CARRANZA RESIGNS

 From Chalkbeat:

New York City Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza is leaving his post on March 15, a sudden departure in the middle of a public health crisis that has meant a tumultuous, draining year for the city’s roughly 960,000 students and their families.

Meisha Ross Porter, the executive superintendent of the Bronx, will replace Carranza and become the first Black woman to lead the nation’s largest school system, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Friday.

Porter will take over a fraying school system, with many students having lost out on critical instructional time and facing mounting mental health needs. On top of that, many schools have seen significant enrollment drops, with the overall student population dropping 4% from the previous year, and as a result, many principals might start next year in serious debt.

Families on both sides of the reopening debate — those who wished this year was fully remote and those who want their children back in classrooms five days a week — are frustrated with Carranza and de Blasio, and have blasted them for not having a clearer plan for September.

Porter, a New York City public school graduate, started out as a youth organizer in the Bronx’s Highbridge neighborhood and has worked for the education department for 20 years, serving as a teacher, principal, and superintendent in the Bronx. In 2018, Carranza appointed her to fill the new role of executive superintendent in the Bronx, overseeing the borough’s 361 schools.

“I am ready to hit the ground running and lead New York City schools to a full recovery,” Porter said in a statement.”

UFT reaction::

UFT President Michael Mulgrew on the Resignation of Chancellor Richard Carranza

“Richard Carranza was a real partner in our efforts to open school safely. Too often he had to fight behind the scenes to keep the needs of students, staff and their families ahead of politics. We wish him well. He will be missed.”

“We have successfully partnered with Meisha Ross Porter on projects in the past, including the Bronx Plan and expanding community schools. We look forward to working with her in the future.”

What really happened...

Deblasio to Carranza: We are opening high schools

Carranza: It's really not a good idea, a logistical nightmare with programming and switching classes in the building, and only 10 percent opted to go in the building.

Deblasio: Too bad, open them up.

Carranza: Im out, peace!

So we will get a new chancellor in January with the new mayor. 3 chancellors in less than a year.

She’s a caretaker chancellor and will be back in her old position next year. Nothing will change.

This is insanity. How is she next in line to be chancellor. She is a racist. I guess because it’s ok to be a racist with Jews and other minorities.

Porter, throwing herself an even mor grandiose event than when she was made Executive Superintendent!

Hope you still have the diamond encrusted tiara at the ready!

But hey, when you oversee the poorest Congressional district in the United States, why not wake a ride in a glass elevator at Villa Barone and have some nice hot lasagna and champagne?!

There was no need to name a replacement. DeBlasio has been running the schools anyway—and he will be gone in January. The next Mayor can then pick a new Chancellor.

If you could guess what the nyc chancellor would look like in 2021, Porter fits perfectly.

Carranza is leaving back to his homestead on a Greyhound bus to Texarkana, Texas.

No doubt about, he did not like the obvious racism of bringing the in-school education back into the building so early. So much for standards, accountability and anti-racist rhetoric.

#1, #4 and #5

In unity, Mr. Carranza is now just a one way ticket midnight bus ticket to Texarkana, Texas.

1) Unity is a one way street.
2) Teacher harassment using weaponized observations is a symptom of a repressive organization.
3) Systemic teacher inadequacy is the "common core" of a delusional conspiracy theory.
4) New racists pose as anti-racists.
5) Double standards are justified for the greater good of promoting corporate privatization.

Is Porter going to have a big maskless party in Times Square to celebrate her promotion? Will she be in a horse drawn carriage and be led up a red carpet with her crown and scepter? I can picture what she'll do: This is the rubric for rating white teachers, this is the rubric for rating everyone else. This is the salary for white teachers, this is the salary for everyone else. White teachers get letters in their files for these infractions like farting too loud. Everyone else gets a letter in their file for these infractions.

Alright
Yep-a, Etty in a room a cry
My mama say she must wipe her eye
Papa say, "She no fi foolish

It is no wonder
It's a perfect ponder
While they were dancing
In that bar room last night
Johnson in the room a-fret
Uncle say he must hold up him head
Aunty say, "She no fi foolish
Like there's no time for his wedding day!"
It is no wonder
It's a perfect ponder
While they were dancing
In that bar room last night
One pound 10 for the wedding cake
And plenty bottle of cola wine
All the people them dress up in a white
Fi go eat out Johnson wedding cake
It is no wonder
It's a perfect ponder
While they were dancing
In that bar room last night
Yep-a, Etty in a room a cry
Mama say she must wipe her eye
Papa say, "She no fi foolish

Surprised that DeBlasio simply didn’t name his wife as “Acting Chancellor”.

Anonymous said...

We can assume that the Mayor had a major influence on the Chancellor's policies and Carranza was simply hired to further Di Blasio's agenda still Carranza should be judged for what happened while he was Chancellor. When you look back it is hard to not see that the Carranza years were a complete and utter failure.

First, working on bias in our education system is a noble cause. I say that as a while male recognizing the advantages I may have had that I am not seeing my poor students getting. The violence in their neighborhoods, the cycle of poverty, and lack of parental help are big strikes against them. However, his approach of white shaming was not the right approach. There are many white teachers, on both sides of the political aisle, that want to see equal rights and justice for all. Many of us in the white community were appalled by George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, etc. but we have been made to feel like we are part of that problem. There was an opportunity to make a difference by bringing everyone to the table instead of pushing people away which he did. For the record, I did like the implicit bias training I did remotely over the summer. I found it informative and made me think more about my approach.

Second, the coronavirus was a nightmare for so many. He cried about those he knew who died. Sadly, there is some blame on him for that. He was in a position to influence decisions regarding the closing of schools and failed to do so. I will give a pass on the end of the 19-20 school year because many school districts failed with the unchartered remote learning waters we were all in but with an entire summer to prepare, this year has been a disaster and damaging to the education of a majority of students. I have watched what my children do in Long Island. I know it's apples and oranges but both my kids were remote and their work was rigorous, engaging and cameras on was mandatory. There was a way. It just takes some guts to tell parents they needed to do more as parents.

Third, the elimination of the talented and gifted programs and placement tests was a terrible decision. It's never mentioned that students from poor Asian communities score very well. These tests were needed to help them and fair. Not being able to recognize that fiscal equity is not congruent with school success has been an ignored truth in education for decades. Hard work, parental involvement and a student's willingness to learn will always be more valuable and determine a student's success than throwing money and technology and at an unwilling to learn student.

I never wish bad on anyone. Whether I agreed with him or not I do not wish anything bad on anyone. But it's never what you have it's what you leave behind. That will be his legacy. His legacy is one of failure and leaving in March comes off as abandoning the sinking ship.

6:38, They already have. The teacher FB page is trumpeting this "Strong, black woman" in this amazing, highly paid job. When others mention her previous issues, racial and otherwise, they get called racist by other teachers. No wonder we get destroyed every contract, get abused, laughed at, and have awful leadership...we are the dumbest. But I'm white, so what do i know? Perhaps the mayor will call racism on the posting below, but i doubt it.

"Both women say they were terminated as the culmination of a months-long campaign of gender, race, and age discrimination marked by a pattern of actions that included being “admonished” for refusing to participate in the cross-arm salute featured in the 2018 film “Black Panther.” At official gatherings of high-level Department of Education employees, then-Bronx superintendent Meisha Ross Porter asked the group to make the salute regularly.

Espinal filed a Manhattan Supreme Court suit against the city’s Department of Education’s top officials, alleging she was “admonished” and told it was “inappropriate for her not to participate” in the salute by Porter, court filings show.

In the $30 million legal claim filed by Espinal on Feb. 3, the educator claims she was told she “wasn’t black enough,” and that she should “just learn to be quiet and look pretty.”

And you know what a new chancellor means? Absolutely nothing. Seen them since 97. Nothing is going to happen that completely disrupts the way the system is. Just the way of the world. Good teachers are going to continue to do God's work, lazy teachers are going to continue to work the system depending on their specific school and admin, hard-working kids are going to excel, lazy kids are going to screw the greatest opportunity this free world has ever seen in favor of a cell phone and social media. Prove me wrong? Thank you. Sometimes it's really simple.

She needs to clean up the bureaucratic bloat in the doe and get rid of those fraudulent principals like the one at Maspeth. Make some real change.

She won't. But she will talk about white supremacy a lot. Why hold students accountable when you could just blame others?

Anonymous said...

I read she only has 20 years in the DOE! That should be the minimum to become a principal! Too many DOE suits in way over their head. She is part of the bureaucratic bloat and the fraudulence of the DOE. I do not think there is anyone who believes that she rose of up the ranks of the DOE because of her fine work and talent!

NY Post says she is the first 'Chancellor of color". Hmmm, I guess they forgot about Rudy Crew. (The last decent chancellor we had)

She was a principal of an "F" rated school and threw herself a $45,000 fiesta attended by UFT/CSA members who
were afraid to decline the invitation.
As for Carranza, the only thing he did, was make $1millon in the 3 years he was here.
Incredible!
BTW.....
Porter will be in her position for approximately 10 months. But I bet she has a "life line" nestled in her agreement to allow her to return to suck more money out of the DOE for diamond encrusted tiara rides in glass elevators.
She was in my building and didn't want to lower herself to speak to teachers. Guess it was beneath her.

It doesn’t matter who the chancellor is. The chancellor is the mayor. All chancellors hired while there is mayoral control of the schools are merely puppets. I don’t even know why deBlasio bothers to hire someone new. Save the money. Not to mention the three tiers of bureaucrats Carranza hired - get rid of them or have them do something useful. The amount of money that the DOE is wasting is absolutely incredible and made so even worse by current economic conditions that are only beginning to be understood and seen. That said I wish any person who takes the position as much luck as possible because not only is it a thankless position it is also a totally impotent one, in that the person will have no say, whatsoever on anything other than things that really don’t matter. And I like Rudy Crew by the way, I believe he just resigned his position at some college. Good luck to him also, I always thought he was a decent guy.

James Eterno said...

Crew was appointed by Board of Education. It was pre-mayoral control. Bd of Ed had two mayoral appointees and 1 each appointed by the 5 Borough Presidents. SI Republican, other 4 Democratic so Dem majority.

No worries. She’ll be as easy to fool and play as the rest of the woke DOE fools. I’ve been playing them for years. They’re not too bright. Oh yeah white people privileged, equity for poor kids... as I cash in while teaching poor kids nothing to actually help them learn to read and write. I follow their chosen curriculum to a T and feel no guilt. It’s what the woke chose for me to follow and I gladly take the money. They must know better after all. They’re really woke. I’m just faking it. Maybe I’ll suggest a per session gig. Get a fancy woke title for it and cash in some more. Stop being angry white folks, learn to play these racists at the DOE. Not all black and brown people are racist just those in power at the DOE and most elected democrats. I’ll soon be retired with a million in my TDA, market investments and a mortgage paid off. I got it all from working in NYC schools. I figured out in college that most professors just wanted me to hang on their every word and repeat their ideas when answering them. I applied that to principals, APs and superintendents at the DOE and voila. Got to fool a new crop of suckers and get paid for it. Conning racists really isn’t that hard when you know what they want to hear. Isn’t that how that black cop convinced a klansman he was on his side during phone conversations? Dumbass racist klansmen or dumbass racist school administrator .... all cut from the same dumbass racist cloth.

Grievance process resumes for salary and leaves
The union’s grievance process, which was suspended last spring in place of an expanded operational issues process, is resuming for certain types of grievances. The grievance process reopened on Feb. 8 for paraprofessionals, school nurses and therapists who are terminated for cause — not due to certification. This week, the UFT and the DOE reopened the process for grievances concerning salary and leaves. For those types of cases, chapter leaders should now follow the standard procedures and direct members wishing to file salary grievances through their borough office. Please inform your members that these procedures are now open.

The legacy of De Blasio and Carranza is their unfathomable "bi-racism."

De Blasio's vanity aligned with his subservience to small business and corporations was
his made it inevitable that he kept the schools open last March as the pandemic spread throughout NY City. More than 100 Department of Education employees died. Tens of thousands of NY city residents died. Folks in poor Black and Latino communities were hard hit by the De Blasio's failure to lead. This tragedy was at avoidable and it was a consequence of De Blasio's consequential racism toward poor Blacks and Latinos.

The other racism is the anti-white racism. This populist "anti-white racism" is evident in the political and cultural environment of De Blasio's reign of incompetence.

It is manifest in the firing of folks for refusing to participate in the Wakanda salute.
The anti-white is manifest in the race riots that raged last summer. As super-spreader events these riots were accepted and encouraged. The Populism of "anti-white racism" is a central ideology for both De Blasio and the liberal supremacists of the Democratic party.
