ELECTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES: CUOMO LAUNCHES OFFENSIVE AGAINST TEACHERS

The other day I stated that we lost badly in Tuesday's election and now our governor is looking to finish us off as this article shows.

Here is a quote from the newly reelected Andrew Cuomo:

“I want to focus on the performance,” Cuomo said today. “Does that upset the teachers union? Yes, it does. By the way, the first time I ran they didn’t endorse me, they didn’t endorse me.”

Can you see a push to lift the charter school cap or do away with it and also to make the teacher evaluation system even crazier than it already is?

Aren't you glad we have Michael Mulgrew (UFT), Karen Magee (NYSUT) and Randi Weingarten (AFT) defending our interests? Watch them appeal for a united front.

Whoops, sorry for the inadequate proofreading. That should read, "implement."

What's the delineation between Dems. and Reps.? At least you know where the Republicans stand. Until Democrats try to have it both ways, they will continue to be battered (like what occurred Tuesday) and I will vote for the candidate who suits my family and my needs.

Both candidates would have posed a challenge/fight for teachers. Remember, they both support charters. And while Astorino talked a good game in saying he would repeal Common Core, I dont believe he proposed a viable option. You can complain, but you

Sorry: You can complain, but you better have a solution.

In every UFT gathering I have attended in the last few years the mention of Andrew Cuomo's name draws hisses. This is not just a partisan reaction. That said, who should we have endorsed? What difference would it have made? The only bright side in the post election discourse is that, while voters selected politicians along party lines, when it came to issues they voted their self interest, which tended to favor progressive positions regardless of the voters' party affiliation. We have a lot of work to do. Let's do it united.

Zephyr Teachout should have been supported as ICE did. We could have led union influence so Cuomo would not get Working Families Party endorsement. Teachout got around 34% with no money or name recognition. Imagine if NYSUT was behind her. Also, remember the ICE Resolution in January to oppose Cuomo that Unity defeated at DA. This should have been a year long campaign.

The UFT has endorsed folks before and lost. Just because the Delegate Assembly says "Yes" to a candidate does not mean that the members will vote that way. I remember Obama vs. Clinton. Do you remember who our first choice was? What about Thompson and the new Mayor. It all can come down to the "Bradley Effect." That said, trust no ambitious political figure, but trust in mobilizing communities who will have a VOICE. Thank you, Dr. John Marvul.
