Now it is time for all of us to come forward to join the effort to repeal the evaluation law and tell the world we have had ENOUGH!
Here is an account of this morning's action at PS 8 written by our partner in crime to kill the evaluation system Roseanne McCosh.
The teacher elected to be CL next year is holding the END Danielson sign. (Roseanne is holding the ENOUGH sign) |
This morning approximately 50 UFT members stood in front of our school building for 10 minutes as an exercise in solidarity. We decided at our last union meeting to start with a gathering in front just to show unity as union members. We didn't want to scare anyone away by getting too militant too quickly.
A couple of signs were made by one teacher and when everyone saw them they quickly got on board with “End Danielson” and teachers have had “Enough.” Once we realized everyone liked the ideas behind the signs we got everyone to chant, "End Danielson Now" "Teachers have had enough" "Paras have had enough" "What have we had? ENOUGH!" etc…
My CL made a point that even though I wasn’t rated under Danielson I was leading the chant. I then called out the names of the other staff members who, like me, are not rated under Danielson but still chanted. Teachers applauded these staff members and thanked them for showing solidarity.
We ended by entering the building together in a moment of silence to mourn our profession. Mourning our profession is why we wore black. We are going to try to do this again next week.

Sorry the pictures didn't come out in the original posting. I think it is fixed now. Please contact me if it isn't.
I love this school!
Not everyone in my school has my big mouth or my backbone but when you reach out to people and talk to them like human beings and truly hear their fears and assure them we can unite and stick together, it actually starts to happen. Our CL-elect and our delegate-elect have made it a priority to unite our staff. NYC teachers hate Danielson. NYC teachers have had enough. Plain and simple. My school was just vocal about it but others hate it too. Our UFT leadership should ask us what we think and truly hear what we have to say. Roseanne McCosh
Absolutely agree, Roseanne. Every NYC Teacher I know hates the current Danielson observations. It needs to go! Thank you and your staff for standing up. UFT leadership needs to listen to members and fix this mess. It will be much more effective than focusing on apps, gimmicks, and door-knocking to try to persuade us to stand with our union post-Janus.

Yeah,a lot of good it does. UFT likes to say, "look at the teacher strength of those who gon on strike." Why not here? It will hurt Mulgrew's standing with his buddies?
The NYS Education Department would have to get involved if the Danielson procedures were to be modified or eliminated:

We want to get rid of the evaluation law.Sign the petition at the right of this page.
Chancellor and Mulgrew could agree to two observations per year without changing the law at all.
James is 100% right. We could get 2 observations as soon as September IF and I mean IF, Mulgrew simply asks the new Chancellor. He seems like a decent guy.
Courage under fire. I have a lot of RESPECT for you and your colleagues. Amazing show of balls. Thank you for doing what many are afraid to do. I hope this is the start of a movement. Kudos man ku-dos!!!!
