, so it must be true.

3. Kids are allowed to have cellphones on their persons in my school. Oh, and they unblocked Youtube so the kids are strung out on music and texting all the time.

4. The admins tell us we must give the kids high level texts to read, but when they come in to observe, if they see the kids reading, they are not discussing! Ineffective!

5. There are no consequences for any bad behavior at all now. Standards of good behavior are racist, anyway. Back to cultural competency training with you!

6. No homework policy. You cannot fail them for attendance. Parents not involved. We have no after school programs beyond regents prep and similar boring things. No sports program (it's a small school). Bell-to-bell instruction with only 1.5 minutes passing time, so everyone is late every period.

I could go on, but you get the picture.

SESIS Scan should be called SESIS Scam.
Watch all of your cases go out of compliance waiting for attendance sheets to “float” in.

The UFT should get ahead of what’s coming, and it will come. They’re facilitating an incredible weakening of society in NYC, via DeBlasio’s illiterate and violent student body and grads. The UFT is doing nothing about complaints from it’s rank and file concerning grade fraud and dangerous schools; and is instead joining DeBlasio in saying the schools are more successful and safer than they have ever been. Complicity will have its very nasty reward even on an individual level - fight it and keep an anecdotal record of doing so.
